We define the open string version of the nonlinear sigma model on doubled geometry introduced by Hull and Reid-Edwards, and derive its boundary conditions. These conditions include the restriction of D-branes to maximally isotropic submanifolds as well as a compatibility condition with the Lie algebra structure on the doubled space. We demonstrate a systematic method to derive and classify D-branes from the boundary conditions, in terms of embeddings both in the doubled geometry and in the...

We propose a class of N=2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on the noncompact Ricci-flat Kahler manifolds, interpreted as the complex line bundles over the hermitian symmetric spaces. Kahler potentials and Ricci-flat metrics for these manifolds with isometries are explicitly constructed by using the techniques of supersymmetric gauge theories. Each of the metrics contains a resolution parameter which controls the size of these base manifolds, and the conical singularity appears when the...

We construct the non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds interpreted as the complex line bundles over the Hermitian symmetric spaces. These manifolds are the various generalizations of the complex line bundle over CP^{N-1}. Imposing an F-term constraint on the line bundle over CP^{N-1}, we obtain the line bundle over the complex quadric surface Q^{N-2}. On the other hand, when we promote the U(1) gauge symmetry in CP^{N-1} to the non-abelian gauge group U(M), the line bundle over the Grassmann...

We investigate non-perturbative structures of the two-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model on the quadric surface Q^{n-2}(C) = SO(n)/SO(n-2)xU(1), which is a Hermitian symmetric space, and therefore Kahler, by using the auxiliary field and large-n methods. This model contains two kinds of non-perturbatively stable vacua; one of them is the same vacuum as that of supersymmetric CP^{n-1} model, and the other is a new kind of vacuum, which has not yet been known to exist in...

We present an extension of the Courant bracket to the ones for Dp-branes by analyzing Hamiltonians and local superalgebras. Contrast to the basis of the bracket for a fundamental string which consists of the momentum and the winding modes, the ones for Dp-branes contain higher rank R-R coupling tensors. We show that the R-R gauge transformation rules are obtained by these Courant brackets for Dp-branes where the Dirac-Born-Infeld gauge field and the "two-vierbein field" play an...

We study two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ gauge theory and its dualized system in terms of complex (linear) superfields and their alternatives. Although this technique itself is not new, we can obtain a new model, the so-called "semi-doubled" GLSM. Similar to doubled sigma model, this involves both the original and dual degrees of freedom simultaneously, whilst the latter only contribute to the system via topological interactions. Applying this to the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ GLSM for...

We consider flux vacua attractor equations in type IIA string theory compactified on generalized geometries with orientifold projections. The four-dimensional N=1 superpotential in this compactification can be written as the sum of the Ramond-Ramond superpotential and a term described by (non)geometric flux charges. We exhibit a simple model in which supersymmetric AdS and Minkowski solutions are classified by means of discriminants of the two superpotentials. We further study various...

We study a local description of composite five-branes of codimension two. The formulation is constructed by virtue of $SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z)}$ monodromy associated with two-torus. Applying conjugate monodromy transformations to the complex structures of the two-torus, we obtain a field configuration of a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane. This is a composite state of $p$ defect NS5-branes and $q$ exotic $5^2_2$-branes. We also obtain a new example of hyper-K\"{a}hler geometry....

We find a new attractor equation which is not reduced to the one in the asymptotically flat spacetime. Focusing on so-called the T^3-model with a single neutral vector multiplet, we obtain non-supersymmetric extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole solutions with regular event horizon in the D0-D4 and the D2-D6 charge configurations. We study one class of linear sigma models and their T-dualized theories for noncompact Calabi-Yau manifolds. In the low energy limit, we find that this system has various massless effective theories with orbifolding symmetries. This phenomenon is new and there are no analogous structures in the models for compact Calabi-Yau manifolds and for line bundles on the simple toric varieties.

One has believed that low energy effective theories of the Higgs branch of gauged linear sigma models correspond to supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models, which have been already investigated by many works. In this paper we discuss a explicit derivation of supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models from gauged linear sigma models. In this process we construct Kahler potentials of some two-dimensional toric varieties explicitly. Thus we will be able to study some algebraic varieties in the language...

We study a supergauge transformation of a complex superfield which generates a chiral superfield in two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ theory. This complex superfield is referred to as the prepotential of the chiral superfield. Since there exist redundant component fields in the prepotential, we remove some of them by a gauge-fixing condition. This situation is parallel to that of a vector superfield. In order to obtain a suitable configuration of the GLSM for the exotic five-brane which gives...

We study the supersymmetry projection rules on exotic branes in type II string theories and M-theory. They justify the validity of the exotic duality between standard branes and exotic branes of codimension two. By virtue of the supersymmetry projection rules on various branes, we can consider a system that involves multiple non-parallel exotic branes in the nongeometric background.

We study gauged linear sigma models for noncompact Calabi-Yau manifolds described as a line bundle on a hypersurface in a projective space. This gauge theory has a unique phase if the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter is positive, while there exist two distinct phases if the parameter is negative. We find four massless effective theories in the infrared limit, which are related to each other under the Calabi-Yau/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence and the topology change. We study static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity with one vector multiplet and one hyper-tensor multiplet. This is derived from massive type IIA theory compactified on the nearly-Kahler coset space G2/SU(3). It is well-known that the Romans' mass parameter yields the Stuckelberg-type deformation of the gauge field strengths in the four-dimensional system. This deformation requires that all the (covariant) derivatives of the scalar fields...

We discuss higher derivative extensions of chiral and vector superfields, and write down generic forms of K\"ahler potential and superpotential up to quadratic order. We derive the condition in which an auxiliary field remains non-dynamical, and the dynamical scalars and fermions are free from the ghost degrees of freedom. We also investigate the nonlocal effects on the supersymmetry breaking and find that...

We construct yet another ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the $A_N$-type ALE space. In our construction the toric data of the ALE space are manifest. Due to the $SU(2)_R$ symmetry, the F-term is automatically determined. The toric data, which govern the K\"{a}hler structures of the ALE space, are embedded into $U(1)$ charges of charged hypermultiplets. The F-term is also inevitable to determine the complex structures of the ALE space. In the IR limit, we obtain the...

We furthermore classify orientifolds on non-factorizable Z_N x Z_M orbifolds, and construct new supersymmetric Type IIA orientifold models on them.

In heterotic flux compactification with supersymmetry, three different connections with torsion appear naturally, all in the form $\omega+a H$. Supersymmetry condition carries $a=-1$, the Dirac operator has $a=-1/3$, and higher order term in the effective action involves $a=1$. With a view toward the gauge sector, we explore the geometry with such torsions. After reviewing the supersymmetry constraints and finding a relation between the scalar curvature and the flux, we derive the squared form...

We show that there exist two 27 and one 27bar of E6, net one chiral supermultiplet as zero modes localized on the intersecting 5-branes in the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory. A heterotic background is constructed by the standard embedding in the smeared solution, and the Dirac equation is solved explicitly on this background. It provides, after a compactification of some of the transverse dimensions, a Randall-Sundrum II like brane-world set-up in heterotic string theory.
