In this demo for the Open Library Explorer, Internet Archive developer, Drini Cami, shows you the features of his new interface for browsing more than 4 million books in the Internet Archive’s Open Library. Still in beta, Open Library Explorer harnesses the Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress classification systems to virtually recreate the beloved bookshelf experience of a physical library. Now readers can discover new books serendipitously, browsing bookshelves organized by a century of librarians.
Scan bookshelves left to right by subject, up and down for subclassifications. Switch a filter and suddenly the bookshelves are full of juvenile books. Type in “subject: biography” and you see nothing but biographies arranged by subject matter.
