This study was conducted to: (1) determine if the intercession calendar, an alternative calendar that reduces the total school year for students who do not need remediation, positively impacts overall student achievement; (2) to assess the explanatory ability of the intercession model in accounting for student academic achievement variability; and (3) to determine the variables which differentiate among the treatment group using discriminate analysis. The intercession calendar was not a...

This report discusses the outcomes of a study that investigated the relationship between student scores on the five sub-scales of the School Attitude Assessment Survey-Revised (SAAS-R) and the academic achievement of known groups of gifted achievers and gifted underachievers. The study examined whether gifted achievers and gifted underachievers differ in their attitudes toward school, attitudes toward teachers, goal-valuation, motivation, and general academic self-perceptions. An additional...

This doctoral study examined the literacy practices of two rural adolescents as they crossed between the social contexts of their rural community, Winnona Hill, and higher education. Data collected primarily through semi-structured e-mail interviews over a 4-year period indicated that both informants used multiple literacies and a range of language practices to become "literate enough" to gain access to college as well as to cross into life roles, careers, and possibilities beyond the...

Junior officers in the U.S. military have a certain fascination with CNN. Once news of a U.S. military action breaks, these officers typically gather around television sets in their wardrooms, interested in seeing the results of their, or their fellow service members, handiwork, and, once the dust has settled, how it is perceived around the world. On January 16, 1991, and December 16, 1998, they were impressed with the accuracy and lethality of precision guided munitions. On both times, those...

It is conjectured that in the origin of space-time there lies a symplectic rather than metric structure. The complex symplectic symmetry Sp(2l,C), l\ge1 instead of the pseudo-orthogonal one SO(1,d-1), d\ge4 is proposed as the space-time local structure group. A discrete sequence of the metric space-times of the fixed dimensionalities d=(2l)^2 and signatures, with l(2l-1) time-like and l(2l+1) space-like directions, defined over the set of the Hermitian second-rank spin-tensors is considered as...

By variational Monte-Carlo method developed Ceperley et al. for the simulation of fermi systems in macroscopic confining potential well we simulate various spin ground states of the coulomb clusters with 2,3 and 4 particles in a broad two-dimensional (2D) parabolic well. In this method quantum state numbers determining the variational wave function are not the numbers of well quantum states but numbers of the equilibrium spatial positions of particles that give a minimum of the system potential...

The dynamical generalization of the classical Yang-Baxter equation that governs the possible Poisson structures on the space of chiral WZNW fields with generic monodromy is reviewed. It is explained that for particular choices of the chiral WZNW Poisson brackets this equation reduces to the CDYB equation recently studied by Etingof--Varchenko and others. Interesting dynamical r-matrices are obtained for generic monodromy as well as by imposing Dirac constraints on the monodromy.

We prove a new lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact Riemannian spin manifold by refined Weitzenb\"ock techniques. It applies to manifolds with harmonic curvature tensor and depends on the Ricci tensor. Examples show how it behaves compared to other known bounds.

We describe a new and consistent perturbation theory for solid-state quantum computation with many qubits. The errors in the implementation of simple quantum logic operations caused by non-resonant transitions are estimated. We verify our perturbation approach using exact numerical solution for relatively small (L=10) number of qubits. A preferred range of parameters is found in which the errors in processing quantum information are small. Our results are needed for experimental testing of...

Using data from different spacecraft and some powerful computer technology, visualizers at the Goddard Space Flight Center present you with a collection of American cities in a way you have never seen them before. Starting with our camera high above the Earth, we rush in towards the surface at what would be an impossible speed for any known vehicle. Passing though layers of atmosphere, the colors of our destinations shimmer with their own unique characteristics, and suddenly we find ourselves...

In this article kinetic Monte Carlo simulations for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser depositon (PLD) are compared. It will be shown that an optimal pattern conservation during MBE is achieved for a specific ratio of diffusion to deposition rate. Further on pulsed laser deposition is presented as an alternative way to control layer by layer growth. First results concerning the island density in the submonolayer regime are shown.

A general framework for investigating topological actions of $Z^d$ on compact metric spaces was proposed by Boyle and Lind in terms of expansive behavior along lower-dimensional subspaces of $R^d$. Here we completely describe this expansive behavior for the class of algebraic $Z^d$-actions given by commuting automorphisms of compact abelian groups. The description uses the logarithmic image of an algebraic variety together with a directional version of Noetherian modules over the ring of...

We present the two-loop virtual QCD corrections to the scattering of massless distinct quarks in conventional dimensional regularisation. The structure of the infrared divergences agrees with that predicted by Catani while expressions for the finite remainder are given for each of the s-, t- and u-channels in terms of polylogarithms. The results presented here form a vital part of the next-to-next-to-leading order contribution to inclusive jet production in hadron colliders and will play a...

A new physical origin for electroweak symmetry breaking is proposed, involving compact spatial dimensions of scale 1/R \approx 1 TeV. The higher dimensional theory is supersymmetric, and hence requires the top-quark Yukawa coupling to be localized on some ``Yukawa brane'' in the bulk. The short distance divergence in the Higgs-boson mass is regulated because supersymmetry is unbroken in the vicinity of this Yukawa brane. A finite, negative Higgs mass-squared is generated radiatively by the...
