The John Carter Brown Library's collection of books printed in Spanish America is among the finest in the world. In some areas, the collections are unmatched and include works found nowhere else. The Library has the largest collection in the world of books printed in Spanish America as a whole prior to ca. 1820, over 7,000 titles, encompassing the output of presses in Mexico, Peru, Central America, Argentina, Chile, and elsewhere. The remaining Spanish American presses represented in the JCB's...
The interest of German writers and readers in the Western Hemisphere dates back to the earliest narratives of the transatlantic Encounter. One of the first Latin editions of the Columbus letter was printed at Basel in 1493, and a German translation appeared in print in 1497. By the late sixteenth century, German publishers were issuing American travel narratives in impressive series. The biological and mineral resources of the Americas had a substantial impact on German science, and the...
The Portuguese and Brazilian books held at the John Carter Brown Library comprise one of the finest North American collections relating to Brazil before the country declared its independence from Portugal in 1822. The collection includes 650 titles before 1800 and another 500 titles from 1800 to 1822—including 165 books printed in Brazil itself after the *Impressão Regia* opened a branch in Rio de Janeiro in 1808 and presses began operating in Bahia. This collection has been compiled from a...

The John Carter Brown Library Indigenous Language collection contains texts in one or more Amerindian languages for the period before the nineteenth century. The John Carter Brown Library has one of the five largest collections of early Peruviana in the world. It is not just the number of Peruvian imprints of the colonial, independence, and early national periods held by the John Carter Brown Library that is important, however, but the diversity of those materials and in a great many instances, their singularity - being only known copies. The subjects range from ecclesiastical matters, to government papers, to indigenous language studies, and...

The French literature collection of the John Carter Brown Library is of particular interest to those interested in political, social, and intellectual history and in the literature of travel. In addition to accounts by writers such as Cartier, Champlain, Thevet, Hennepin, and Tonti, the collection is strong in translations of French works in other languages. Semi-legendary and imaginary voyages hold particular interest. The library also holds a substantial collection of laws, decrees, and...
The John Carter Brown Library holds one of the world's great collections relating to Haiti. Our rare books, maps and newspapers tell the story of the founding of the French colony of Saint Domingue (once the most lucrative colony in the Americas), its demise through the Haitian Revolution (the world's only successful slave revolution) and the founding of Haiti in its place. By providing access to this collection, the JCB hopes to stimulate interest in Haiti's remarkable history. Visit the Haiti...
The first press in Argentina appeared in Córdoba in 1764, brought by the Jesuits to serve the University there. It lasted only until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. It would not be until 1780 that printing in the viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata would begin again, this time in Buenos Aires. The JCB holds no fewer than 20 imprints from this press printed prior to 1791. During the wars of independence, the Buenos Aires press was the principal voice of the Republican forces, chiefly through...

A true and wonderful narrative of two intire particular phoenomena, which were seen in the sky in Germany. The first has happened near Riga, a sea-port town in Livonia; where a multitude of people have seen in the open sky, a coffin, fiery rods, three dead-heads, a serpent and pyramid. The second was seen at Kirschberg, four German miles from the city of Elbing, and ten German miles from Dantzick; where, from the 6th. till the 7th of May, 1763. These phoenomena stood for 48 hours with a vehement lightning and thunder-clap. Which more in particular is to be seen in the following cut

The JCB’s collection of Mexican incunabula is world renowned. In a recent census of the first books to come off the Mexican presses, between 1539 and 1600, Rosa María Fernánez de Zamora of the National Autonomous University of Mexico found that the John Carter Brown Library holds more than any other library in the world. About half of these may also be found in the JCB’s collection on indigenous languages. The vast majority of these items were purchased from Mexican collector Nicolás...
The Gazeta de Buenos Ayres ran from 7 June 1810 to 12 September 1821 and is a fundamental primary source for Latin America's Independence period. The John Carter Brown Library is fortunate to hold a virtually complete run of the Gazeta , including the Supplements and Extraordinary issues (we hold 805 of 828 issues). As a part of the Bicentennial celebrations of the Wars of Independence in Latin America, the JCB will be digitizing and making freely available on the Internet Archive all of our...
While some ephemeral printing appeared in Chile at an earlier date, the first printing press arrived there fairly late, relative to other parts of Latin America. Towards the end of 1811, Mateo Hoevel imported a press from New York, and that press is seen as the first in Chile, producing Chile's first periodical, the Aurora de Chile. The JCB holds a complete run of this pioneering periodical, along with many other unique items. http://archive.org/details/jcbspanishamerica
Guatemala was the fourth city in Spanish America to obtain a press, in 1660, brought there from Mexico by Bishop Payo Enriquez de Rivera. The JCB’s collection includes a number of works found nowhere else in the world, including printer and apothecary Cristobal de Hincapié Meléndez’s Virtudes de la habilla del Darien, que llaman de Guathemala from 1739. Four of the books in this collection are included in the Indigenous Languages collection. http://archive.org/details/jcbspanishamerica

The Philippines are included within this collection since during the colonial period the islands were administered from Mexico. Manila's first press began in 1593, and was thus the third city in the Spanish overs eas empire to have a press. As with the other two, Mexico and Peru, much of the early output consisted of doctrinal works, often in indigenous languages. The John Carter Brown Library holds more books printed in Colombia prior to 1810 than any library in the world, some held nowhere else, and otherwise unknown to bibliographers. The call to convent life drew women throughout the early modern Spanish world, from Madrid to Mexico City to Manila. For all the strictures that convents placed upon their inhabitants, they also gave women opportunities to pursue vocations of the spirit and of the mind. Within convent walls, Teresa of Ávila inaugurated her groundbreaking religious reform, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz composed some of the most ingenious poems in the Spanish language, and innumerable women wrote powerful accounts...

Exhibition at the John Carter Brown Library, Providence, Rhode Island, February-May, 2018 The physical structures that housed those who lived in slavery in the early Americas were a powerful symbol of the dehumanization of the millions of Africans and people of African descent whose labor built New World plantation societies and newly globalizing economies. They were also the concrete embodiment of the social and economic system that left them at the mercy of profit-driven slave-holders. Using...

A press functioned briefly in Montevideo during the British occupation of 1807, issuing a bi-lingual newspaper titled Estrella del Sur. Yet, only with the eruption of the wars of independence did a press reappear in that city, printing mainly viceregal proclamations. The Infanta Carlota Joaquina, wife of Portugal's prince regent João VI, sent the press from Rio de Janeiro. The royalist publications coming from Montevideo's press sought to counter the Republican press of Buenos Aires....
