Variable selection is recognized as one of the most critical steps in statistical modeling. The problems encountered in engineering and social sciences are commonly characterized by over-abundance of explanatory variables, non-linearities and unknown interdependencies between the regressors. An added difficulty is that the analysts may have little or no prior knowledge on the relative importance of the variables. To provide a robust method for model selection, this paper introduces a technique...

In a seminal paper of 2005, Nualart and Peccati discovered a surprising central limit theorem (called the "Fourth Moment Theorem" in the sequel) for sequences of multiple stochastic integrals of a fixed order: in this context, convergence in distribution to the standard normal law is equivalent to convergence of just the fourth moment. Shortly afterwards, Peccati and Tudor gave a multidimensional version of this characterization. Since the publication of these two beautiful papers,...

The textbook was developed over several years and has been used in regular and honors-level classroom settings and in distance learning classes. This textbook is intended for introductory statistics courses being taken by students at two and fouryear colleges who are majoring in fields other than math or engineering. Intermediate algebra is the only prerequisite. The book focuses on applications of statistical knowledge rather than the theory behind it.

A new format for storing sparse matrices is proposed for efficient sparse matrix-vector (SpMV) product calculation on modern throughput-oriented computer architectures. This format extends the standard compressed row storage (CRS) format and is easily convertible to and from it without any memory overhead. Computational performance of an SpMV kernel for the new format is determined for over 140 sparse matrices on two Fermi-class graphics processing units (GPUs) and the efficiency of the kernel,...

Prologue General relativity is a beautiful scheme for describing the gravitational eld and the equations it obeys. Nowadays this theory is often used as a prototype for other, more intricate constructions to describe forces between elementary particles or other branches of fundamental physics. This is why in an introduction to general relativity it is of importance to separate as clearly as possible the various ingredients that together give shape to this paradigm. After explaining the...

A considerable amount of information regarding the processes that occurred during the accretion of the early planetesimals is still present among the small bodies of our solar system. A review of our current knowledge of the density of small bodies is presented here. Intrinsic physical properties of small bodies are sought by searching for relationships between the dynamical and taxonomic classes, size, and density. Mass and volume estimates for 287 small bodies are collected from the...

Quantum correlation is a key to our understanding of quantum physics. In particular, it is essential for the powerful applications to quantum information and quantum computation. There exist quantum correlations beyond entanglement, such as quantum discord (QD) and measurement-induced nonlocality (MiN) [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{106}, 120401(2011)]. In [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{77}, 022113(2008)], a subclass of PPT states so-called strong positive partial transposition (SPPT) states was introduced...

These notes are for a short course in set theory at the undergraduate level at Stellenbosch University. No pretense at orignality is claimed. Though amplied by material from a number of additional sources, the debt to the rst few chapters of the book Set Theory, by Thomas Jech, Springer 2003, should be easily discernible.

Many evolution problems in physics are described by partial differential equations on an infinite domain; therefore, one is interested in the solutions to such problems for a given initial dataset. A prominent example is the binary black hole problem within Einstein's theory of gravitation, in which one computes the gravitational radiation emitted from the inspiral of the two black holes, merger and ringdown. Powerful mathematical tools can be used to establish qualitative statements about the...

Observational studies of magnetic fields are vital as magnetic fields play a crucial role in various astrophysical processes, including star formation, accretion of matter, transport processes (e.g., transport of heat), and cosmic rays. We identified a process "ground state alignment" as a new way to determine the magnetic field direction in diffuse medium. The alignment is due to anisotropic radiation impinging on the atom/ion, while the magnetic field induces precession and realign...

The log canonical threshold for all smooth complex del Pezzo surfaces was computed by Cheltsov. His proof used connectivity of the non-klt locus and adjunction-type results, relying on vanishing theorems not known to be true in characteristic p. We compute the log canonical threshold of nonsingular del Pezzos over an algebraically closed field. We give an algebraic proof of this adjunction-type for surfaces and avoid the connectivity result by classifying curves of small degree. As an...

A simple and effective approach to thermodynamics is suggested, which solves the major difficulties in the traditional presentation of the subject. The internal energy is introduced from the behavior of deformable bodies, whereas the importance of keeping in mind the microscopic picture is emphasized. A straightforward model is used to show that the internal energy depends on the volume and entropy, from where the relationship between mechanics and thermodynamics is immediate, mechanics...

We evaluate the phase diagram of quantum gravity within a fully diffeomorphism-invariant renormalisation group approach. The construction is based on the geometrical or Vilkovisky-DeWitt effective action. We also resolve the difference between the fluctuation metric and the background metric. This allows for fully background-independent flows in gravity. The results provide further evidence for the ultraviolet fixed point scenario in quantum gravity with quantitative changes for the fixed point...

