COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- The cable franchise between Comcast and the City of Coon Rapids is being extended for another four years.
This week, the City Council approved the settlement agreement and introduced an amendment to the cable franchise ordinance.
The deal allows the city to continue receiving funding from the cable provider through the end of 2019. The current franchise runs out next year.
As part of the agreement, the city will be receiving two HD channels to broadcast community and government programming. The CTN schedule will also be listed on the electronic programming guide.
"I think it really helped our discussions quite frankly to have a city that really supports their channels through the use of the franchise fees. This city provides 100% of their franchise fees to supporting that channel as well as the peg fees and that made a big difference," says the city's cable attorney Mike Bradley.
As part of the deal, the city has signed off on a transfer of the Comcast franchise to Greatland Connections. The transfer to a different cable company is part of the 45 billion dollar merger proposed by Comcast and Time Warner Cable.
