An hour of favorite tracks, in an exploration of how Contra Dance artists switch up rhythms of jigs against reels to create energy, drama and mood.  Two tracks have the 6/8-rhythmic DNA of a jig working inside of a 4/4 frame; can you spot them?  I led off with a dead mic in the studio, making the hour more, or less, interesting depending on your POV; can you spot the mistakes?  The first full track, by Elixir, promotes Dancing Around In Your Bones -- Happy Halloween!

The practice of reflecting on mortality and loss, to support appreciation of life and blessings, is at least as old as civilization.   Today’s one-hour program uses music to explore those themes, during a weekend when this nation also pauses and remembers.   The music is emotional and may not be easy for some persons to engage with at this time.   The artists in this program are noted in the audio introduction.

An hour-long pre-Valentine’s day tradition of songs for bent and broken hearts, about failed and sideways romances.   Sad country dance music is pretty rare (dancing shakes out the sads) with exceptions like some Honkytonk and Cajun tunes, yet today’s tracks feature some* artists in the contra/country dance scene: The Jacob’s Ferry Stragglers*, Trapezoid*, Otis and Carla, Bonnie Raitt, Salamander Crossing, Red Tail Ring*, Oshoma Brothers*, Nora Jones, Judy Hyman and Jeff Claus*, Ernie...

For a romantic Valentine’s Day week, here's an hour of waltz music from the country/contra dance tradition.   After 90 minutes of contra dancing, a waltz is a nice, welcome change.   These are traditionally turning waltzes, with lots of whirling.   This program features Jay Ungar and Molly Mason (singing), Nighingale, Contratopia, The Free Raisins, Nightwatch, Syncopaths, Amarillis, The Jacob’s Creek Stragglers (Libby Eddy singing), Nova, Seaglass, Owen Morrison, and Clara Byom.

Today’s Ruckus! program presents an hour of music from artists who – from the 4 minute, 45 second mark on – embraced African-American identity and propelled the African/American musical legacies forward from the 19 th to the 21 st century.   Starting with 'string bands,' Bowhunter gives us an example of the essence of old-school music (for Contra dance) that is now almost exclusively identified with ‘ethnic majority culture,’ although even the old New England country dance scene had...
