The Gänseliesel is a fountain which was erected in 1901 in front of the historic old town hall. A bronze statue of a young girl with a goose stands on the central column in a fountain basin. Other birds are around the column spouting water. Today, a student who finishes a doctorate at the University of Göttingen climbs the fountain and kisses the statue of the goose girl, which is an essential part of graduation celebrations.
