NEWS: 5/28/04 --- This music portal just recently allowed for uploading and I have added my most downloadable mp3s. For more choices check out http://stage.vitaminic.com/Electric_Son new music portal. I am now working on new materials.
BAND HISTORY: Electric Son was founded in 1991 by me, Omar J. Cayasso aka electrix. Many musicians have participated in the group since then. I have kept it alive as long as it continues to be financially feasible.
Originally, Electric Son started as an Electronic band called "Electric Son Unit." The initial band members were James Payfer on Electronic Drums, Michael Baker on Bass and me on Electric and Synth Guitar. Eventually, the group personnel changed and the "Unit" was dropped to only "Electric Son" as the music style became Jazz Fusion. On the third incarnation the members then were Ian Van Cattenburch on 4 and 5 string Bass, Paul Frederick on Alto, Tenor and Soprano Sax, and Hyam Sosnow on Drums. The unit further split into a Jazz Funk unit that replace the drummer and sax player which Ian and I called "Odd Man Out." It consisted of Jan Shullerus on Tenor Sax and Flute; Sean O'Shea on drums. The group eventually solidified into Ian, Paul and me. A new drummer, Edgar Galindo, was added that became the fourth incarnation. As time went on, Ian left the bass chair for bigger and better things and was replaced by James Kirk on bass and thus we had the fifth incarnation.
Through out the musical period it became difficult for me to financially keep the band going. I had to put an end to the project much to my sadness. I then proceeded to write solo materials based on Electronica music that can be found at Vitaminic.com.
Presently, the band is back where it originally started but with a twist. James and I decided to form Diverse Music Production to write music for the entertainment industry. We are writing very stylistic music unlike ones I ever writen or performed. At the same time my efforts are turning into writing Jazz Fusion with Twentieth Century Music techniques for the next performing incarnation of Electric Son. In the meantime, I hope the listener participate in this continuing evolutional saga of a local band that has established itself as a mythical legend through the Internet. So, look forward to interesting musical developments just around the corner.
JOURNAL: I recently had the opportunity of experiencing two Steve Coleman and Five Elements downtown LA concert and attending the three Steve Coleman workshops at Cal Arts in Valencia, Los Angeles this April. It was very musically revealing experience. I expect a significant difference in my approach to writing and playing music. Steve Coleman website is http://www.m-base.com/. CHECK IT OUT!!!
A few weeks previous to Steve, I also had the pleasure of attending a concert and meeting the very inspirational guitarist, Sheryl Bailey. Her playing was as inspirational as I have heard her on records. She is one bitchin' guitar player worth to be on the top 5 best guitarist list.
I am still struggling to put music out... but hey, who ever said Devotion equates to a road laid out in gold?!!
