Maspero's Dawn of Civilization
This is the first of the massive histories written by Maspero at the turn of the 20th century. It is encyclopaedic in scope but, due to the numerous discoveries made over the last 100 years, it has many out-of-date opinions, although the historical facts are generally reliable. It is especial useful because of its fine engravings featuring objects and maps that are mentioned in the text. Many of those objects are not available in print today. It is very well written and a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of the greatest of French historians.
