Participatory exploration is the active involvement of individuals as contributors and collaborators throughout NASA's research, science and discovery activities. Summary: NASA invited people from around the world to choose a destination in the mission traverse plan for the 2010 Desert Research and Technologies Studies (Desert RATS) analog field test. Description: Two GigaPan panoramic images of the Arizona desert test site were published for the public to view online and vote on a location for the crew to conduct technology development research. The Desert RATS crews will navigate to the winning location in the Space Exploration Vehicles during the Aug. 31 - Sept. 16 field tests. Time Frame: The voting period was open July 26 - Aug. 8, 2010. Significance: This activity allowed the public to contribute to genuine NASA mission planning. During the voting period, more than 2,500 votes were cast by visitors from 88 countries.
