Tillite from the South Brooks Range, Alaska Description: This is a tillite - a conglomerate formed by lithification (compaction and cementation) of glacial till (unsorted glacial sedimentary deposits). The white veins formed later when mineral rich waters flowed through cracks. Almost everything in this sample (the veins, the large pebbles, and the fine grained material) is quartz or some other form of silica. The sample is 25 cm in longest dimension. Location: USA ▹ Alaska. South Brooks...

Detection and identification of military and civilian targets from airborne platforms using hyperspectral sensors is of great interest. Relative to multispectral sensing, hyperspectral sensing can increase the detectability of pixel and subpixel size targets by exploiting finer detail in the spectral signatures of targets and natural backgrounds. A multitude of adaptive detection algorithms for resolved and subpixel targets, with known or unknown spectral characterization, in a background with...

Prehnite Description: Prehnite, Ca 2 Al 2 Si 3 O 1 0(OH) 2 , is a green to grayish-white or colorless orthorhombic mineral occurring as granular masses and crystal aggregates, having a specific gravity of 2.90 to 2.95 and a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Typical prehnite forms rather thick crusts with a rough or crystaline texture. It is found in cavities in basic igneous rocks and with hydrothermally altered rocks. Prehnite was named after the Dutch Colonel, H. Von Prehn (1733-1785)....

Damage to or destruction of the nation's water supply and water quality infrastructure by terrorist attack could disrupt the delivery of vital human services in this country, threatening public health and the environment, or possibly causing loss of life. Interest in such problems has increased since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Across the country, water infrastructure systems extend over vast areas, and ownership and operational responsibility are both public and private, but are...

We report the observation of the decay mode $B^{\pm}\to p \bar{p} K^{\pm}$ based on an analysis of 29.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. This is the first example of a $b\to s$ transition with baryons in the final state. The $p \bar{p}$ mass spectrum in this decay is inconsistent with phase space and is peaked at low mass. The branching fraction for this decay is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^{\pm}\to p \bar{p} K^{\pm}) =(4.3^{+1.1}_{-0.9}({\rm stat})\pm 0.5({\rm...

We study the competition between the Kondo effect and frustrating exchange interactions in a Kondo-lattice model within a large-${\cal N}$ dynamical mean-field theory. We find a T=0 phase transition between a heavy Fermi-liquid and a spin-liquid for a critical value of the exchange $J_c = T_{K}^0$, the single-impurity Kondo temperature. Close to the critical point, the Fermi liquid coherence scale $T^\star$ is strongly reduced and the effective mass strongly enhanced. The regime $T>T^\star$...

In this work we develop an approach to obtain analytical expressions for potentials in an impenetrable box. It is illustrated through the particular cases of the harmonic oscillator and the Coulomb potential. In this kind of system the energy expression respect the correct quantum limits, which is a very important quality. The similarity of this kind of problem with the quasi exactly solvable potentials is explored in order to accomplish our goals.

Starting from a N=1 scalar supermultiplet in 2+1 dimensions, we demonstrate explicitly the appearance of induced N=1 vector and scalar supermultiplets of composite operators made out of the fundamental supersymmetric constituents. We discuss an extension to a N=2 superalgebra with central extension, due to the existence of topological currents in 2+1 dimensions. As a specific model we consider a supersymmetric $CP^1$ $\sigma$-model as the constituent theory, and discuss the relevance of these...

We present a minimal version for the renormalization of softly broken Super-Yang-Mills theories using the extended model with a local gauge coupling. It is shown that the non-renormalization theorems of the case with unbroken supersymmetry are valid without modifications and that the renormalization of soft-breaking parameters is completely governed by the renormalization of the supersymmetric parameters. The symmetry identities in the present context are peculiar, since the extended model...

We consider the evolution of perturbed cosmological spacetime with multiple fluids and fields in Einstein gravity. Equations are presented in gauge-ready forms, and are presented in various forms using the curvature (\Phi or \phi_\chi) and isocurvature (S_{(ij)} or \delta \phi_{(ij)}) perturbation variables in the general background with K and \Lambda. We clarify the conditions for conserved curvature and isocurvature perturbations in the large-scale limit. Evolutions of curvature perturbations...

Quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory shows three phase transitions, namely the chiral, the deconfinement and the Z3 phase transition. Knowing whether or not the chiral and the deconfinement phase transition occur at the same temperature for all Z3 sectors could be crucial to understand the underlying microscopic dynamics. We use the existence of a gap in the Dirac spectrum as an order parameter for the restoration of chiral symmetry. We find that the spectral gap opens up at the same critical...

The unitarity based analysis carried out in hep-ph/0106161, involving the evaluation of Jarlskog's rephasing invariant parameter J and the angles of the unitarity triangle is extended to include the effects of K^0-\bar K^0 and B^0-\bar B^0 mixings. The present analysis attempts to evaluate CP violating phase \delta, V_{td} and the angles of the unitarity triangle by invoking the constraints imposed by unitarity, K^0 -\bar K^0 and B^0 -\bar B^0 mixings separately as well as collectively, using...

A simple model of spacetime foam, made by $N$ Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m wormholes with a magnetic and electric charge in a semiclassical approximation, is taken under examination. The Casimir-like energy of the quantum fluctuation of such a model is computed and compared with that one obtained with a foamy space modeled by $N$ Schwarzschild wormholes. The comparison leads to the conclusion that a foamy spacetime cannot be considered as a collection of $N$ Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m wormholes...

We present a relativistic quantum calculation at first order in perturbation theory of the differential cross section for a Dirac particle scattered by the magnetic field of a solenoid. The resulting cross section is symmetric in the scattering angle as those obtained by Aharonov and Bohm (AB) in the string limit and by Landau and Lifshitz (LL) for the non relativistic case. We show that taking pr_0 sin(theta/2) < < 1 in our expression of the differential cross section it reduces to that...

We use fermion mean field theory to study possible plaquette ordering in the antiferromagnetic SU(4) Heisenberg model. We find the ground state for both the square and triangular lattices to be the disconnected plaquette state. Our mean field theory gives a first order transition for plaquette ordering for the triangular lattice. Our results suggest a large number of low lying states.

The pi^- p -> omega n threshold cross section measured in the seventies resisted up to now a consistent theoretical description in line with experiment, mainly caused by too large Born contributions. This led to a discussion in the literature about the correctness of the extraction of these data points. We show that the extraction method used in these references is indeed correct and that there is no reason to doubt the correctness of these data.

It is logically possible that early two-body relaxation in simulations of cosmological clustering influences the final structure of massive clusters. Convergence studies in which mass and spatial resolution are simultaneously increased, cannot eliminate this possibility. We test the importance of two-body relaxation in cosmological simulations with simulations in which there are two species of particles. The cases of two mass ratios, sqrt(2):1 and 4:1, are investigated. Simulations are run with...
