Satisfactory progress has been made with the continuing studies of the effect of a thin drift layer on the stability and shape of capillary gravity waves. The problem about the counting for the integro-differential equation formulation of the shape of finite amplitude waves of permanent form has been resolved. The equations now seem to describe a well-posed problem, and the task now is to calculate solutions for problems of physical relevance. The calculation of stability for smooth profiles...

The first estimate of the universal form of the atmospheric temperature spectrum for locally stationary conditions was obtained with a statistical accuracy exceeding 5%. The universal form of the temperature spectrum permitted the accurate estimation of the statistics of the locally- stationary inner scale, structure constant, energy dissipation rate, and rate of dissipation of temperature variance. All these parameters have a log-normal distribution. The accuracy of the locally-stationary...

The primary goal of the Avalon Project is to create a set of linguistic constructs designed to give programmers explicit control over transaction-based processing of atomic objects for fault-tolerant applications. These constructs have been implemented as extensions to C++ and Common Lisp. The constructs include new encapsulation and abstraction mechanisms, as well as support for concurrency and recovery. The decision to extend an existing language rather than to invent a new one was based on...

Our project focuses on a single unit system which is subject to random failure. The age of the system in service is maintained as a control variable. Upon failure, an age-dependent maintenance action specifying the degree of repair is taken by a controller. By employing analytical tools and numerical procedures, we investigate and characterize the structures of the optimal repair policy under a discounted cost optimality criterion. Special analytical and numerical effort is directed throughout...

The main thrust of our research has been the investigation of various aspects of the structure and dynamics of cluster growth processes. We have also used the concepts of cluster growth to investigate a number of other phenomena, including studies of the morphology of rough surfaces and the phenomenon of pattern formation. Efforts aimed at improving the electrical performance of this wire are well underway. We propose a comprehensive metrics validation methodology that has six validation criteria, each of which supports certain quality functions. New criteria are defined and illustrated, including consistency, discriminative power, tracking and repeatability. We show that non-parametric statistical methods play an important role in evaluating metrics against the validity criteria. A detailed example of the application of methodology is presented.

Electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation is the transmission of an EM wave between a transmitter and a receiver. If a particular point on the wave front is followed over time, the collection of point positions would define a ray. The ray would coincide with a line from the transmitter to the receiver. The purpose of this raytrace technique is to describe an EM wave's path in terms of rays, as the wave propagates through a laterally heterogeneous medium where the index of refraction is allowed to...

The fractal properties of percolation clusters in the long range bond or meanfield limit were investigated via Monte Carlo simulations and by the use of scaling arguments. The research vehicle for this contract is the largest possible computer than can be conceived for the mid to late 1990's. We call this machine an 'American Resource Computer' or 'ARC'. We imagine this machine to occupy several floors of a building. The nation could probably only afford one or two ARC's. The machine will be used to solve large-scale scientific problems having both military and civilian applications. This investigation addresses the hardware technology, software techniques,...

While NF X3 delta - was easily detected by laser induced fluorescence on the NF b(1) delta - X3 delta - transition following 249 nm NF2 photolysis, it was no...
