nbc bay area's christie smith is at ocean beach for us with the new details. christie? >> reporter: all five of those teens were taken to the hospital. two of them listed in serious condition. but firefighters tell me tonight that they will remain optimistic for all of them to recover. but this was really quite a rescue effort out here. in fact one of the teens, we're told, was unconscious when he was pulled from the water and this did include help from of course trained rescue swimmers but also from surfers who were on the scene here at ocean beach. firefighters say they started getting multiple 911 calls at around 1:30 this afternoon of victims in the water. originally they thought six people needed to be rescued. ocean beach is of course known for its dangerous rip current. the response was fast. dozens of firefighters and others came out. rescue swimmers from the park service were assisted by two surfers. they helped three people out before firefighters arrived. the firefighters and rescue swimmers helped two other people who had drifted a half a football field from
