Syenite, Magnet Cove, Arkansas Description: Syenite is a plutonic igneous rock related to granite but containing only very minor amounts of quartz. This sample of syenite is typical: dominated by whitish K-feldspar. The dark mineral is hornblende. Quartz and magnetite are also present but are difficult to identify in hand specimen. We derive a new class of time-dependent solutions for the Randall-Sundrum model by patching together isometries broken by the brane. Solutions generated by generalized boosts along the fifth dimension are associated with localized gravity and lead to an effective Friedman equation on the brane with a scale factor exhibiting power law or exponential behaviour. The effective energy-density on the brane depends linearly on the brane tension.

The collision of a plane parallel shock wave with a plane parallel cloud of uniform density is analysed for the case in which magnetic fields and radiative losses are not considered. General analytic solutions are discussed for the case in which the density of the cloud is greater than that of the surrounding environment. This problem generalises one of the classical problems in gas dynamics: the collision between a shock wave and a solid wall.
