Hi everybody,

As you may already know, we've been working on a new version of the archive.org web site. It became available as a beta in November of last year, and started being more widely used in January.

You can read a blog post about the new site that explains reasons for the change and talks a little about some of the evolution the site has seen.

About 94% of archive.org users are using the new web site today. We can see from anonymized statistics that more people are playing and downloading files (now called Views) , more people are creating accounts and favoriting (bookmarking) things. So taken as a whole, the new site is doing really well.

But we realize that for people who use this site on a regular basis, the changes may not be seen as positive. To be clear, NONE of the following has changed: the content, the search engine, the upload process, or download numbers (called Views now).

We will be asking people to try the new site this week (or try it again, if you've already seen it). For a limited time you will still be able to exit the new site (exit button in the upper right corner) to return to the classic view, but we encourage you to give us feedback. If there are things we missed or areas of confusion, we want to address them. The classic site will go away at some point - we cannot maintain both indefinitely - and we want to make sure the new site serves your needs.

There are several videos about the new site that should answer most functionality questions. Jeff Kaplan and I are happy to answer questions in this thread as well.

Thanks,

Alexis Rossi
Director of Web Services

Please make the full numeric data used for your claims available. The data charts I've seen do not seem to match the claims in this or other postings. 94% users with 85% responding "No" to trying it again is not a successful thing.

A question that immediately comes to mind is; if the "people who use this site on a regular basis, the changes may not be seen as positive", who are you changing for?

Hi Alexis & Jeff - I mainly use the Live Archive section, and one of the things that I miss the most about the new site design are the features on the Live Archive landing page. specifically I REALLY like seeing the section "Recently Reviewed" & "This Just In". I have relied on these over the years to both learn about new groups (Recently Reviewed) and what things are new on the Archive. I've looked for a link to these two areas in the new design and could not find them.
I would love to see these incorporated on the new landing page. My apologies if I have simply overlooked their location - in which case, could kindly direct me to them. Thanks for all your work to keep the Archive fresh and active! - Chris

Well, I'm not Alexis or Jeff, I think I can help.

photo lma1.jpg

1. The arrows marked with "1" are both ways to find the "This Just In" uploads. The top one is self-explanatory. The one on the bottom is achieved my moving your mouse over "Date Published" on the sort bar and selecting "Date Archived" from the three selections. Date Archived is the date the item was uploaded.

2. The arrow marked with "2" is a way to see the "Recently Reviewed" items. Again, move your mouse over the "Date Published" item on the sort bar and select "Date Reviewed".

Hope that helps.

Also, for the most recently uploaded items, if you click on the "About" tab (to the left of the Collection tab) and scroll down a bit, about the 10th link down is "Most Recently Added Items". It is linked to a preloaded sort page that will give you the same results as the method I described above.
