if you are uploading it you can use an image stack rather than pdf. see: https://help.archive.org/hc/en-us/articles/360001820212-How-to-upload-scanned-images-to-make-a-book

In what way does this result into better PDF's? Is the automated process behind Archive.orgs system doing this then? And the result is a lossless but compact PDF-file I can download afterwards?

yes, the system will create a pdf from your uploaded file stack.
