>> well, you read the headlines here in saudi arabia. they're hugely proud to be hosting this, albeit virtual. inspire the world. this is the few they're taking saying cross into the future. which really is the saudi -- itself as a country that sees itself transforming, its economy, its outlook, its perspectives, its people over the coming generations. so these things match up, hosting the g20, but the biggest issue is coping with the pandemic. that's why this is virtual. and the headline on this paper is the sort of answer, if you will, and i think you may have the picture there, as well, of what to do if you can't get the leaders together in real space and realtime. well, you project a big picture of them on the front of one of the beautiful old buildings here in riyadh. that's what the saudis have done. it isn't just about confronting the issues that come in the future and the economic fallout. the saudis are confronting their own diplomatic situation, if you will. they had such a close relationship with president trump. and i put tha

even saudi arabia had two priorities going into the summit. one was the covid-19 response and equitable distribution of the vaccines going forward. and number two is climate change. they made it extremely clear. so, donald trump coming in and kind of breaking all the dishes and deciding to focus instead on leaving the climate accord was a shock to put it no other way. we know that joe biden, the president-elect, has said he will rejoin the accord itself. and on many occasions over the weekend, the g20 leaders started to talk about multilateral agreements, having global collaboration going forward. even ursula von lieden, the former german politician in angela merkel's party came back and said on many occasions without mentioning donald trump, we look forward to more collaboration in the future, and particularly when it comes to climate change. it did seem like donald trump popped into the wrong venue at the wrong time because it was a session talking about safeguarding the environment. and he was giving the reasoning why to pull out for the u.

nic robertson joins me from saudi arabia with more on this virtual summit. nic, hi, good to see you. give us some sense of how mr. trump's appearance or perhaps nonappearance at some of these key meetings has played out there. >> reporter: i have to say it's incredibly hard to judge how it actually played out, because the white house, unlike, say, 10 downing street or the president of turkey's video statement was released, president putin's video statement was released, the white house didn't release a statement, it gave a readout, how strongly president trump tackled coronavirus, how well they were doing developing vaccines, how well the u.s. economy was doing. that language is really out of kilter with what we heard from the other leaders, the ones i've named, as well the european commission president, all talking about working together, the importance of working together, unity, a unified approach. i think some of the real keys here to how president trump's speech may have gone down, the words that the king in his opening statement, the king spoke again a

nic robertson is in saudi arabia with this report on the summit, nic? >> reporter: you get the feeling that this virtual summit, there's a submessage from everyone towards president trump. and that is, good-bye, but don't let the door hit you on the way out. we heard from the saudi investment minister saying when the covid-19 pandemic started, the world looked for leadership and couldn't see it. he said some leaders had turned inward that they'd become nationalistis tism ic. when king salman of saudi arabia gave the opening speech, one of the points he picked up on was the importance of the world trade organization to combat future pandemics that sort of stiffened and strengthened the economy so poorer economies wouldn't be hurt in the future. this also seemed to an dig at president trump. president trump doesn't like and doesn't value the world trade organization, has tried to rundown its importance, so a counter narrative there. we also heard that from president erdogan of turkey as well, talking about the importance of the world trade organization. s
