We consider a 9-PDE (1-space and 1-time) model of plane Couette flow in which the degrees of freedom are severely restricted in the streamwise and cross-stream directions to study spanwise localisation in detail. Of the many steady Eckhaus (spanwise modulational) instabilities identified of global steady states, none lead to a localized state. Localized periodic solutions were found instead which arise in saddle node bifurcations in the Reynolds number. These solutions appear global (domain...

We study the interplay between the Kitaev and Ising interactions on both ladder and two dimensional lattices. We show that the ground state of the Kitaev ladder is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, which is protected by a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. It is confirmed by the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum and non-trivial phase factors (inequivalent projective representations of the symmetries), which are obtained within infinite matrix-product representation...

The second-order spatial and temporal interference patterns with two independent single-mode He-Ne lasers are observed in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. Two-photon interference in Feynman's path integral theory is employed to interpret the experimental results. The conditions to observe the second-order interference pattern with two independent single-mode continuous wave lasers are discussed. It is concluded that two-photon interference exists for not only identical photons, but also photons...

We propose a new Bayesian tracking and parameter learning algorithm for non-linear non-Gaussian multiple target tracking (MTT) models. We design a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to sample from the posterior distribution of the target states, birth and death times, and association of observations to targets, which constitutes the solution to the tracking problem, as well as the model parameters. In the numerical section, we present performance comparisons with several competing...

Hamiltonian and eigenstate problem is formulated for a bilayer graphene in terms of Clifford's geometric algebra \textit{Cl}$_{3,1}$. It is shown that such approach allows to perform analytical calculations in a simple way if geometrical algebra rotors are used. The measured quantities are express through spectrum and rotation half-angle of the pseudospin that appears in geometric algebra rotors. Properties of free charge carriers -- pseudospin, velocity and Berry phase -- in a bilayer graphene...

The ability to control the magnetization switching in nanoscale devices is a crucial step for the development of fast and reliable techniques to store and process information. Here we show that the switching dynamics can be controlled efficiently using a microwave field with slowly varying frequency (autoresonance). This technique allowed us to reduce the applied field by more than $30%$ compared to competing approaches, with no need to fine-tune the field parameters. For a linear chain of...

We propose an identification of the free parameter in the model of nonlinear electrodynamics proposed in P. Gaete and J. Helayel-Neto, Eur. Phys. J. C 74, 2816 (2014) by equating the second term in the power expansion of its Lagrangian with that in the expansion of the Heiseberg-Euler Lagrangian. The resulting value of the field-energy of a point-like charge makes 0.988 of the electron mass, if the charge is that of the electron.

Fluorescence microscopy is indispensable in nanoscience and biological sciences. The versatility of labeling target structures with fluorescent dyes permits to visualize structure and function at a subcellular resolution with a wide field of view. Due to the diffraction limit, conventional optical microscopes are limited to resolving structures larger than 200 nm. The resolution can be enhanced by near-field and far-field super-resolution microscopy methods. Near-field methods typically have a...

We consider an optimal control problem subject to the thin-film equation which is deduced from the Navier--Stokes equation. The PDE constraint lacks well-posedness for general right-hand sides due to possible degeneracies; state constraints are used to circumvent this problematic issue and to ensure well-posedness, and the rigorous derivation of necessary optimality conditions for the optimal control problem is performed. A multi-parameter regularization is considered which addresses both, the...

We study the mathematical properties of a kinetic equation which describes the long time behaviour of solutions to the weak turbulence equation associated to the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. In particular, we give a precise definition of weak solutions and prove global existence of solutions for all initial data with finite mass. We also prove that any nontrivial initial datum yields the instantaneous onset of a condensate, i.e. a Dirac mass at the origin for any positive time....

The description of activated relaxation of glassy systems in the multidimensional configurational space is a long-standing open problem. We develop a phenomenological description of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a model with a rough potential energy landscape and we analyse it both numerically and analytically. The model provides an example of dynamics where typical relaxation channels go over finite potential energy barriers despite the presence of less-energy-demanding escaping paths in...

This paper investigates the $k$-mixing property of a multidimensional cellular automaton. Suppose $F$ is a cellular automaton with the local rule $f$ defined on a $d$-dimensional convex hull $\mathcal{C}$ which is generated by an apex set $C$. Then $F$ is $k$-mixing with respect to the uniform Bernoulli measure for all positive integer $k$ if $f$ is a permutation at some apex in $C$. An algorithm called the \emph{Mixing Algorithm} is proposed to verify if a local rule $f$ is permutive at some...

We theoretically study magnetic properties of two-component cold fermions in half-filled multilayer Lieb optical lattices, i.e., two, three, and several layers, using the dynamical mean-field theory. We clarify that the magnetic properties of this system become quite different depending on whether the number of layers is odd or even. In odd-number-th layers in an odd-number-layer system, finite magnetization emerges even with an infinitesimal interaction. This is a striking feature of the...

In this paper, time-dependent dynamical systems given by sequences of maps are studied. For systems built from expanding C^2-maps on a compact Riemannian manifold M with uniform bounds on expansion factors and derivatives, we provide formulas for the metric and topological entropy. If we only assume that the maps are C^1, but act in the same way on the fundamental group of M, we can show the existence of an equi-conjugacy to an autonomous system, implying a full variational principle for the...

The method performs maximally powerful frequentist searches and produces confidence limits on particle...

Minimization problems with respect to a one-parameter family of generalized relative entropies are studied. These relative entropies, which we term relative $\alpha$-entropies (denoted $\mathscr{I}_{\alpha}$), arise as redundancies under mismatched compression when cumulants of compressed lengths are considered instead of expected compressed lengths. These parametric relative entropies are a generalization of the usual relative entropy (Kullback-Leibler divergence). Just like relative entropy,...

We study ground states of Ising models with random ferromagnetic couplings, proving the triviality of all zero-temperature metastates. This unexpected result sheds a new light on the properties of these systems, putting strong restrictions on their possible ground state structure. Open problems related to existence of interface-supporting ground states are stated and an interpretation of the main result in terms of first-passage and random surface models in a random environment is presented.

We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with competing interactions. We computed the Gr\"uneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin chain in the thermodynamical limit. This is obtained by means of the solution of a set of non-linear integral equations, which describes the thermodynamics of the model. We also provide results for the entropy $S$ and the isentropes in the $(H,T)$ plane.

Let $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of transitive infinite connected graphs with $\sup\limits_{n\geq 1} p_c(G_n) < 1,$ where each $p_c(G_n)$ is bond percolation critical probability on $G_n.$ Schramm (2008) conjectured that if $G_n$ converges locally to a transitive infinite connected graph $G,$ then $p_c(G_n) \rightarrow p_c(G)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty.$ We prove the conjecture when $G$ satisfies two rough uniformities, and $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is uniformly nonamenable.
