I love a good compilation for two reasons - they are a great way of discovering new music … and as I like to listen to a variety of music, a well curated compilation with a number of contributors gives me the variety I seek. This time last year I never dreamed I would have my own netlabel … and I certainly never dreamed I would be putting out my first compilation on said netlabel … a compilation that showcases wonderful independent talent. Some of the artists featured on this compilation...

The name UNATTRIBUTED is a play on words.  The artist is a long-time advocate of Creative Commons licensing, which fundamentally incorporates the idea of attribution. The idea of numbering the titles of releases and tracks is derived from a series of releases in which artists are allowed to explore any style of music they want, free from the confines of their percieved identity. UNATTRIBUTED is a cross-style project that is currently focusing on ambient, abstract, experimental, drone, and...

Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons make the spookiest of sci-fi inspired ambient music and "11 Tales of Space and Intrigue (waag_rel135)" is a superb addition to their body of work.  Theirs are the sounds of abandoned space-stations and far-off moons and the imagined goings-on of the extra-terrestrial stars of loved children's TV shows ... their evocative music is the music that feeds the imagination and inspires daydreams of burning worlds and the most captivating of deserts on the Red...

It's been a while ... It's been a while since the last release on waag ... and in this time James Hoehl has been busy creating a wonderfully dark and deeply atmospheric ambient album that sits effortlessly with the darker music that have come before it.  My love of atmospheric ambient music is well known and "A Dark Time" is a welcome addition to my personal rotation ... it is evocative and immersive, it entices me in with the opening track - "The Dream Stars" - and holds...

In the Green Light (waag_rel056) by Ade Hodges & Cousin Silas is the next instalment in an ongoing series of collaborations between the two artists. It features six earthy, nearly impenetrable walls-of-sound that are not for the claustrophobic. In the Green Light (waag_rel056) is an immense album of truly immersive beauty, one that is as spatial as it is aural. There is both a breadth and a density within these tracks that takes the listener's breath away, it is as if Hodges and Silas have...

"Space Time Mantra (waag_rel042)" is a wonderful series of darker ambient soundscapes from Ade Hodges and Cousin Silas ... a collaborative collection of sci-fi music that could easily act as the soundtrack to our favourite stories by the likes of Lovecraft and Ballard. Both expansive & dystopian, these sounds present the future of our dreams as being more akin to the stuff of our nightmares ... they give the listener an all too brief insight into the eerie unsettling liminal state...

"The birth pains of Titan 6 (waag_rel039)" is the soundtrack to a story that has yet to be told about the ill-fated sixth colony on Titan. It also marks the solo debut on weareallghosts of a man steeped in both ambient music and pulp science fiction - Ade Hodges. I've had this album for a wee while and have really enjoyed the themes it presents ... Ade has gone out his way to create an album that could easily be the soundtrack to a cult sci-fi film ... something dark and unsettling. I...

"You are Alison G. Madrigal (waag_rrl003)" by Alison G. Madrigal is an interesting listen ... so interesting, in fact, that I agreed to rerelease it on weareallghosts. "Who is Alison G. Madrigal?" I hear you ask ... I can't say for sure for she is shrouded in secrecy. I do believe, however, that Todd Elliott aka Toaster is involved with this project in some way ... he introduced me to her, for one, and the sounds bear a cunning similarity to some of his output. I was delighted when Apta offered this EP for release on weareallghosts... it's the kind of music we wish to promote by the kind of musician worthy of promotion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! Thomas I have made this EP as an attempt to fuse together the contrasting styles of music I love. By encompassing the melodic sensibilities of instrumental post-rock with the slightly skittish rhythmic nature of IDM and electronic music, I am trying to refine my sound into a cohesive whole. What can I say about Apta's music without slipping into my usually over-wrought verbosity? Simply put… I love Apta's music and was bowled over when he gave me the demos for 'Visions'. I was and am very impressed with his foresight and imagination. That said… I was even more impressed with his ability to make his vision reality… making some super-tasty sounds with some fab kit (I checked with one of my music nerd friends… because I'm clueless when it comes to kit… he was impressed). I think it was the original "Ballard Landscapes" on Shaun Blezard's seminal Earth Monkey Productions imprint that introduced me to the rabbit hole that is Cousin Silas' music. How do you follow up 12 hours of creative expression from a master & his friends?  By releasing the best work yet by Brother Saturn, that's how! I was genuinely worried as to how to follow Cousin Silas' recent magnum opus (a series of recordings that have raised nearly £400 for charity at the time of my typing) but when I heard what Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn had for me, I was delighted.  "Apollo, can you hear me?" is possibly Brother Saturn's best work to date, certainly...

Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn is a busy guy, he creates music under a number of monikers including Brother Saturn and Chromadrift. I have enjoyed watching his growth as a musician and am proud of the Brother Saturn releases I’ve put out on weareallghosts. “Sunburst” is his latest work as Brother Saturn and it is, by my reckoning, his most accomplished to date. There is a dreamy, analogue otherworldliness about his compositions here: it is experimental ambient music that feeds the head...

