Ladies and gentlemen please welcome our
host Kennedy Center artistic director for
00:13:03
jazz Jason Moran Maria Schneider's music
has been hailed by critics as evocative of
00:13:09
majestic heart stopping the gorgeous known
for highly original and provocative big
00:13:14
band compositions Maria's childhood piano
teacher ignited her collective love of
00:13:19
music by introducing her to both classical
as dry piano they both classical. Were
00:13:25
received her bachelor's degree and theory
and composition from the University of
00:13:29
Minnesota and her master's degree in jazz
composition from the Eastman School of
00:13:34
Music in Rochester New York upon graduation
she moved to New York City where she
00:13:40
worked with 2 musical heroes and both in
the age as masters Bobrick Meyer and Gil
00:13:46
of it was to hire her as
00:13:47
a copyist and soon enlisted her as an
orchestral assistant Marie's unique voice
00:13:53
quickly emerged when she started the Maria
Schneider Jazz Orchestra and she still
00:13:58
works with many of those same musicians
today longstanding relationships that are
00:14:02
brought her to intimately understand each
of their individual voices roots music is
00:14:08
beyond categorization and
you'll hear that in just
00:14:11
a few minutes with 2 very different
compositions to me music is an expression of
00:14:15
a wife. And music is just how do I and
I am still expressing things from my
00:14:22
childhood because to me there
was so much magic there.
00:14:32
Ladies and gentlemen please welcome memory

00:14:37

Jazz Masters celebrate Tory concert
and induction Now let's hear from
00:18:23
Maria Schneider herself she gave us her
thoughts about winning this wonderful award
00:18:28
and we'll follow that with one of her
good friends singing another of her songs
00:18:32
titled walking by flashlight.
Ladies and gentlemen
00:18:38
2090 n.e.a.
00:18:40
Jazz Master Marie Snyder.
00:18:53
You guys thank you so much so beautiful
how lucky I am. I recently heard an
00:18:59
impressive interview with the leading
national scholar on educational justice Dr
00:19:05
David Kirkland he speaks of the power of
dreams to lift children to their highest
00:19:11
potential and inversely tells of the
negative effect of depriving young people of
00:19:18
dreams feeling so much gratitude
for this honor from the n.e.a.
00:19:24
And then hearing Dr Kirkland speak it
got me thinking of how my interests and
00:19:30
dreams have been supported how this
happened because of many many people along
00:19:37
the way I went to nursery school Wednesday
mornings and I loved my teacher Mrs
00:19:42
Celine one summer night she called my mom
to tell her of hundreds of fireflies
00:19:48
flying in her yard she invited mom to bring
me because she knew I'd love to see it
00:19:54
not only with the fireflies magical but
also being personally invited by Mrs Celine
00:20:01
to take in such a site and with
my piano teacher Mrs Butler
00:20:06
a key moment came early with appreciatively
called Jump in Jupiter. Analyzing the
00:20:12
chorus as we always do the last
chord presented a dominant 7th with
00:20:18
a strange note on top that I cringed at
and she said quickly she said Oh Maria
00:20:24
that's
00:20:24
a sharp 11 and someday that's
going to be your favorite. For
00:20:31
those of you that don't
know those sharp 11 being
00:20:34
a defining know in jazz her statement
enthusiastically projected
00:20:38
a future for me that I ventured to follow
these much older people helped me as
00:20:45
a child back project various possible
futures all filled with things that I
00:20:51
loved and then college with only a
flicker of a private dream of being
00:20:57
a composer. It was
00:20:59
a student teaching assistant Susan
Anderson who stopped me after hearing
00:21:03
a theory exercise I had composed and that
was played in class to suggest that I
00:21:09
consider composition as a major
that simple validation from
00:21:13
a grad student sat me on this lifelong
path I wonder how many heartfelt
00:21:21
dreams out there never see
the light of day the n.e.a.
00:21:25
Website has a very moving interview I
heard you all to look at with n.e.a.
00:21:30
Jazz Master George Benson about how his
stepfather encouraged him George wanted to
00:21:35
play guitar but his little hands were too
small and having little money as step
00:21:40
father found
00:21:41
a broken ukulele in the trash glued it
together gave it to George as its 1st
00:21:45
instrument a couple years
later he bought George
00:21:48
a guitar for $15.00 at their
local pawn shop and as
00:21:53
a teenager when George desperately wanted
to play electric guitar but the pawn
00:21:58
shops were too expensive his stepfather's
solution was to say I could make that.
00:22:04
George drew the shape you wanted on brown
paper and his stuff father sought it out
00:22:09
from the wooden cover of
George's Mother's Hope Chest.
00:22:16
I hope as you all leave tonight you'll
reflect on those that shaped you and try to
00:22:23
find ways to be that person for some child
or young adult most especially and.
00:22:30
Surely someday years after your gone that
adult will look back and say on that day
00:22:37
that person changed my life.
00:22:45
Thank. You to full
00:22:52
inspiring thoughts from n.e.a.
00:22:54

