there are 25,000 lgbt people over the age of 55, but few about lgbt seniors can be identified and utilize senior services or live in residential facilities. lgbt seniors do not feel safe to be out to their service providers or to live in residential facilities for fear of discrimination. all too often, lgbt seniors hide their identity or choose to leave san francisco in the comfort and safety of their friends and loved ones to find the services and housing been need. san francisco can and must do better than that. besides open house senior housing, the 55 laguna development also provides much needed rental housing, affordable housing, preservation of historic buildings, and a wonderful park. this is the kind of mixed in calm development that makes san francisco the kind of livable city we can all take pride in. we need to move this project forward. thank you so much. >> good evening. i'm a board member -- we are encouraged that this project will bring new residents to our neighborhood. we are pleased that 50 units will be included as well as senior housing that will add great neighbors. w

that will be welcoming to lgbt seniors. we're very proud to be partnering with mercy house in california on constructing this project. we strongly support the construction of as much affordable housing as possible, including the 50 units of below market family rentals. we're very happy and pleased that a consensus has been reached on reaching the critical goal. open house and mercy housing will be renovating richardson hall. it will include 40 usance of housing -- units of housing. it will include a retail space. next to the retail space in richardson hobbled the 27 square feet of open house service offices -- richardson halt will be a 2700 square feet of open house service offices. we'll be constructing a new building which will have 70 units of housing. it will include about 8700 square feet of an activity center that will be open to residents and lgbt seniors from across the city. our vision has always been to combine housing with service base an activity center to create a vibrant community hob for residents and the bro

something that we as lgbt individuals want to change the definition of the word marriage. just as we didn't have to change the word army when lgbt individuals joined the army we are not seeking to change the word marriage. we are seeking simply to join marriage. families the law be personal commitment and responsibility supported by friends, family and the larger community. to me the idea of love and marriage equality is just that. love. to be sure there are numerous practical matters. provisions that allow us to care for and protect our families. in the state of minnesota alone there are 515 laws to which committed lgbt couples have no access. and examination conducted by government accountability office in the aftermath of the passage of the defense of marriage act revealed over 1,100 federal rights and protection from which lgbt couples are borrow. these range from areas that affect our lives as fundamental and far-reaching an end of life issues, healthcare, credit, taxes, legal relationships, public-service, raising children, property ownership and so on. it is importa

this is not an issue of whether the owners have to be lgbt or not. i am not quite sure why that is to continually came up from those supporting this. i have always felt very welcome at the eagle. to imply a new ownership would be more open than the eagle, i have always felt very welcome there in an lgbt establishment. there is diversity in the lgbt community that was blown over in this conversation. there's a difference between badlands and the eagle versus the cafe. there is diversity in the lgbt committee that has to be acknowledged as well. that is not with the liquor license transfers about today, for me. for me as a neighborhood supervisor, i need to see that outreach has been done. i need to see support in the neighborhood. this is not market street where less out reach needs to happen because it is a more commercial district. i think this is very much a neighborhood. there is definitely residential in this area. there are also a number of small businesses in the area that could have outreach with them. for that reason, i was going to motion to

i have been part of the lgbt community. one of my greatest i school memories was being out with stop aids, probably as the youngest female member of the time. as an adult, i have been involved with san francisco general and the haight ashbury clinics. i am a little nervous. i have also been involved in burning man and the art projects. i know eli spear personally. he is a close friend of mine. i have worked with him closely on projects. i know his dedication to the community and art is incredible. that is why i am here today, because i have been a patron of the eagle talon. i have loved the eagle tavern very much. i miss it. i am also here today to say it is empty right now. i know there is an amazing opportunity. i think is part of a group that can bring something special and new to the space. with their dedication, it can be a new place of art and community, music and bring everybody together. maybe not in the same way it used to be, but in a new way that we can also celebrate. thank you. supervisor elsbernd: thank you. n

i will say that there hasn't been a lot of data collected on lgbt people, and in particular lgbt youths. and i'd like to just sort of give props to the obama administration, um, for in many of their departments being real leaders in this area beginning to collect those statistics which will give us the data to come up with programs and strategies that are appropriate for the degree of the problem. um, what little data we do have shows it's clear enough though, the negative impact of homophobia and transphobia means that lgbt youth is are at greater risk of dropping out of school, and they experience harassment, violence, homelessness, hiv infection and suicidal ideation at much higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts. towards the end of 2010, um, it was in this context that we have always thought about suicide among lgbtñr youth, but particularly at the end of 2010 with the media coverage of some very high-profile suicides -- and i should say at this point this presentation i also mean those who may not actually be lgbt. they suffer from the same discrimination and violence t
