Mobile networks of today do often not provide desired flexibility when value
added services are about to be introduced. This since it often is a rather
complicated and lengthy task to launch such services. The Wireless Application
Protocol (WAP) addresses this issue by introducing the concept of the Internet as
a wireless service platform.
The Internet has proven to be an easy and efficient way of delivering services to
millions of “wired” users. In 1997, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Unwired
Planet took the initiative to found WAP Forum, which mission is to bring the
convenience of the Internet into the wireless community as well. WAP Forum has
today gained great credence in the wireless industry all over the world, more than
90 of the world’s leading companies in the business of wireless
telecommunication are members as of February 1999.
