the older i get, the hokier those lyrics become - lol

I have witnessed more profundity watching Spongebob

(not that there is anything inherently wrong with being hokey)

:)

I was always intrigued with the way the lyrics kind of mirrored some of the science stuff going on when they were written.
Einstein predicted black holes existed way back when but the term wasn't coined 'till 1967, the very year Hunter writes Dark Star, no?

Stars -big ones, anyway- implode when they die, morphing into black holes that suck anything and everything into them, even light- which makes them dark.

Where does the stuff go that gets sucked in? Nobody knows, but reason certainly starts to tatter when exploring possible answers to this question. The best current take is they may be much like worm holes in apples, leading to other places in space-time, Black holes are prominently involved with current theorizing about the possibility of time travel.

Searchlights cast for faults in the clouds of delusion 'cause to figure some of this out we gotta forget some of the stuff we think we already know about our universe.

Forgive my babbling please. Just my take anyways. I never read any interview with Hunter where he talked about putting down a copy of Scientific American and quickly scribbling these lyrics but who knows?

not a bad take at all Reade - although I still think they are hokey, I like your slant on the direction the lyrics. I cannot recall ever reading those lyrics in that exact same way, so I like it!! Nice post :)

So generous.
You had no way of knowing a mini-rant like that was headed your way. I was bored at work- what can I say?

While many of their tunes hold up remarkably well lyrically, some unfortunately do not. Like, for me, Terrapin is one gigantic expulsion of overly thought out effluvia. Nice try, but y'all tried WAYYY too hard on that one.

Very odd side not that hit me as I typed this, I just read a guide to writing an effective resume and one of their "handy tips" was that using double spaces after periods was a dead give away as to your age. I always thought it was ending it with "that font tho". That is one of the reasons I have avoided Facebook. Watching the ever-quickening demise of the English language is just too much for me to bear.

I am a huge fan of 70's Yes, so I guess I have no real issue with "hokey" or downright "flaky" lyrics :)

Oh my god! My thoughts exactly my friend. Being a true bibliophile, completely addicted to poetry and "literature," I almost feel like jumping off a bridge watching the "changes" to our language. I realize I am an old fart now, but seriously....
