Governments in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) often raise the VAT to reduce the fiscal deficit. These VAT increases, however, disproportionately harm lower income households. This project examines public support for fiscal adjustment, in particular an increase in the VAT, and for different compensation schemes that mediate the regressive impact of the VAT on the poor. Theoretically, the project explores how fairness and trust considerations as opposed to personal material interests...

Randomized survey experiment to test how voters respond to a shift from single preference to ranked choice voting. Specifically, this project tests differences in information retention based on a set of simulated candidates. In doing so, additional evidence is sought on the cost of voting using RCV, including how much time voters need to inform themselves adequately and effects on abstention.

We will test for differences in intention to be vaccinated for COVID-19 in the United States after receiving messages under two different (positive) frames. One frame varies whether the message emphasized the effect on the individual versus the effect on the public/others. The second variation randomizes whether the message is about health versus individual freedoms/economic activity. Finally, for each of these four combinations of possible messages, the messenger will vary between two partisan...

New York University (NYU) Steinhardt’s Verbatim Performance Lab (VPL) investigates and performs words and gestures collected from found media artifacts and interview-based data, and through these investigations VPL aims to disrupt assumptions, biases, and intolerances across a spectrum of political, cultural, and social narratives. VPL defines a verbatim performance as the precise portrayal of an actual person using their exact speech and gestural patterns, literally word for word and gesture...

We use a survey experiment to discern whether citizens in the US are more supportive of foreign aid outflows from the U.S. when thinking about foreign black recipients than when thinking about foreign white recipients. We also consider whether how aid is framed—as paternalistic or cooperative—moderates this relationship with race-of-recipient.

Does the perceived race of potential coalition partners influence support for those policies? Specifically, we would like to know whether the majority population (Whites in America) lower support for foreign policy partnership when non- Caucasian leaders of non-Caucasian majority countries promote the partnership. Additionally, does public support diminish as the breadth of the agreement grows.

Recent information leaks and international scandals have cast a light on the issue of tax noncompliance by the wealthy. In this study, I examine individual decision-making over the progressivity of the tax system when noncompliance by the rich is salient, articulating four alternative hypotheses that consider both material self-interests as well as normative logic. I propose to test the observable implications of my argument with an experimental survey design, as detailed in this analysis plan.

Trust in government, political efficacy, and perceptions that the government is responsive are associated with numerous pro-social outcomes including greater political participation, social cohesion, and compliance with laws and regulations. In this study, we investigate whether communication by elected officials can alter trust in government, perceived responsiveness, political efficacy, and the intention to participate in politics.

This study explores the determinants of public attitudes towards human rights violations. When do individuals demand their governments to take action in response to human rights abuses in other countries? We seek to answer this question by employing an online survey experiment in Turkey, by asking the respondents their opinions about the alleged human rights violations in the Xinjiang province of China. Public attitudes towards human rights is key to understanding when governments take actions...

Recent studies have challenged the traditional implicit/explicit model and found an increased tolerance for explicit racial appeals. This is happening as white identity is becoming more salient and relevant to American politics. This study explores whether implicit or explicit white identity appeals are rejected by political respondents and what effect these appeals have on attitudes towards race and immigration.
