Ford Hall Forum

For several years in the 1990s, volunteer crews from BNN-TV, Boston's public access TV station, videotaped the Ford Hall Forum's fall and spring lecture series. I served on many of those crews, and from 1994 to 1997 I was the Series Producer. For most of those years we used a 3-camera production van, recording onto 3/4" videotape. Towards the end, however, we switched over to using just two stand-alone SVHS camcorders.

from "Changing Concepts of Democracy," by Michael Schudson, at the Democracy and Digital Media Conference held at MIT on May 8-9, 1998. " But Jefferson did not doubt for a moment that governing should be undertaken by this 'natural aristocracy' rather than ordinary citizens. As for the latter, the whole of their civic obligation was to recognize virtue well enough to be able to know and defeat its counterfeit. Citizens were to be democratic clinicians who could spot a rash of...

Bob McQuillen and Friends at the 1991 New England Folk Festival "Bob "Mr. Mac" McQuillen (June 27, 1923 – February 4, 2014) was a teacher, musician, and prolific composer of contra dance tunes. McQuillen was born near Boston, but his family moved to southwestern New Hampshire when he was young. Although his father and grandfather were musicians, and Bob took piano lessons as a child, he didn't grow attached to music until after his time as a Marine during World War II. He...

Norumbega Harmony Shape-Note Singing Workshop with Ginnie Ely at the 1991 New England Folk Festival, Natick, Massachusetts.  Norumbega Harmony, founded by Stephen Marini in 1976, has been leading shape-note singing workshops annually at the New England Folk Festival (NEFFA) since the 1980s. The tradition of shape-note singing draws heavily on the tunebook, "The Sacred Harp," first published in 1844. When referencing songs from that book, it's standard practice to give those songs'...

Note how they ducklings aren't eating, but crowd underneath her. Note how she steps outside of them and works her way in a circle around them. She's teaching them! Yesterday Mama brought her 12 babies up to where we were sitting on the side patio. She'd snuck up on us, apparently crossing behind the house from the other side, where we'd been feeding her and her mate for the last month or so. We figure she came looking for us, since there was no seed out there. By the time I got the seed out,...

When she first visited us back on April 20, Mama had nine ducklings, all of which could easily pass through the chain link fence (but we left the gate open anyway). Within in week or so, she'd lost two of the nine. Within another couple weeks, they were too big to slip through the fence. Now, we're wondering when the ducklings will go their own way, and their trips to visit us as a family will cease. Maybe we'll get to see them take wing! Music: Concerto No. 1 in  E major ...