Ladies and gentlemen please welcome our
host Kennedy Center artistic director for
00:13:03
jazz Jason Moran Maria Schneider's music
has been hailed by critics as evocative of
00:13:09
majestic heart stopping the gorgeous known
for highly original and provocative big
00:13:14
band compositions Maria's childhood piano
teacher ignited her collective love of
00:13:19
music by introducing her to both classical
as dry piano they both classical. Were
00:13:25
received her bachelor's degree and theory
and composition from the University of
00:13:29
Minnesota and her master's degree in jazz
composition from the Eastman School of
00:13:34
Music in Rochester New York upon graduation
she moved to New York City where she
00:13:40
worked with 2 musical heroes and both in
the age as masters Bobrick Meyer and Gil
00:13:46
of it was to hire her as
00:13:47
a copyist and soon enlisted her as an
orchestral assistant Marie's unique voice
00:13:53
quickly emerged when she started the Maria
Schneider Jazz Orchestra and she still
00:13:58
works with many of those same musicians
today longstanding relationships that are
00:14:02
brought her to intimately understand each
of their individual voices roots music is
00:14:08
beyond categorization and
you'll hear that in just
00:14:11
a few minutes with 2 very different
compositions to me music is an expression of
00:14:15
a wife. And music is just how do I and
I am still expressing things from my
00:14:22
childhood because to me there
was so much magic there.
00:14:32

Ladies and gentlemen
00:18:38
2090 n.e.a.
00:18:40
Jazz Master Marie Snyder.
00:18:53
You guys thank you so much so beautiful
how lucky I am. I recently heard an
00:18:59
impressive interview with the leading
national scholar on educational justice Dr
00:19:05
David Kirkland he speaks of the power of
dreams to lift children to their highest
00:19:11
potential and inversely tells of the
negative effect of depriving young people of
00:19:18
dreams feeling so much gratitude
for this honor from the n.e.a.
00:19:24
And then hearing Dr Kirkland speak it
got me thinking of how my interests and
00:19:30
dreams have been supported how this
happened because of many many people along
00:19:37
the way I went to nursery school Wednesday
mornings and I loved my teacher Mrs
00:19:42
Celine one summer night she called my mom
to tell her of hundreds of fireflies
00:19:48
flying in her yard she invited mom to bring
me because she knew I'd love to see it
00:19:54
not only with the fireflies magical but
also being personally invited by Mrs Celine
00:20:01
to take in such a site and with
my piano teacher Mrs Butler
00:20:06
a key moment came early with appreciatively
called Jump in Jupiter. Analyzing the
00:20:12
chorus as we always do the last
chord presented a dominant 7th with
00:20:18
a strange note on top that I cringed at
and she said quickly she said Oh Maria
00:20:24
that's
00:20:24
a sharp 11 and someday that's
going to be your favorite. For
00:20:31
those of you that don't
know those sharp 11 being
00:20:34
a defining know in jazz her statement
enthusiastically projected
00:20:38
a future for me that I ventured to follow
these much older people helped me as
00:20:45
a child back project various possible
futures all filled with things that I
00:20:51
loved and then college with only a
flicker of a private dream of being
00:20:57
a composer. It was
00:20:59
a student teaching assistant Susan
Anderson who stopped me after hearing
00:21:03
a theory exercise I had composed and that
was played in class to suggest that I
00:21:09
consider composition as a major
that simple validation from
00:21:13
a grad student sat me on this lifelong
path I wonder how many heartfelt
00:21:21
dreams out there never see
the light of day the n.e.a.
00:21:25
Website has a very moving interview I
heard you all to look at with n.e.a.
00:21:30
Jazz Master George Benson about how his
stepfather encouraged him George wanted to
00:21:35
play guitar but his little hands were too
small and having little money as step
00:21:40
father found
00:21:41
a broken ukulele in the trash glued it
together gave it to George as its 1st
00:21:45
instrument a couple years
later he bought George
00:21:48
a guitar for $15.00 at their
local pawn shop and as
00:21:53
a teenager when George desperately wanted
to play electric guitar but the pawn
00:21:58
shops were too expensive his stepfather's
solution was to say I could make that.
00:22:04
George drew the shape you wanted on brown
paper and his stuff father sought it out
00:22:09
from the wooden cover of
George's Mother's Hope Chest.
00:22:16
I hope as you all leave tonight you'll
reflect on those that shaped you and try to
00:22:23
find ways to be that person for some child
or young adult most especially and.
00:22:30
Surely someday years after your gone that
adult will look back and say on that day
00:22:37
that person changed my life.
00:22:45
Thank. You to full
00:22:52
inspiring thoughts from n.e.a.
