We study the phase sensitivity of SU(2) and SU(1,1) interferometers fed by two-mode field states which are intelligent states for Hermitian generators of the SU(2) and SU(1,1) groups, respectively. Intelligent states minimize uncertainty relations and this makes possible an essential reduction of the quantum noise in interferometers. Exact closed expressions for the minimum detectable phase shift are obtained in terms of the Jacobi polynomials. These expressions are compared with results for...

Mo/Si and C/Co multilayers for soft x-ray optics were designed for spectral regions of interest in possible applications. Fabrication was effected by Pulsed Laser Deposition using Nd:YAG (355 nm) or excimer (248 nm) lasers in order to evaluate the suitability of this technique. Results for Mo/Si structures were not considered satisfactory due mainly to problems with particulate production and target surface modification during Si ablation. These problems may be alleviated by a two-wavelength...

We develop a general expression for the gamma-gamma absorption coefficient for gamma-rays propagating in an arbitrary direction at an arbitrary point in space above an X-ray emitting accretion disk. The X-ray intensity is assumed to vary as a power law in energy and radius between the outer disk radius and the inner radius, which is the radius of marginal stability for a Schwarzschild black hole. We use our result for the absorption coefficient to calculate the gamma-gamma optical depth for...

A significant fraction of the stellar population in the cusp around central black holes of galaxies consists of compact remnants of evolved stars, such as white dwarfs, neutron stars and stellar mass black holes. We estimate the rate of capture of compact objects by massive central black holes, assuming most spiral galaxies have a central black hole of modest mass ($\sim 10^6 \msun$), and a cuspy spheroid. It is likely that the total capture rate is dominated by nucleated spirals. We estimate...

We review the numerical analysis' understanding of Krylov subspace methods for solving (non-hermitian) systems of equations and discuss its implications for lattice gauge theory computations using the example of the Wilson fermion matrix. Our thesis is that mature methods like QMR, BiCGStab or restarted GMRES are close to optimal for the Wilson fermion matrix. Consequently, preconditioning appears to be the crucial issue for further improvements.

A Thomas-Fermi-Weizsaecker type theory is constructed, by means of which we are able to give a relatively simple proof of the stability of relativistic matter. Our procedure has the advantage over previous ones in that the critical value of the fine structure constant, alpha, is raised to 0.77 (recall that the critical value is known to be less than 2.72). When alpha =1/137, the largest nuclear charge is 59 (compared to the known optimum value 87). Apart from this, our method is simple, for it...

We present an analysis of the production and two-photon decay of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A rather general model is considered, without supergravity constraints. All parameters of the model are taken into account, we especially study the dependence of the cross section on the squark masses, on the bilinear parameter $\mu$ and the trilinear supersymmetry breaking parameter $A$. Non-zero values of...

Let $V$ be a simple vertex operator algebra which admits the continuous, faithful action of a compact Lie group $G$ of automorphisms. We establish a Schur-Weyl type duality between the unitary, irreducible modules for $G$ and the irreducible modules for $V^G$ which are contained in $V$ where $V^G$ is the space of $G$-invariants of $V.$ We also prove a concomitant Galois correspondence between vertex operator subalgebras of $V$ which contain $V^G$ and closed Lie subgroups of $G$ in the case that...

We present a procedure to calculate 1-loop graphs in the soliton sector of chiral Lagrangians and use it to calculate quantum corrections to certain baryon observables in Skyrme-type models. Results generally show an improvement over the values obtained in tree approximation except for the case of the axial coupling g_A.

A flavor-universal extension of the strong interactions was recently proposed in response to the apparent excess of high-$E_T$ jets in the inclusive jet spectrum measured at the Tevatron. This paper studies the color octet of massive gauge bosons (`colorons') that is present in the low-energy spectrum of the model's Higgs phase. Constraints from searches for new particles decaying to dijets and from measurements of the weak-interaction $\rho$ parameter imply that the colorons must have masses...

For the first time, we construct a catalog of compact groups selected from a complete, magnitude-limited redshift survey. We select groups with $N \geq 3$ members based on projected separation and association in redshift space alone. We evaluate the characteristics of the Redshift Survey Compact Groups (RSCG's). Their physical properties (membership frequency, velocity dispersion, density) are similar to those of the Hickson [ApJ, 255, 382 (1982)] Compact Groups. Hickson's isolation criterion...

The bicovariant differential calculi on quantum groups of Woronowicz have the drawback that their dimensions do not agree with that of the corresponding classical calculus. In this paper we discuss the first-order differential calculus which arises from a simple quantum Lie algebra. This calculus has the correct dimension and is shown to be bicovariant and complete. But it does not satisfy the Leibniz rule. For sl_n this approach leads to a differential calculus which satisfies a simple...

Recent discussion of the effects of finite source size on high magnification microlensing events due to MACHOs motivates a study into the feasibility of observing such effects and extracting the source radius. Simulated observations are generated by adding Gaussian error to points sampled on theoretical microlensing light curves for a limb darkened, extended source. These simulated data sets are fitted in an attempt to see how well the fits extract the radius of the source. The source size can...

The tensor charges of the nucleon are calculated in the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark soliton model. The rotational $1/N_c$ and strange quark mass corrections are taken into account up to linear order. We obtain the following numerical values of the tensor charges: $\delta u=1.12$, $\delta d=-0.42$, and $\delta s=-0.008$. In contrast to the axial charges, the tensor charges in our model are closer to those of the nonrelativistic quark model, in particular, the net number of the...

We show that the time evolution of the wave function of a quantum mechanical many particle system can be implemented very efficiently on a quantum computer. The computational cost of such a simulation is comparable to the cost of a conventional simulation of the corresponding classical system. We then sketch how results of interest, like the energy spectrum of a system, can be obtained. We also indicate that ultimately the simulation of quantum field theory might be possible on large quantum...

An updated fit to the precision electroweak data and to the direct measurement of the top quark mass $m_t$ provides significant constraints on $m_t$ and on the Higgs boson mass $M_H$: $m_t/\text{GeV}=172\pm 6$ and $\log_{10}(M_H/\text{GeV})=2.16\pm 0.33$, with an error correlation $\rho=0.5$. We integrate the $(M_H, m_t)$ probability distribution found in this analysis over various zones of the $(M_H, m_t)$ plane defined by one-sided experimental and theoretical bounds on the Higgs boson mass,...