I've know Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn for a wee while now. I'm a big fan of his album "Everest" recorded under his other moniker The Northern Hemisphere … and was deeply intrigued when he approached me to release his first ambient-orientated album via weareallghosts. Is it just me or do these drones get better with each instalment? Cousin Silas continues to astound me with this - his 6th dronescape for weareallghosts. His ability to engage the listener in a fully immersive sonic environment truly amazes me. I have all his dronescapes on my iPhone and have been known to move from one to another when I am in need of extended periods concentration and/or escape. As before, an MP3 version of this dronescape will be available here on Archive for free … with a...

I have discovered a new pleasure ... lying in my hammock in my backgarden listening to Cousin Silas' dronescapes. I live in Scotland so I don't get many opportunities but when I do ... like I did today ... it was simply stunning. The 7th instalment in Silas' dronescapes takes the series forward ... it is 72 minutes of floaty, blissed-out, musical sunshine. It fitted perfectly with a lazy rest-filled day in the garden ... reading and recharging in the sun. I've never liked the tag 'chill out...

I genuinely get excited when I get a wee message from Cousin Silas telling me that his latest dronescape is in our shared dropbox folder. I have grown very fond of these longform drones and consider them an utter treat to listen to … and I hope you will enjoy the eighth instalment as much as I do! As before, a MP3 version will be available here on Archive for free with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for 'Pay What You Want' … which does include free. All we would ask is that if you...

On the 8th instalment of the Dronescape series, Brian Bourassa said this ... "If your a "Dronie," then Cousin Silas's Drone series should be topping your list. I'd invite you to follow the progression from "Dronescape 001 through Dronescape 008" and beyond." I couldn't have put it better myself! Thanks Brian. For the 9th Dronescape ... Cousin Silas has really pulled out all the stops ... creating an utterly engaging longform piece that is exceptionally expansive...

I recently met Cousin Silas for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was taken by how genuinely lovely he was … a real down-to-earth chap with a wicked sense of humour … generous to a fault and a pleasure to be with. I say this because whilst I was down staying with him … he spoke of the Dronescape series and made particular mention of this instalment - Dronescape 010 (waag_drs010) - his tenth dronescape. He spoke of this being his best yet. Not in a bragging kind of way because he...

Cousin Silas' dronescapes have really grown from strength to strength ... developing into something of 'must have' recording for me. I tend to listen to at least one a day and love the headspace they give me. I know I am not alone ... and really appreciate all the comments I receive when one is released. I also value the support that some in the WAAG community provided and do not take it for granted. So this weekend we are going to put out not one ... but TWO dronescapes - 011 and 012. I...

It has been just over a month since we released the previous 2 instalments of Cousin Silas' Dronescape series ... and I couldn't wait to bring another one to you. And what an instalment this is!!! The 13th Dronescape is a bold, upfront exploration of space and time through ambient sound. It is 70 minutes of sheer of unadulterated joy ... a truly immersive longform journey with an almost tangible sense of cinematic proportion ... and I, for one, love it. This series just gets better and better....

The Advent period is a very busy time for me and sometimes it feels like the run-up to Christmas is too much. When it gets to that point I take solace in the music of Cousin Silas and, in particular, his dronescapes. The fourteenth dronescape (yes, we have released fourteen dronescapes in 2013!) is a welcome addition to his canon ... a body of work that just seems get better as time passes. I won't say anymore other than to implore you to take the time out to go deep. I know I will. An MP3...

I was recently asked what I get out of running a wee netlabel ... I replied almost immediately: I help bring beauty to this world. I'm not a musician. I wish I was but I am not. Neither am I an artist in the pen-and-paper / paint-and-canvas kind of way. Again, I wish I was but I am not. Whilst I am kind of handy with a camera and have a thing for arranging typefaces on images, the way I bring beauty to this world is to help musicians like Cousin Silas get their sounds out there. I don't believe...

May I start off with a big thanks to both Thomas Mathie and Cousin Silas for giving me the opportunity to write the liner notes for the 17th release of the Dronescape Series. That said, I'd like to talk about the "cancerous bubble" that began to grow as a result of this opportunity - an ego bubble, I would imagine. It began with a series of email conversation which eventually led to my thinking I might offer Cousin Silas a few ideas on his dronescapes! I hear you all now. "SAY...

George Carlin once said ... "Have you ever started a path? No one seems willing to do this. We don't mind using existing paths, but we rarely start new ones. Do it today. Start a path. Even if it doesn't lead anywhere." This saying resonates with me for a number of reasons, too many in fact for here & now. What I will say, however, is how much I respect Cousin Silas' Dronescape project and how, in creating his own path, he’s created something that a lot of people have gained...

