big storm out in the midwest. this morning, we had heavy snow across portions of particularly eastern kansas. south and east of that, they had a little sleet. right through there. and even further south, shower activity. thunderstorm activity. this storm is actually headed for milwaukee. here in the eastern flank, warmer airs coming ahead of it. in fact, it's in the 50s and 60s in the carolinas. you can see that rain across kentucky. that precip is going to move into our sort of marginally cold air. for a little while in the afternoon, look for a little snow and sleet. most of it is going to melt. tomorrow night, we'll probably end up with light rain and drizzle. but we'll look at rain here on saturday, as the second low pressure develops offer the east coast. and heads up toward new england. once again, they'll probably see some snow. but for us, winds coming off the ocean mean a damp, chilly, but not cold enough for snow situation here. on saturday. looks like they could see a good half inch of rain maybe on sat

a piece of the big midwest storm is coming in here. our temperatures are almost as cold in the midwest, but the moisture is not prepared to do much. here is chesapeake bay. we're getting a little mix of precipitation showing up on the radar, but the air is dry and not all of it is hitting the ground. up to the north, radar is indicating some sprinkles and a mix of precipitation is possible. none of it is very heavy. down to the south could be a few degrees warmer and a little more liquid if it is even hitting the ground. here are the temperatures. westminster is light at 32 along with frederick and gaithersburg. a little chillier than that when you get to the mountains in the west. whether we get liquid or frozen precipitation will depend on how far north or south we are. the other thing is, any of this precipitation during the day is going to be rather light. here is the satellite image to show the clouds overhead. these are all tied into the big storm, which has now moved into the upper midwest and the great lakes. the front itself i

but that massive winter storm that buried the midwest is rolling into our region. it's not bringing snow but it will likely cause problems for our area, especially during the evening rush. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein has what you need to know in a few minutes. >>> one man is in critical condition after his tractor-trailer overturned on the beltway in maryland. it happened at route 450 in lanham, some lanes are still closed. megan mcgrath on the scene with the latest. how this could impact your commute. >> you can see the mess that we have here on the inner loop of the beltway. the tractor-trailer which left the roadway went through the guardrail and actually went smashing through the sound barrier here along a side of the beltway. they have a crane on the scene. a very short time ago i talked to the tow truck driver. he thought it would take a half hour to get the truck out of here. there's still a cleanup job ahead of them. the saddle tanks ruptured. we have diesel fuel on the ground. they have to clean up the debris before they can reopen these lanes.

that same system in the midwest is headed our way. storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson is tracking the storm. what is the latest? >> the latest is we will not see anything close to what the midsection and midwest have been getting, but we are going to see a little bit of sleet and a bit of snow. yes, this time tomorrow. in fact it will probably start at the tail end of the morning rush, and around noontime. with less wind around the area. tomorrow morning, cold for sure, but i think dry for the bulk of the morning rush, around 11:00 a.m., could start to see a few flakes starting to show up, and i think some spotty problems during the asp and during the evening hours, just spotty problems. i wanted to show you just how huge this system is and why it's causing so much trouble. snow all the way from areas of iowa, down through illinois right now, and then you've got a little area of sleet and some heavy rain that extends down to the south. in fact we'll get a bit of all of that. snow, sleet, then eventually some rain. i'll give y

we have a big mess in the midwest as you've been alluding to. here's what it looks like on the radar this morning. the bright white are heavy snow squalls moving across wichita and that snow is just ready to move into kansas city where it's going to snow hard it looks like for about the entire day. our forecast models are showing that snow pivoting from the southwest to the northeast as we go throughout the morning and the afternoon hours, so wichita will see improvements late today, but northeast kansas and most of missouri we're going to be looking at heavy snowfall for the next at least 12 hours and how much more snow? look at this purple area anywhere in here we could be talking about maybe a foot maybe a little bit more than that. the snow rates are incredible this morning they're one to two inches per hour and it could snow like that for the next 6 to 12 hours in some locations. we don't want to forget about folks in the south from houston to new orleans the southern end of this storm, there's the potential for severe weather as we head la
