This is the first study of a 4-study sequence. The goal of the first study is to assess the relationship between accuracy of judging affective states and accuracy of judging personality traits. We predict that these will be positively related to a moderate degree. Participant-judges will observe videotapes of individuals interacting with a research assistant in a lab setting, and then provide judgments of both affect and traits.

This study tests the causal relationship between affect accuracy and trait accuracy by manipulating the validity of affective and trait information given to judges, and then examining how accuracy of judgments on the other domain are affected. A main effect of information validity is predicted, such that accuracy is predicted to be highest in the valid information conditions and lowest in the invalid information conditions, regardless of which domain is judged.