Cousin Silas and I connected many years ago when I said some nice things about his work on Shaun Blezard's seminal 'Earth Monkey Productions' netlabel. Silas had released 'Geographics' and his first two Ballard Landscapes on EMP and I had picked them up. They were my kind of atmospheres: dark, eerie & powerfully emotive ... they conjured up desolate spaces and lands dotted with Cyclopean buildings before I had read Lovecraft and knew what a Cyclopean architecture was. "Great watery...

Twenty. Yes, twenty! This is the twentieth instalment in Cousin Silas' Dronescape series and it sees him exploring the darker recesses of ambient music. Clocking in at 72 minutes, this is a deeply immersive journey into the unknown. I have spoken before of the association I have with Silas' work and the author H.P. Lovecraft, with the Cthulu Mythos, in particular, really sticking with me. This Dronescape reminds me of the first Lovecraft story that I read: "The Nameless City". I read...

Welcome to the twenty-first dronescape from Cousin Silas, another post-70 minute piece from someone who I personally think is at the top of their game. Coming off the back of his first CD on weareallghosts, this dronescape provides a fitting rest. It is an open and spacious drone filled with wonder and the anticipation of the unknown. It is a delight. I hope you enjoy Dronescape 021 as much as I do. - Tx

A new year and a new Dronescape, Cousin Silas’ twenty-third to be exact … if you discount the mini-dronescape on “the sound of Silas”. When Cousin Silas sent the .wav file through he described his latest endeavour as rather dark … “’tis a bit dark, m’ lad” was his exact phrase. I have come to expect that when my favourite Cousin says “dark” he means wonderfully atmospheric, haunting soundscapes that thrill and engage me, the listener. Dronescape 023 is no exception. This...

In a recent blog post, Joseph Mosby of josephmosby.com talked about using music to get “into the zone” … the zone being that point when we have complete concentration, complete focus. In his post - http://josephmosby.com/2015/02/15/the-psychology-of-a-small-playlist-on-repeat.html - he quotes Arkansas psychologist Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis who wrote a book called “On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind” that tangentially delves into this question … how does music on repeat help...

Earlier today I watched a programme that explored sensory deprivation using a flotation tank. The idea of nothingness was an idea both compelling and frightening to the host: sixty minutes of nothing is a rather intimidating prospect … just you and your thoughts. I wonder if that’s what some people think about longform drones … that a post-sixty minute ambient soundscape is, in some way, a scary proposition. I don’t know. What I do know, however, is that I like to be alone with my...

Today is a significant day for me, it is my Wedding Anniversary. I am married to Olwyn and have been for the last 18 years. We have seen so much together. I guess it is true what’s said: time does fly when you are having fun. Time is wonderful concept, isn’t it? it flies when we enjoy ourselves and drags when we don’t. Days, weeks, months, years; they all move so quickly and just like any chocolate bar, we don’t get as much now as we used to. That’s why I love Cousin Silas’...

Sometimes life just doesn’t go to plan: People you hold in high regard let you down, risks you take don’t pay off and end up costing you dear, and that great idea that you had turns out to be anything but; you know what I mean. When life gets like that I try to retreat, refocus, and restart; and I greatly appreciate music that helps me do that. The twenty-eighth dronescape from Cousin Silas is one such piece of music and, to be honest, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Its rich,...

It has been a while since we had a dronescape from Cousin Silas, two months in fact, and in that time I have come to really appreciate his longform work. I know I have said this before but it needs said: they give me space, they give me time out to think and to concentrate. I guess when the one thing you crave is for some down time that when you get it, you cherish it. This dronescape, Cousin Silas’ twenty-ninth is nearly 80 minutes in length. It is a real journey in sound, one I found to be...

I am a huge fan of Cousin Silas’ dronescape series and get rather excited when I receive a link to the latest edition … I am genuinely surprised that we are now on the thirty-first edition AND the soundscapes presented seem to be getting better and better. The thirty-first dronescape from Cousin Silas has me in space. It is a wet Saturday in Scotland, the 13th February to be exact … I am sitting in my living room looking out to rainy sleet and a greyish sky … and Cousin Silas has me in...

Cousin Silas’ thirty-second dronescape is dedicated to the memory of Dame Zaha Hadid, the exceptional British architect who died recently. According to Wikipedia, Hadid liberated architectural geometry with the creation of highly expressive, sweeping fluid forms of multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry that evoke the chaos and flux of modern life. I marvel at Hadid’s creations, especially the Riverside Museum in Glasgow (pictured on the album cover) … she was a true...

It has been a wee while since we had a dronescape from Cousin Silas, partly because he’s been so busy releasing collaborations and albums on other netlabels. I’ve spoken before about my excitement when I get a dropbox link sent to me … I guess I’m as big a fan as anyone of Dave’s work and still get the feels when I hear a new dronescape from him. Dronescape 033 is an absolute delight: it is the kind of music you want to hear of an lazy Sunday afternoon or a warm bubblebath, music that...
