Shortwave pirate radio broadcasts are some of the most original & entertaining programming one can hear. These stations bring the reality that radio can be spontaneous, creative & unrestrained along with a direct connection to the listener, even if they're across the ocean! These broadcasts were recorded using a Ten Tec RX-340 receiver and DX Engineering's 8 Circle Array using Audacity software through an M-Audio Delta 66 interface via the Ten Tec's DC-Coupled audio tap for SSB or...

These stations bring the reality that radio can be spontaneous, creative & unrestrained along with a direct connection to the listener, even if they're across the ocean! The recordings from the 90's were made with a Grundig Satellit 500/random longwire (94'-96') & a Drake R8A/50ft. sloper (96'-00') on both reel to reel & cassette. Unless noted, the rest of these (2000 &...

The 2010s was a time of great ambivalence and disillusionment when it came to me and broadcast radio. Yeah, it's true. My love of radio sort of ended around 2008 or so, and about midway through the ensuing decade (by the time Iheartradio was taking form and becoming aggressive) my interest in local radio was dead. Although great technological advances were being made in broadcasting during this time, I didn't really care very much since we were watching local radio turning into something...

Off-air recordings of various shortwave pirate radio broadcasts as heard from my home in Texas since 2007. Mostly North American free/pirate shortwave radio broadcasts, I do occasionally snag a European station when conditions are favorable. Most were recorded using a direct line-out connection from a Palstar R30C receiver to a computer, using a shielded audio patch cord fitted with simple ferrite chokes to control the hum/buzzing noise that sometimes occurs with direct connections between a...

Paul Peters made his first radio broadcast, on Radio Essex, at the age of 16 in November 1965, using the name Paul Freeman. This offshore pirate radio station broadcast from an old WW2 Naval Fort called Knock John, which stands in the middle of the Thames estuary. In the 70's he presented shows for the BBC in the south of England. He then went to work as an appeals director for a large U.K. charity, and he thought that his broadcasting days had come to an end. But in 2006 he got a call, right...

Here you will find some interesting 'Off Air' clips of 'Offshore' Pirate Radio Stations of the 1960's. These stations broadcast from ships and old WW2 forts around the cost of the British Isles. The first of them was Radio Caroline, which started transmissions at Easter 1964, soon to be followed by a dozen or so more stations. All but Radio Caroline North and South, stopped broadcasting by the 14th August 1967, when the marine broadcasting offenses act came into force.

From February 1971 till the end of August 1974 a colourful radio ship on the North Sea aired Dutch and English programmes. That ship was the MV MEBO II and Radio Noordzee and Radio Northsea International were the names of the station. Of course, like most of the offshore radio stations, the radio ship was there to bring entertainment to its listeners, playing their favourite music, mostly for 20 hours a day — which was a lot for those years. There was a Dutch and International team of...

Continuing to archive off-air recordings of, primarily, U.S. based shortwave pirate radio shows as I heard them. I hope these off-air recordings will convey a sense of "being there" as these impromptu shows were happening. WTCR, Twentieth Century Radio, hosted by Dr. Morbius (of 1956 sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet"), plays, as the name suggests, rock and pop music classics of the 20th Century, usually with a powerful signal heard around North America and even logged in...

05 London 11 08 67 * 1967-08-11 Comments * Please note that the correct date of this show appears to be 02 August 1967. It is not a Perfumed Garden, but a late afternoon/early evening show. Judging by Peel's remarks, he has just returned to the ship after a period of shore leave. * This show is available in two versions: one on the 17-DVD Torrent, and the other as a remastered show from the blog My Old Tapes. * The author comments: "Inspired by the Final Perfumed Garden reconstruction,...

This show is in two parts. This is the first part… Johnnie is in fine form here, although somewhat hampered by the need to play his ration of Major Minor releases and, incredibly, the A. A. Allen religious segment! Major Minor Records was an Irish record label started by Phil Solomon in 1966. It had a distribution deal with Decca Records. Artists on the label included the Dubliners and Johnny Nash. Phil Solomon was also co-director of Radio Caroline in the mid-1960s. In August 1967 the Wilson...
