last year was california's most destructive wildfire year on record. jeff ranieri joins us with more on why. we're in a drought partially, right? >> you have that exactly right. it wasn't only a bad rain season this year but last year as well. 15.91% of california now under the worst level of drought. that is exceptional drought. and this year we're down 8-21 inches on that rainfall. snowpack finished 59% of normal. we'll get a closer look here, and that darker red color over the north bay, contra costa, alameda counties, that's the exceptional drought that once again will fuel some stronger fires if they do start. we'll talk more about our temperatures this week and what's keeping us from getting record set days. >>> the investigation continues into a fire that broke out near one of the bay area's most popular trails. the fire is being called suspicious at the fremont mission peak regional park. it was way off the regular trail and there was no dramatic weather in the area, which raises a lot of questions for investigators. >>> new and startling detai

california becomes a state in 1850. so many people arrive, an arrangement is made underneath the guidance of a great negotiator. his name is senator henry clay. we're standing on the edge of clay street. he shepherds in california as the 31st state of the union. this was not a small deal. the united states at this point were 30 states of which 15 were slave holding and 15 were free. so the 31st state would tip the balance. as it is, he brought california in as a free state. now, an interesting problem arise which was, the united states was in two sections. shortly after the gold rush about ten years later, silver was discovered in nevada. there was a silver rush, the great comstock load. the wealth of the nation tipped to the far west. here's the problem. if you take a look at this map, this map is roughly from 1860. the white portion on your right-hand side are the states up to that point. then there are -- there is a yellow area which is the territories and then suddenly, there was california on the pacific rim. this
