Sharp air mass boundaries, such as this one photographed by astronauts on board the Space Shuttle on June 17 2002, often are the focus of development for severe thunderstorms. This storm formed in the late afternoon over Eastern China. The sunlit anvil tops of thunderstorms here are estimated to be in excess of 60,000 feet (18,300 m) where icy cirrus clouds form near the top of the troposphere. The distribution and impact of such high clouds are a significant challenge to scientists modeling...

A high-pressure (up to 60 atm) gaseous burner facility with optical access that provides steady, reproducible flames with high precision, and the ability to use multiple fuel/oxidizer combinations has been developed. In addition, a high-performance spontaneous Raman scattering system for use in the above facility has also been developed. Together, the two systems will be used to acquire and establish a comprehensive Raman scattering spectral database for use as a quantitative high-pressure...

We present and review Coupled Two Way Clustering, a method designed to mine gene expression data. The method identifies submatrices of the total expression matrix, whose clustering analysis reveals partitions of samples (and genes) into biologically relevant classes. We demonstrate, on data from colon and breast cancer, that we are able to identify partitions that elude standard clustering analysis.

This set of four lectures was originally given at the VI Training Course in the Physics of Correlated Electron systems and High-Tc Superconductors, at Vietri Sur Mare, Italy (Oct 2001). The lectures are at an introductory level with exercises. The course describes the physics of moment formation, the Kondo effect and the development of a coherent heavy electron fluid in the dense Kondo lattice. The last lecture discusses the open problem of quantum criticality in heavy electron systems.

Using RXTE and ASCA data, we investigate the roles played by occultation and absorption in the X-ray spin pulse profile of the Intermediate Polar PQ Gem. From the X-ray light curves and phase-resolved spectroscopy, we find that the intensity variations are due to a combination of varying degrees of absorption and the accretion regions rotating behind the visible face of the white dwarf. These occultation and absorption effects are consistent with those expected from the accretion structures...

We developed a magneto-turbulent model for the cosmic ray (CR) electrons seen in the radio halo clusters of galaxies. Steady state momentum distribution functions of the CR electrons are calculated for given spectra of the turbulent Alfven waves. The radio spectrum produced by the obtained CR electron distribution is compared to the observed radio spectrum of the Coma radio halo. We find that the observed radio spectrum of the Coma cluster is well reproduced when the spectral index of the...

In the first part of this work, a perturbative analysis up to one-loop order is carried out to determine the one-loop $\beta$-function of noncommutative U(1) gauge theory with matter fields in the adjoint representation. In the second part, the conformal anomaly of the same theory is calculated using the Fujikawa's path integral method. The value of the one-loop $\beta$-function calculated in both methods coincides. As it turns out, noncommutative QED with matter fields in the adjoint...

We present an economical theory of natural electroweak symmetry breaking, generalizing an approach based on deconstruction. This theory is the smallest extension of the Standard Model to date that stabilizes the electroweak scale with a naturally light Higgs and weakly coupled new physics at TeV energies. The Higgs is one of a set of pseudo Goldstone bosons in an $SU(5)/SO(5)$ nonlinear sigma model. The symmetry breaking scale $f$ is around a TeV, with the cutoff $\Lambda \lsim 4\pi f \sim $ 10...

Maximum-likelihood methods are applied to the problem of absorption tomography. The reconstruction is done with the help of an iterative algorithm. We show how the statistics of the illuminating beam can be incorporated into the reconstruction. The proposed reconstruction method can be considered as a useful alternative in the extreme cases where the standard ill-posed direct-inversion methods fail.

We review the construction of regular p-brane solutions of M-theory and string theory with less than maximal supersymmetry whose transverse spaces have metrics with special holonomy, and where additional fluxes allow for brane resolutions via transgression terms. We summarize properties of resolved M2-branes and fractional D2-branes, whose transverse spaces are Ricci flat eight-dimensional and seven-dimensional spaces of special holonomy. We investigate the validity of the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics approach to dynamic fracture. We first test the predictions in a lattice simulation, using a formula of Eshelby for the time-dependent Stress Intensity Factor. Excellent agreement with the theory is found. We then use the same method to analyze the experiment of Sharon and Fineberg. The data here is not consistent with the theoretical expectation.

The Heidelberg Dark Matter Search (HDMS) is an experiment designed for the search for WIMP dark matter. It is using a special configuration of Ge detectors, to efficiently reduce the background in the low-energy region below 100 keV. After one year of running the HDMS detector prototype in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, the inner crystal of the detector has been replaced with a HPGe crystal of enriched $^{73}$Ge. The final setup started data taking in Gran Sasso in August 2000. The...

The method used and results obtained are described for calculation of the cross section for the pion diffractive dissociation into two jets. The main new qualitative result is that the distribution of longitudinal momenta for jets is not simply proportional to the profile of the pion wave function $\phi_{\pi}(x)$, but depends on it in a complicated way. In particular, it is shown that under conditions of the E791 experiment, the momentum distribution of jets is similar in its shape for the...

We prove in a direct fashion that a multidimensional probability measure is determinate if the higher dimensional analogue of Carleman's condition is satisfied. In that case, the polynomials, as well as certain proper subspaces of the trigonometric functions, are dense in the associated L_p spaces for all finite p. In particular these three statements hold if the reciprocal of a quasi-analytic weight has finite integral under the measure. We give practical examples of such weights, based on...

Let F and K be fields of characteristic 0, with F a subset of K. Let K[x] denote the ring of polynomials with coefficients in K. For p in K[x]\F[x], deg(p) = n, let r be the highest power of x with a coefficient not in F. We define the F deficit of p to be D_F(p) = n-r. For p in F[x], D_F(p) = n. Suppose that the leading coeffcients of p and q are in F, and that some coefficient of q(other than the constant term) is not in F. Our main result is that the F deficit of the composition of p with q...

These data are combined with measurements from the recent and past literature to build an homogeneous, uniform set of observations. We examine photoionization diagnostics like Fe^++ and Ar^0 in the majority of the complete sample and assess the impact of ionization corrections on N/alpha and alpha/H values derived from observed ionic column densities of N^0, Si^+, H^0, and S^+. Our final sample of 19 N/alpha,...

Medium modifications of the $\pi \omega \rho$ vertex are analyzed in context of the $\omega \to \pi^0 \gamma^\ast$ and $\rho \to \pi \gamma^\ast$ decays in nuclear matter. A relativistic hadronic model with mesons, nucleons, and $\Delta(1232)$ isobars is applied. A substantial increase of the widths for the decays $\omega \to \pi^0 \gamma^\ast$ and $\rho \to \pi \gamma^\ast$ is found for photon virtualities in the range $0.3-0.6$GeV. This enhancement has a direct importance for the description...

We introduce neutrino astronomy from the observational fact that Nature accelerates protons and photons to energies in excess of 10^{20} and 10^{13} eV, respectively. Although the discovery of cosmic rays dates back close to a century, we do not know how and where they are accelerated. We review the facts as well as the speculations about the sources. Among these gamma ray bursts and active galaxies represent well-motivated speculations because these are also the sources of the highest energy...

As data mining techniques are being increasingly applied to non-traditional domains, existing approaches for finding frequent itemsets cannot be used as they cannot model the requirement of these domains. An alternate way of modeling the objects in these data sets, is to use a graph to model the database objects. Within that model, the problem of finding frequent patterns becomes that of discovering subgraphs that occur frequently over the entire set of graphs. In this paper we present a...
