you make the show. you give us a verb and then 80 minutes later you have an entire hip-hop musical show. and we started doing this in the basement of the drama book shop in, like, 2003, anthony veneziale who you'll see later tonight we were working on "in the heights. it was my first musical. we were working in the basement of the drama book shop we had no money. i was a substitute teacher laughter ] >> jimmy: wow. >> and we were working on "heights" and anthony, who worked at the book shop, would come in and distract us. he would be like, "let's rap about our day. >> jimmy: veneziale. >> veneziale >> jimmy: that's a great name. >> yeah. >> jimmy: anthony veneziale. >> and chris jackson and i were there in the basement and he was playing benny and i was playing usnavi and we would just, like, freestyle. and anthony was like, "we should do this in front people." and here we are 15 years later on broadway! people who were good at this and now there's 20 members of "freesytle love supreme. you'll see some of them tonight. >> jimmy: you did one during the blackout right in new york it was the night of the blackout of 2003 some of you were not born. i am old [ laughter ] and it was -- it was scheduled for the night -- basically, like, the power went out it was at the pitt theatre you know the pitt theatre? >> jimmy: yeah, the pitt, sure >> back when it was on 29th street. we were rehearsing for the show the next day and the power went our and we were like, "oh, pitt theatre." >> jimmy: yeah, yeah, yeah >> and then we went out and we like the entire northeast -- [ laughter ] >> jimmy: the whole city was out, yeah. >> the city and state and most of the northeast coast was out and the power was coming back sort of block by block after that blackout. >> jimmy: i remember that. i was kind of -- i had fun with that black out >> yeah, and we went to the -- [ laughter ] >> jimmy: i know it's weird to say but i did. >> yeah, well, soon as we realized it was okay - >> jimmy: okay, and everyone's fine we took care of each other >> yeah. >> jimmy: a very, take care of each other moment. >> it was another sort of new york that was -- you know what i mean? >> jimmy: it was pitch black crossing the street, like,ldinh. you'y, pdon me."

[ cheersnd >> jimmy: welcome back everybody! we are hanging out with lin-manuel miranda [ cheers and applause last time we actually did a sit down interview with you, we were in puerto rico. we went down because you guys were down there doing

"hamilton" down there. man, what you did for -- >> we raised $50 million for - [ cheers and applause and so we just announced - we just announced $4 million of that going to artists and artist organizations in puerto rico. we're about to do another $4 million in grants, and these are multiyear grants so these are artists and artist organizations who are going to tell the story of puerto rico in this crazy tumultuous time. like, we're sort of empowering that so that they tell the story of the next chapter. >> jimmy: how -- any updates how's it going down there? >> i mean, it's complicated. >> jimmy: yeah >> but it's -- every day i realize that puerto ricans are the most resilient people on the face of the earth, and just incredible i'm so proud [ cheers and applause >> jimmy: that was one of the best things we ever did ever, we just said cause you went down there, and the cast, and your wife and kids, and everybody. i'm like, they can do it for - i mean, you went for months. >> well, you did that crazy zip line, and then i can tell, i mean the shot in the arm - [ laughter ]

[ light laughter ] anyways, so we proceeded we then got into a big argument, my mom and i she like worked really hard on that sign, and she's really upset. you know, so like it's never enough for me. and then the waiter came over, and he was like, "oh is everything okay? and i was like, "oh, i'm just arguing with me mom. and he was like, "oh, i didn't realize this was your mom. and i was like, "oh no, she's dead." [ laughter ] and i was like, "no, they're an international best selling series." and she's like, "that's right honey, chins up. and two of the main themes are prejudice and depression and there's just something about breaking those two things down into a language that a child would understand that you just -- you see how pointless it is. and it would just infuriate me so much, i would have to get up from my desk a few times, and walk away. >> jimmy: and you just came from a book signing, i know they packed the place. do your fans ever ask for some weird things, like, "hey, can you take a weird photo or sign something odd or --" >> well, nothing has ever -- as of now, nothing has ever beaten this one time when a woman plopped her baby down on the table, and asked me to sign it.
