This study seeks to better understand good and likeable targets through the lifespan using a nationally representative sample. Particularly, we are interested in stability over time, and how being seen accurately and positively may impact one’s social relationships and downstream health and well-being, and how the accuracy of perceptions of social class are related to being perceived positively.

This registration is for new hypotheses and the data analysis plan for 4 existing data sets. The data sets were collected to test the State and Trait Accuracy Model (see Hall, Gunnery, Letzring, Carney, & Colvin, 2017; Letzring & Funder, 2019). Registrations for those studies can be found at https://osf.io/x25kh, https://osf.io/6hvyd, https://osf.io/fek2j, and https://osf.io/ynve2. The registered analyses will examine how characteristics of judge-participants, who observed recorded...

This is the fourth study in a 4-study sequence. This study will examine how the domain of focus (e.g., affective states or personality traits) influences accuracy. The prediction is that judges who focus on affect will achieve higher accuracy for traits than judges who focus on traits. This is consistent with STAM, but counterintuitive because it is natural to think that focusing on traits would result in more accurate trait judgments, and therefore this is a strong test of the State and Trait...

This study will examine how validity of affect cues affects accuracy in judging traits and affect. Congruent vs incongruent affect was determined based on the match between self-reported affect and the average of four coders' perceptions of that individual's affect. Congruent affect meant that the self-reported affect was more in line with the coded affect, while incongruent affect meant that these two things were very different. Congruent affect indicates that the emotion a person is...

Transcripts of the stimulus videos used in the STAM studies were read by judges who then made ratings of personality for the target person in each transcript. Accuracy based on reading transcripts will be compared to accuracy based on observing videos, and stimuli with similar levels of accuracy will be used in the third STAM project study.

This study tests the causal relationship between affect accuracy and trait accuracy by manipulating the validity of affective and trait information given to judges, and then examining how accuracy of judgments on the other domain are affected. A main effect of information validity is predicted, such that accuracy is predicted to be highest in the valid information conditions and lowest in the invalid information conditions, regardless of which domain is judged. More importantly, an interaction...

This is the first study of a 4-study sequence. The goal of the first study is to assess the relationship between accuracy of judging affective states and accuracy of judging personality traits. We predict that these will be positively related to a moderate degree. Participant-judges will observe videotapes of individuals interacting with a research assistant in a lab setting, and then provide judgments of both affect and traits.
