The ac Stark shift of hyperfine levels of neutral atoms can be calculated using the third order perturbation theory(TOPT), where the third order corrections are quadratic in the atom-photon interaction and linear in the hyperfine interaction. In this paper, we use Green's function to derive the $E^{[2+\epsilon]}$ method which can give close values to those of TOPT for the differential light shift between two hyperfine levels. It comes with a simple form and easy incorporation of theoretical and...

Both increasing frequency of drought and drought duration are expected for many terrestrial ecosystems under on-going climate change. However, our understanding of the drought effect on soil respiration (R s ), which comprises the second largest carbon (C) flux of the global C cycle, remains limited. To explore the effects of reduced precipitation on R s and its components, we conducted an experiment of throughfall rainfall exclusion during two consecutive growing seasons in a subtropical...

We study the Jacobi unitary ensemble perturbed by an algebraic singularity at $t>1$. For fixed $t$, this is the modified Jacobi ensemble studied by Kuijlaars {\it{et al.}} The main focus here, however, is the case when the algebraic singularity approaches the hard edge, namely $t\to 1^+$. In the double scaling limit case when $t- 1$ is of the order of magnitude of $1/n^2$, $n$ being the size of the matrix, the eigenvalue correlation kernel is shown to have a new limiting kernel at the hard...

We study the $B_s \to \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $B_d \to K^+ K^-$ decays in the standard model and the family non-universal $Z^\prime$ model. Since none of the quarks in final states is the same as the initial quark, these decay modes can occur only via power-suppressed annihilation diagrams. Despite the consistence of the standard model prediction with the available data, there is a surviving room for a light $Z^\prime$ boson. Taking into account the $Z^\prime$ contribution, we find theoretical results...

Overlaying commensurate optical lattices with various configurations called superlattices can lead to exotic lattice topologies and, in turn, a discovery of novel physics. In this study, by overlapping the maxima of lattices, a new isolated structure is created, while the interference of minima can generate various "sublattice" patterns. Three different kinds of primitive lattices are used to demonstrate isolated square, triangular, and hexagonal "sublattice" structures in a...

We show that the well-known Hastings-McLeod solution to the second Painlev\'{e} equation is pole-free in the region $\arg x \in [-\frac{\pi}{3},\frac{\pi}{3}]\cup [\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{ 4 \pi}{3}]$, which proves an important special case of a general conjecture concerning pole distributions of Painlev\'{e} transcedents proposed by Novokshenov. Our strategy is to construct explicit quasi-solutions approximating the Hastings-McLeod solution in different regions of the complex plane, and estimate...

Magic wavelengths for laser trapping of boson isotopes of alkaline-earth Sr, Ca and Mg atoms are investigated while considering terahertz clock transitions between the $^{3}P_{0}, ^{3}P_{1}, ^{3}P_{2}$ metastable triplet states. Our calculation shows that magic wavelengths of trapping laser do exist. This result is important because those metastable states have already been used to realize accurate clocks in the terahertz frequency domain. Detailed discussions for magic wavelength for terahertz...

We study the Hankel determinants associated with the weight $$w(x;t)=(1-x^2)^{\beta}(t^2-x^2)^\alpha h(x),~x\in(-1,1),$$ where $\beta>-1$, $\alpha+\beta>-1$, $t>1$, $h(x)$ is analytic in a domain containing $[-1,1]$ and $h(x)>0$ for $x\in[-1,1]$. In this paper, based on the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent analysis, we study the double scaling limit of the Hankel determinants as $n\to \infty$ and $t\to 1$. We obtain the asymptotic approximations of the Hankel determinants,...

In this paper, we consider the Hankel determinants associated with the singularly perturbed Laguerre weight $w(x)=x^\alpha e^{-x-t/x}$, $x\in (0, \infty)$, $t>0$ and $\alpha>0$. When the matrix size $n\to\infty$, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Hankel determinants, valid uniformly for $t\in (0, d]$, $d>0$ fixed. A particular Painlev\'{e} III transcendent is involved in the approximation, as well as in the large-$n$ asymptotics of the leading coefficients and recurrence...

Multimode interference couplers are a fundamental building block in many integrated photonic systems, ranging from high-speed coherent receivers to quantum splitters. However, their basic structure has remained fundamentally unchanged for almost four decades, limiting their size and operation bandwidth. Using sub-wavelength metamaterials, photonic devices with break-through size and performance have been recently reported. Leveraging the inherent anisotropy of these structures, here we derive a...

In this paper, we develop the Riemann-Hilbert method to study the asymptotics of discrete orthogonal polynomials on infinite nodes with an accumulation point. To illustrate our method, we consider the Tricomi-Carlitz polynomials $f_n^{(\alpha)}(z)$ where $\alpha$ is a positive parameter. Uniform Plancherel-Rotach type asymptotic formulas are obtained in the entire complex plane including a neighborhood of the origin, and our results agree with the ones obtained earlier in [{\it SIAM...

We make an evaluation of the lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays $\tau \to \ell (V^0, P^0)$, where $\ell=e$ or $\mu$ and $V^0(P^0)$ is a neutral vector (pseudo-scalar) meson, in the context of unparticle physics. The constraints are investigated systematically on the related coupling parameters from all the available experimental data, and the parameter values are specified appropriately. The results show that whereas over the whole parameter space allowed by experiments all the $\tau \to \ell...

We study the uniform asymptotics for the orthogonal polynomials with respect to weights composed of both absolutely continuous measure and discrete measure, by taking a special class of the sieved Pollazek Polynomials as an example. The Plancherel-Rotach type asymptotics of the sieved Pollazek Polynomials are obtained in the whole complex plane. The Riemann-Hilbert method is applied to derive the results. A main feature of the treatment is the appearance of a new band consisting of two adjacent...
