gavin newsom and jerry brown are the californians running for office, but bill clinton was still the big draw and i think tonight with this crowd he'd be running for anything. he came here to spread some of his drawing power with one time political opponent for the presidential nomination jerry brown who is running for governor and gavin newsom running for lieutenant governor. newsom started off claiming credit for his initiatives in san francisco in education and healthcare, but he made a frank observation before introducing brown and clinton. >> i'm the guy that you'll forget that was here tonight. thank you for taking the time to be here just 15 days away from real change in california. [applause] mayor newsom: thank you. thank each and every one of you for being here. it is an honor to have you here, and you have been here many times with the flag raising ceremonies. this is, in particular, very important and appropriate that we ask all of you to be here. we share so much in terms of the respective histories. i am reminded every time i go down the hallway, of this history. the mayors who are here before the city of san francisco. the city was founded over 200 years ago. that connection in mexico and the relationship with spain, all the challenges that are good and bad. this is more positive with an engaging future. this is something that is indelible in the minds of the people of san francisco. particularly those who served as custodians of this great city. she is right to say that what makes san francisco special and what makes the bay area special, and the state of california so remarkable is the ability to attract people from every conceivable walk of life, regardless of race or ethnicity or sexual

gavin newsom has been a leader of the environment before it was the sexy thing to do. he has been responsible for putting solar power at moscone center; responsible for putting power at san francisco international airport; responsible for putting solar power at the waste water facility in the bayview hunter's point. he will be responsible for putting power on our libraries, on our schools, and everywhere possible in the city and county of san francisco. we're very fortunate that this mayor has been the first mayor to create a climate action plan that will reduce the green house emissions by 20 percent by the year 2012. this mayor has also been a leader and innovation and we're looking at creating -- in harnessing paddle power below the golden gate bridge and that will be done under gavin newsom's leadership. so please put your hands together and give a warm san francisco welcome to our mayor, my mayor, gavin newsom. >> thank you. newly elected so i've got to now call him mr. president. thank you, president brooks. i want to thank the commissioners for being here and of
