We consider the possibility that the reactor antineutrino anomaly is due to a miscalculation of one or more of the $^{235}\text{U}$, $^{238}\text{U}$, $^{239}\text{Pu}$, and $^{241}\text{Pu}$ reactor antineutrino fluxes. From the fit of the data we obtain the precise determination $\sigma_{f,235} = ( 6.33 \pm 0.08 ) \times 10^{-43} \, \text{cm}^2 / \text{fission}$ of the $^{235}\text{U}$ cross section per fission, which is more precise than the calculated value and differs from it by...

Recent studies have evidenced that long-baseline (LBL) experiments are sensitive to the extra CP-phases involved with light sterile neutrinos, whose existence is suggested by several anomalous short-baseline (SBL) results. We show that, within the 3+1 scheme, the combination of the existing SBL data with the LBL results coming from the two currently running experiments NO$\nu$A and T2K, enables us to simultaneously constrain two active-sterile mixing angles $\theta_{14}$ and $\theta_{24}$ and...

We investigate which among the reactor antineutrino fluxes from the decays of the fission products of $^{235}\text{U}$, $^{238}\text{U}$, $^{239}\text{Pu}$, and $^{241}\text{Pu}$ may be responsible for the reactor antineutrino anomaly if the anomaly is due to a miscalculation of the antineutrino fluxes. We find that it is very likely that at least the calculation of the $^{235}\text{U}$ flux must be revised. From the fit of the data we obtain the precise determination $\sigma_{f,235} = ( 6.33...

The Short BaseLine (SBL) neutrino oscillation anomalies hint at the presence of a sterile neutrino with a mass of around 1 eV. However, such a neutrino is incompatible with cosmological data, in particular observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. However, this conclusion can change by invoking new physics. One possibility is to introduce a secret interaction in the sterile neutrino sector mediated by a light pseudoscalar. In this pseudoscalar model, CMB data prefer a...

The recent discovery of B-modes in the polarization pattern of the Cosmic Microwave Background by the BICEP2 experiment has important implications for neutrino physics. We revisit cosmological bounds on light sterile neutrinos and show that they are compatible with all current cosmological data provided that the mass is relatively low. Using CMB data, including BICEP-2, we find an upper bound of $m_s < 0.85$ eV ($2\sigma$ Confidence Level). This bound is strengthened to 0.48 eV when HST...

Cosmology and short baseline neutrino oscillation data both hint at the existence of light sterile neutrinos with masses in the 1 eV range. Here we perform a detailed analysis of the sterile neutrino scenario using both cosmological and SBL data. We have additionally considered the possibility that the extra neutrino degrees of freedom are not fully thermalised in the early universe. Even when analyzing only cosmological data we find a preference for the existence of massive sterile neutrinos...

Light sterile neutrinos can be excited by oscillations with active neutrinos in the early universe. Their properties can be constrained by their contribution as extra-radiation, parameterized in terms of the effective number of neutrino species N_ eff, and to the universe energy density today \Omega_\nu h^2. Both these parameters have been measured to quite a good precision by the Planck satellite experiment. We use this result to update the bounds on the parameter space of (3+1) sterile...

There are hints, both from cosmology and from neutrino oscillation experiments, that one or two sterile neutrinos with eV masses are favored. We consider the implications of combining data from short baseline neutrino experiments with cosmological observations. In particular we consider cosmological models where the equation of state of dark energy and the curvature are allowed to vary. We find that the consistency of results from short baseline experiments and cosmology is dependent on the...

Recent results from short--baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy measurements suggest the presence of additional sterile neutrinos. In this paper we properly combine these data sets to derive bounds on the sterile neutrino masses in the 3+1 and 3+2 frameworks, finding a potentially good agreement between the two datasets. However, when galaxy clustering is included in the analysis a tension between the oscillation and cosmological data is clearly...

We investigate the possible effects of short-baseline antinu_e disappearance implied by the reactor antineutrino anomaly on the Double-Chooz determination of theta_{13} through the normalization of the initial antineutrino flux with the Bugey-4 measurement. We show that the effects are negligible and the value of theta_{13} obtained by the Double-Chooz collaboration is accurate only if Delta m^2_{41} is larger than about 3 eV^2. For smaller values of Delta m^2_{41} the short-baseline...

The indications in favor of short-baseline neutrino oscillations, which require the existence of one or more sterile neutrinos, are reviewed. In the framework of 3+1 neutrino mixing, which is the simplest extension of the standard three-neutrino mixing which can partially explain the data, there is a strong tension in the interpretation of the data, mainly due to an incompatibility of the results of appearance and disappearance experiments. In the framework of 3+2 neutrino mixing, CP violation...