Robustness of the Luttinger theorem for fermionic liquids is examined in holography. The statement of the Luttinger theorem, the equality between the fermion charge density and the volume enclosed by the Fermi surface, can be mapped to a Gauss's law in the gravity dual, a la Sachdev. We show that various deformations in the gravity dual, such as inclusion of magnetic fields, a parity-violating theta-term, dilatonic deformations, and higher-derivative corrections, do not violate the holographic...

Strong second-harmonic generation has recently been experimentally observed from metamaterials consisting of periodic arrays of metal split ring resonators with an effective negative magnetic permeability [Science, 313, 502 (2006)]. To explore the underlying physical mechanism, a classical model derived from microscopic theory is employed here. The quasi-free electrons inside the metal are approximated as a classical Coulomb-interacting electron gas, and their motion under the excitation of an...

We study magneto--optical properties of monolayer graphene by means of quantum field theory methods in the framework of the Dirac model. We reveal a good agreement between the Dirac model and a recent experiment on giant Faraday rotation in cyclotron resonance. We also predict other regimes when the effects are well pronounced. The general dependence of the Faraday rotation and absorption on various parameters of samples is revealed both for suspended and epitaxial graphene.

We consider a theory of gravity with a hidden extra-dimension and metric-dependent torsion. A set of physically motivated constraints are imposed on the geometry so that the torsion stays confined to the extra-dimension and the extra-dimension stays hidden at the level of four dimensional geodesic motion. At the kinematic level, the theory maps on to General Relativity, but the dynamical field equations that follow from the action principle deviate markedly from the standard Einstein equations....

We explore various aspects of the correspondence between dimer models and integrable systems recently introduced by Goncharov and Kenyon. Dimer models give rise to relativistic integrable systems that match those arising from 5d N=1 gauge theories studied by Nekrasov. We apply the correspondence to dimer models associated to the Y^{p,0} geometries, showing that they give rise to the relativistic generalization of the periodic Toda chain originally studied by Ruijsenaars. In this paper, we define a \emph{toric stack} as a quotient of a toric variety by a subgroup of its torus (we also define a generically stacky version). Geometric rigidity states that a gradient field which is $L^p$-close to the set of proper rotations is necessarily $L^p$-close to a fixed rotation, and is one key estimate in nonlinear elasticity. In several applications, as for example in the theory of plasticity, energy densities with mixed growth appear. We show here that geometric rigidity holds also in $L^p+L^q$ and in $L^{p,q}$ interpolation spaces. As a first step we prove the corresponding linear inequality, which generalizes Korn's...

The real multiplication conjecture of Yu. I. Manin says that abelian extensions of the real quadratic number fields come from the so-called pseudo-lattices with real multiplication; the conjecture is based on an observation that for the imaginary quadratic fields such extensions are obtained from the lattices with complex multiplication. In this paper we prove Manin's conjecture using theory of the Hecke eigenforms (of weight two) and associated measured foliations on the modular surfaces.

These models also have problems explaining the longitude distribution and the radial emissivity gradient of the $\gamma$-ray galactic interstellar emission. We argue here that accounting for a well physically motivated correlation between the CR escape time and the spatially dependent magnetic turbulence power can...

Despite the large number of discoveries made recently by Fermi, the origins of the so called unidentified gamma-ray sources remain unknown. The large number of these sources suggests that among them there could be a population that significantly contributes to the isotropic gamma-ray background and is therefore crucial to understand their nature. The first step toward a complete comprehension of the unidentified gamma-ray source population is to identify those that can be associated with...

We discuss the collider phenomenology of Universal Extra Dimension models with gravity mediated decays. We concentrate on diphoton associated with large missing transverse energy signature. At the collider, level-1 Kaluza-Klein (KK) particles are produced in pairs due to the conservation of KK-parity. Subsequently, KK-particles decay via cascades involving lighter KK-particles until reaching the lightest KK-particle (LKP). Finally, gravity induced decay of the LKP into photons gives rise to the...

Studies on `strange' particle production have always occupied a very important space in the domain of Particle Physics. This was and is so, just because of some conjectures about specially abundant or excess production of `strange' particles, at certain stages and under certain conditions arising out of what goes by the name of `Standard' model in Particle Physics. With the help of Hagedornian power laws we have attempted to understand and interpret here the nature of the $p_T$-spectra for the...

We study the relationship between derived categories of factorizations on gauged Landau-Ginzburg models related by variations of the linearization in Geometric Invariant Theory. Under assumptions on the variation, we show the derived categories are comparable by semi-orthogonal decompositions and describe the complementary components. We also verify a question posed by Kawamata: we show that $D$-equivalence and $K$-equivalence coincide for such variations. The results are applied to obtain a...

