This study seeks to better understand good and likeable targets through the lifespan using a nationally representative sample. Particularly, we are interested in stability over time, and how being seen accurately and positively may impact one’s social relationships and downstream health and well-being, and how the accuracy of perceptions of social class are related to being perceived positively.

This is the first study of a 4-study sequence. The goal of the first study is to assess the relationship between accuracy of judging affective states and accuracy of judging personality traits. We predict that these will be positively related to a moderate degree. Participant-judges will observe videotapes of individuals interacting with a research assistant in a lab setting, and then provide judgments of both affect and traits.

Transcripts of the stimulus videos used in the STAM studies were read by judges who then made ratings of personality for the target person in each transcript. Accuracy based on reading transcripts will be compared to accuracy based on observing videos, and stimuli with similar levels of accuracy will be used in the third STAM project study.