We present the results of fits of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in 3+1 and 3+2 neutrino mixing schemes. In spite of the presence of a tension in the interpretation of the data, 3+1 neutrino mixing is attractive for its simplicity and for the natural correspondence of one new entity (a sterile neutrino) with a new effect (short-baseline oscillations). The allowed regions in the oscillation parameter space can be tested in near-future experiments. In the framework of 3+2 neutrino...

The separate fits of MiniBooNE and Gallium data are highly compatible, with close best-fit values of the effective oscillation parameters Delta m^2 and sin^2 2 theta. The combined fit gives Delta m^2 >~ 0.1 eV^2 and 0.11 < sin^2 2 theta < 0.48 at 2 sigma....

In the introductory part of the paper a summary on what we really know about neutrinos is given: we discuss the basics of neutrino mass and mixing as well as the phenomenology of neutrino oscillations. This is important for the following discussion on neutrino electromagnetic properties that starts with a derivation of the neutrino electromagnetic vertex function in the most general form, that follows...

It is shown that the Majorana phases of the neutrino mixing matrix cannot have any effect in neutrino oscillations, contrary to the argument presented in arXiv:0912.5266. It is also shown that in a charged-current weak interaction process it is not possible to create a coherent superposition of different flavor neutrinos which is independent of the associated charged leptons.

The claims that the GSI time anomaly is due to the mixing of neutrinos in the final state of the observed electron-capture decays of hydrogen-like heavy ions are refuted with the help of an analogy with a double-slit experiment. It is a consequence of causality. It is shown that the GSI time anomaly may be caused by quantum beats due to the existence of two coherent energy levels of the decaying ion with an extremely small energy splitting (about $6\times10^{-16} \text{eV}$) and relative...

The standard theory of neutrino oscillations is reviewed, highlighting the main assumptions: the definition of the flavor states, the equal-momentum assumption and the time = distance assumption. It is shown that the standard flavor states are correct approximations of the states that describe neutrinos in oscillation experiments. The equal-momentum assumption is shown to be unnecessary for the derivation of the oscillation probability. The time = distance assumption derives from the...

It is shown that a flavor neutrino state that describes a neutrino produced or detected in a charged-current weak interaction process depends on the process under consideration and is appropriate for the description of neutrino oscillations as well as for the calculation of neutrino production or detection rates. In this review we present the main features of the current status of neutrino physics. After a review of the theory of neutrino mixing and oscillations, we discuss the current status of solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. We show that the current data can be nicely accommodated in the framework of three-neutrino mixing. We discuss also the problem of the determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale through Tritium beta-decay experiments and astrophysical observations,...

We present a derivation of the flavor neutrino states which describe neutrinos produced or detected in charged-current weak-interaction processes, including those operating in neutrino oscillation experiments. We also present a covariant derivation of the probability of neutrino oscillations which is consistent with the fact that flavor is Lorentz-invariant. Finally, we clarify the negative answers to three commonly asked questions: "Do charged leptons oscillate?"; "Is the...

It is shown that it is possible to construct an infinity of Fock spaces of flavor neutrinos depending on arbitrary unphysical mass parameters, in agreement with the theory of Blasone and Vitiello in the version proposed by Fujii, Habe and Yabuki. However, we show that these flavor neutrino Fock spaces are clever mathematical constructs without physical relevance, because the hypothesis that neutrinos produced or detected in charged-current weak interaction processes are described by flavor...

It is shown that a flavor neutrino state that describes a neutrino produced or detected in a charged-current weak interaction process depends on the process under consideration and is appropriate for the description of neutrino oscillations as well as for the calculation of neutrino production or detection rates. Hence, we have a consistent framework for the description of neutrino oscillations and interactions.

We review critically the main assumptions on which the standard theory of neutrino oscillations is based. We show that all assumptions are realistic, except the so-called "equal momentum assumption", which however is irrelevant. We conclude that the standard expression for the probability of neutrino oscillations is robust.

We review critically the main assumptions on which the standard theory of neutrino oscillations is based. We show that all assumptions are realistic, except the so-called "equal momentum assumption", which however is irrelevant. We briefly review the covariant plane-wave derivation of neutrino oscillations and a quantum field theoretical wave packet model of neutrino oscillations. We show that both approaches lead to the standard expression for the oscillation phase. The wave packet...

Gravitational lensing introduces the possibility of multiple (macroscopic) paths from an astrophysical neutrino source to a detector. Such a multiplicity of paths can allow for quantum mechanical interference to take place that is qualitatively different to neutrino oscillations in flat space. After an illustrative example clarifying some under-appreciated subtleties of the phase calculation, we derive the form of the quantum mechanical phase for a neutrino mass eigenstate propagating...