We provide a framework for studying randomly coloured point sets in a locally compact, second-countable space on which a metrisable unimodular group acts continuously and properly. We first construct and describe an appropriate dynamical system for uniformly discrete uncoloured point sets. For point sets of finite local complexity, we characterise ergodicity geometrically in terms of pattern frequencies. The general framework allows to incorporate a random colouring of the point sets. We derive...

Consider a proper cocompact CAT(0) space X. We give a complete algebraic characterisation of amenable groups of isometries of X. For amenable discrete subgroups, an even narrower description is derived, implying Q-linearity in the torsion-free case. We establish Levi decompositions for stabilisers of points at infinity of X, generalising the case of linear algebraic groups to Is(X). A geometric counterpart of this sheds light on the refined bordification of X (\`a la Karpelevich) and leads to a...

In this paper, we analyze several recent schemes for watermarking network flows that are based on splitting the flow into timing intervals. We show that this approach creates time-dependent correlations that enable an attack that combines multiple watermarked flows. Such an attack can easily be mounted in nearly all applications of network flow watermarking, both in anonymous communication and stepping stone detection. The attack can be used to detect the presence of a watermark, recover the...

Marker-based motion capture (MoCap) systems can be composed by several dozens of cameras with the purpose of reconstructing the trajectories of hundreds of targets. With a large amount of cameras it becomes interesting to determine the optimal reconstruction strategy. For such aim it is of fundamental importance to understand the information provided by different camera measurements and how they are combined, i.e. how the reconstruction error changes by considering different cameras. In most star formation history (SFH) measurements, the reported uncertainties are those due to effects whose sizes can be readily measured: Poisson noise, adopted distance and extinction, and binning choices in the solution itself. However, the largest source of error, systematics in the adopted isochrones, is usually ignored and very rarely explicitly incorporated into the uncertainties. I propose a process by which estimates of the uncertainties due to evolutionary models can be incorporated...

The Rabi model that describes the fundamental interaction between a two-level system with a quantized harmonic oscillator is one of the simplest and most ubiquitous models in modern physics. However, this model has not been solved exactly because it is hard to find a second conserved quantity besides the energy. Here we present a unitary transformation to map this unsolvable Rabi model into a solvable Jaynes-Cummings-like model by choosing a proper variation parameter. As a result, the...

Elastic scattering observables (differential cross section and analyzing power) are calculated for the reaction $^6$He(p,p)$^6$He at projectile energies starting at 71 MeV/nucleon. The optical potential needed to describe the reaction is derived describing $^6$He in terms of a $^4$He-core and two neutrons. The Watson first order multiple scattering ansatz is extended to accommodate the internal dynamics of a composite cluster model for the $^6$He nucleus scattering from a nucleon projectile....

We show that heavy supersymmetric particles around O(100) TeV to O(1) PeV naturally appear in new inflation in which the Higgs boson responsible for the breaking of U(1)B-L plays the role of inflaton. Most important, the supersymmetric breaking scale is bounded above by the inflationary dynamics, in order to suppress the Coleman-Weinberg potential which would otherwise spoil the slow-roll inflation. Our scenario has rich phenomenological and cosmological implications: the Higgs boson mass at...

Of particular interest amongst the ONC's ~1000 members are: \theta^1 Ori C, the most massive binary in the cluster with stars of masses 38 and 9 MSun (Kraus et al. 2009); the Becklin-Neugebauer (BN) object, a 30 km/s runaway star of ~8 MSun (Tan 2004); and the Kleinmann-Low (KL) nebula protostar, a highly-obscured, ~15 MSun object still accreting gas while...

Our understanding of planetary nebulae has been significantly enhanced as a result of several recent large surveys (Parker et al., these proceedings). These new discoveries suggest that the `PN phenomenon' is in fact more heterogeneous than previously envisaged. Even after the careful elimination of mimics from Galactic PN catalogues, there remains a surprising diversity in the population of PNe and especially their central stars. Indeed, several evolutionary scenarios are implicated in the...

Continuous measurement of a quantum two-level system (qubit) by mesoscopic charge detectors has attracted wide attention in the community of solid-state quantum computation. In this work, we revisit the measurement of a charge qubit by a quantum point contact, with particular attention paid to the unique non-Markovian measurement characteristics. The finite-frequency-support feature due to non-Markovian correlation leads to a remarkable suppression of the pedestal in noise spectrum, which...

We derive a new, exact and transparent expansion for option smiles, which lends itself both to analytical approximation and, perhaps more importantly, to congenial numerical treatments. We show that the skew and the curvature of the smile can be computed as exotic options, for which the Hedged Monte Carlo method is particularly well suited. When applied to options on the S&P index, we find that the skew and the curvature of the smile are very poorly reproduced by the standard Edgeworth...
