l.a. is all about. i've been fortunate to be in professional roles in the l.a. conservancy and with the city of los angeles and the birdseye view for how historic preservation can make a difference in communities around the city. i wanted to try to capture a much more interesting and new wants to an complex los angeles that i have come to know and what i saw is that historic preservation while it's frequently kind of mischaracterized as being about stopping change or preventing progress of preservation has really been a primary engine for change throughout los angeles, and it has been a tool that's been revitalizing our downtown or historic downtown. it has been transforming neighborhoods and creating economic regeneration across our cities and even helping to address our housing crisis in california with affordable housing. i wanted to try to bring back downtown l.a.'s history both for angelenos who may not fully internalize the positive changes that are around them and then to those beyo

here in south l.a. wetlands, there's proof that coyotes use this area because i'm finding coyote scat inside these fences. coyotes are species that most people know live in the l.a. area, but people think that they live in the mountains-- mountainous areas or griffith park, where there's more open space, but really don't think of them as animals able to adapt to this type of landscape. [car alarm beeps] back to the ranger station. yeah, so, we're in griffith park, and here is one right here. this park is surrounded by freeway, by urbanization, by some major barriers for wildlife. so, we just saw two, maybe 3 coyotes within this picnic area. so, they know that this resource is here on a regular basis. coyotes are doing pretty well in this urban landscape thanks to their adaptability, but the mountain lions are another story. they really need some help if they're going to have a population here for multiple generations to come. i use camera traps, which are motion-activated cameras that have sensor in fro

the l.a. chapter also investigated the crime. as they began to investigate the crime, it became apparent that it was almost impossible for a lantern to cross that kind of explosion. here's a picture of the eagle office because the walls of the house were knocked to the ground so the lamp or lantern theory, they should doubt on this theory. now it's a long investigation process, many months of investigation and i don't have time to do to help all of it but in the aftermath of the murder, there is an elaborate cover-up of evidence that would have led to criminal conviction. the corner in his investigation refused to admit evidence that was set by vigilantes. the lantern itself so intact i supposedly blew up was not entered into the investigation and the district attorney, it became clear in the midst of this cover-up but there was also an organized resistance to the cover-up and the efforts to seek justice for the family were also ongoing. 1946, a leader of the los angeles socialist workers part

beat l.a. indeed. live in san francisco, back to you. >>> well, we have more breaking news tonight as we look live at the port of oakland. we learned a little while ago a massive cargo ship, docked there right now, made some unusual movements a few days ago near that oil pipeline that ruptured. kpix5 has been digging into it. >> reporter: the ship came here to the port of oakland after leaving orange county. it was spotted this morning and now there is an investigation underway to see if the ship's anchor played a role in rupturing the pipeline. chopper 5 captured the express docked at the port of oakland on wednesday. tonight we are getting a look at the ruptured pipeline in this video posted by the coast guard. according to the associated press it tracked data that looks at the traffic that the ship made three unusual movements over two days that appeared to put it over the pipeline. the captain, who publishes an off shore blog says there are many unanswered questions as they look into whether or not
