During the period December 23, 1997 and December August 31, 2004, we accomplished the development of 2 CFD codes for DNS/LES/RANS simulation of turbine cascade flows, namely LESTool and UNCLE. LESTool is a structured code making use of 5th order upwind differencing scheme and UNCLE is a second-order-accuracy unstructured code. LESTool has both Dynamic SGS and Sparlart's DES models and UNCLE makes use of URANS and DES models. The current report provides a description of methodologies used in the...

The focus of this project was the study of the physics of mesoscopic devices, e.g. single electron devices, related to their use in quantum computation. Theoretical work focused on the design of novel qubit and gate structures using Josephson junctions in the regime of charge dynamics, and theory of mesoscopic quantum measurements including quantum-detector properties of solid-state devices, most importantly, SET transistors. The major experimental effort in this project was the study of the...

The paper examines part of the ground state diagram of the extended Hubbard model, with the on-site attraction U 0 in the presence of charge density waves, superconducting and $\eta$-superconducting order parameters. We show the possibility of the stabilization of the mixed state, with all three nonzero order parameters, in the model with nearest neighbor interactions. The other result of the paper is application of the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation for the two electron bound...

We studied polarization effects in tau production by neutrino-nucleon scattering. Quasi-elastic scattering, $Delta$ resonance production and deep inelastic scattering processes are taken into account for the CERN-to-Gran Sasso projects. We show that the tau produced by neutrino has high degree of polarization, and its spin direction depends non-trivially on the energy and the scattering angle of tau in the laboratory frame.

We derive a dynamic field theory for a kinetically constrained model, based on the Fredrickson--Andersen model, which we expect to describe the properties of an Arrhenius (strong) supercooled liquid at the coarse-grained level. We study this field theory using the renormalization group. For mesoscopic length and time scales, and for space dimension d \geq 2, the behaviour of the model is governed by a zero-temperature dynamical critical point in the directed percolation universality class. We...

We perform an orthogonal basis tight binding fit to an LAPW calculation of paramagnetic Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for several dopings. The optimal position of the apical oxygen at each doping is resolved, revealing a non-trivial dependence of the band structure and Fermi surface on oxygen height. We find that the small e$_{g'}$ hole pockets are preserved throughout all investigated dopings and discuss some possible reasons for the lack of experimental evidence for these Fermi sheets.

We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly bound $^6$Li$_2$ molecules to precisely determine the molecular binding energies and the energy splittings between molecular states for different magnetic fields. These measurements allow us to extract the interaction parameters of ultracold $^6$Li atoms based on a multi-channel quantum scattering model. We determine the singlet and triplet scattering lengths to be $a_s=45.167(8)a_0$ and $a_t=-2140(18)a_0$ (1 $a_0$ = 0.0529177 nm), and the...

Provided SUSY is realized in Nature, future colliders like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and a future e+e- linear collider (LC) will provide a wealth of data on SUSY phenomena. One important task will be to extract the Lagrangian parameters at the electroweak scale from the numerous measured observables and to extrapolate them to a high scale to check whether unification takes place or to learn about the SUSY breaking mechanism. To accomplish such a task, two new programs, SFITTER and...

We address the locality problem arising in simulations, which take the square root of the staggered fermion determinant as a Boltzmann weight to reduce the number of dynamical quark tastes from four to two. We study analytically and numerically the square root of the staggered fermion operator as a candidate to define a two taste theory from first principles. Although it has the correct weight, this operator is non-local in the continuum limit. Our work serves as a warning that fundamental...

This project focused on an investigation of the feasibility of pulse-combustion-based micro heat engines for electrical power generation. The micro heat engines to be studied are based on a reciprocating free piston that is driven by a periodic pulse combustion process, resulting in high levels of integration of the mechanical and electrical functionality of the engine (i.e., the same piston performs both the fuel-to-mechanical energy conversion as well as the mechanical-to-electrical energy...

We study the BSFT actions by using an analytic continuation in momentum space. We compute various two- and three- point functions for some low-lying excitations including massive states on BPS/non-BPS D-branes. The off-shell two-point functions for the tachyon, the gauge field and the massive fields are found to reproduce the well-known string mass-shell conditions. We compare our action with the tachyon actions previously obtained by the derivative expansion (or the linear tachyon profiles),...

The main objective of this program is to develop high birefringence liquid crystal (LC) materials and tunable-focus LC lens. A higher birefringence enables a thinner LC layer to be used which results in a faster response time. Low viscosity is always favorable as it helps to reduce the response time. We have developed several new LC compounds and mixtures exhibiting birefringence higher than 0.6. In parallel, we have demonstrated several device configurations for the tunablefocus spherical and...

Near-critical behavior of the free surface of an ideally conducting liquid in an external electric field is considered. Based on an analysis of three-wave processes using the method of integral estimations, sufficient criteria for hard instability of a planar surface are formulated. It is shown that the higher-order nonlinearities do not saturate the instability, for which reason the growth of disturbances has an explosive character.

A large volume time projection chamber (TPC) has been proposed as main tracking device for a detector at a future linear e+e- collider. Gas electron multipliers (GEMs) are studied as potential replacement of the conventional wire based gas amplification system of TPCs. This talk presents recent results from R&D activities with a small GEM-TPC prototype. The spatial resolution was measured for different magnetic fields up to 4 T.

We show that differently constructed ensembles having the same density matrix may be physically distinguished by observing fluctuations of some observables. An explicit expression for fluctuations of an observable in an ensemble is given. This result challenges Peres's fundamental postulate and seems to be contrary to the widely-spread belief that ensembles with the same density matrix are physically identical. This leads us to suggest that the current liquid NMR quantum computing is truly...

Quantum information processing using photons has recently been stimulated by the suggestion to use linear optics, single photon sources and detectors. The recent work by Knill has also shown that errors in photon detectors leads to a high error rate threshold (around 29%). An important missing element are good single photon sources. In this paper we show how to make a single photon source using squeezed states, linear optics and conditional measurement. We use degenerate squeezed vacuum states,...

We consider four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories in a supergravity background. We use generalized Konishi anomaly equations and R-symmetry anomaly to compute the exact perturbative and non-perturbative gravitational F-terms. We study two types of theories: The first model breaks supersymmetry dynamically, and the second is based on a $G_2$ gauge group. The results are compared with the corresponding vector models. We discuss the diagrammatic expansion of the $G_2$ theory.

We study the thermodynamic phases of a gas of spin-1/2 atoms in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Our main result is that, for repulsive or weakly-attractive inter-component interaction strength, the superfluid and ferromagnetic phase transitions occur at the same temperature. For strongly-attractive inter-component interaction strength, however, the ferromagnetic phase transition occurs at a higher temperature than the superfluid phase transition. We also find that the presence of a condensate...

We discuss the equation of state (EoS) for two flavor QCD at non-zero temperature and density. Derivatives of $\ln Z$ with respect to quark chemical potential $\mu_q$ are calculated up to sixth order. From this Taylor series, the pressure, quark number density and associated susceptibilities are estimated as functions of temperature and $\mu_q$. It is found that the fluctuations in the quark number density increase in the vicinity of the phase transition temperature and the susceptibilities...

The existence of extra dimensions allows the possibility that the fundamental scale of gravity is at the TeV. If that is the case, gravity could dominate the interactions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In particular, the production of microscopic black holes by cosmogenic neutrinos has been estimated in a number of papers. We consider here gravity-mediated interactions at larger distances, where they can be calculated in the eikonal approximation. We show that for the expected flux of...
