that is something that came up after the las vegas massacre. folks that would actually go through, something would be done to ban, if you will, that little device that turns a semi-automatic into an automatic weapon. the president indicates he'll take some executive action or order on that. improving federal background system. that's something senator joe manchin pushed back in 2013. it also failed. it would require an expanded check, if you will, for gun sales and gun purchases over the internet. he wants to reintroduce that. we'll see where that goes. changing the legal age to buy a long gun or rifle from 18 to 21. that's something initially the president said he would be up for. seems to be backing away from that. also restricting the size of the gun magazines. this is something senator marco rubio talked about right after the florida shooting, at least in the cnn town hall, seemed to adjust his stance, acknowledging that perhaps less deaths would occur if you didn't have that capacity for as many rounds to be shot. we'll see where that goes

aurora, newtown, san bernardino, las vegas, and on and on. all the other shootings you see there and more. ar-15 style weapons. so frequently used in all of these mass shootings. chris? >> the ar-15 type rifle is ubiquitous throughout the united states right now. and if you drain the politics out of it, and you listen to the professionals, which, again, is the international association of chief of police, the largest police organization in the world, and they say, assault weapons should only be in the hands of police and law enforcement -- excuse me, military. they kill too many people too fast. that's what they're built for. in the urban setting, and particularly in the hands of young people, people who are under 18 -- or excuse me, under 21 in this case, it's even more exaggerated. they are going through problems and all kinds of issues. it doesn't belong in their hands. it's just a -- it's a weapon that can kill too many people, too fast. and law enforcement doesn't want to go up against those kind of weapons. they're the weapon of choice

we thought after las vegas something would happen. nothing happened. so my hope and my prayer for these young people, and for young people across this country, i speak as a father and a grandfather, is that our public officials will live up to their oath. will live up to their responsibilities here. will put these children and their safety ahead of their political allegiances, ahead of the fundraising and own political fate. i work with young people all the time. my job is to encourage them to believe that this system works. that the democracy is meaningful. that we can grab the wheel of history and turn in a better direction. we desperately need that at this moment. and this is the opportunity for our leaders. if they miss this opportunity, people will become more cynical after each one of these incidents. and, you know, it remains to be seen. i wish i could be more hopeful, but the example we have seen to this point is not very encouraging. >> but it's happened so many times, david, during republican and democratic administrations, presidents, but in
