November is Transgender Awareness Month, a month in which many trans people reflect on the year that has passed them by. They reflect on what they have been forced to overcome - they reflect on those they have lost.
Transgender Awareness Month was brought about as an extension of Transgender Day of Remembrance. TDR was inspired after the murder of Rita Hester, a transgender African American woman, who was killed for expressing her gender identity on November 20th, 1998. A candlelit vigil was held for her attracting nearly 250 people, and has since been used to promote the education of trans lives and issues they must face.
Persephone Corvid Rose of Redwood Voice member interviewed local trans citizens of Del Norte County to get their input on the month, and unresolved issues in the Del Norte Community that creates hardship and discrimination against trans people.
