In this article an attempt is made to review some of the original works leading to new developments of calorimeters which are so widely and successfully used in astro and particle physics experiments. This report is far from being complete and the author apologizes for omissions and misquotations.

James York, in a major extension of Andr\'e Lichnerowicz's work, showed how to construct solutions to the constraint equations of general relativity. The York method consists of choosing a 3-metric on a given manifold; a divergence-free, tracefree (TT) symmetric 2-tensor wrt this metric; and a single number, the trace of the extrinsic curvature. One then obtains a quasi-linear elliptic equation for a scalar function, the Lichnerowicz-York (L-Y) equation. The solution of this equation is used as...

We present results from the theoretical modelling of the observed B,V light curves of 14 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The sample includes 7 fundamental and 7 first overtone pulsators covering the metallicity range from -2.12 to -0.79 dex in [Fe/H], with average value of -1.54 dex. Masses, intrinsic luminosities, effective temperatures, and reddenings were derived by fitting high accuracy multiband light curves available for these RR Lyrae stars to nonlinear convective pulsation...

The gravitational wave (GW) signals emitted by a network of cosmic strings are reexamined in view of the possible formation of a network of cosmic superstrings at the end of brane inflation. The reconnection probability $p$ of intersecting fundamental or Dirichlet strings might be much smaller than 1, and the properties of the resulting string network may differ significantly from those of ordinary strings (which have $p=1$). In addition, it has been recently suggested that the typical length...

In this paper, globally N=1 supersymmetric configurations of intersecting D6-branes on the Z6-orientifold are discussed, involving also fractional branes. It turns out rather miraculously that one is led almost automatically to just ONE particular class of 5 stack models containing the SM gauge group, which all have the same chiral spectrum. The further discussion shows that these models can be understood as exactly the supersymmetric standard model without any exotic chiral...

We investigate the attenuation of hadrons in deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering in the kinematical regime of the HERMES and Jefferson Lab experiments. The calculation is carried out in the framework of a BUU transport model. Our results indicate a strong influence of (pre)hadronic final state interactions on the observed multiplicity ratios.

We consider the analytically solvable model of a Gaussian pulse tunneling through a transmission resonance with a general Fano characteristic. It is demonstrated that the transmitted pulse contains enough information to determine uniquely all parameters defining the Fano resonance. This is in contrast to the measurement of the static conductance. Our analytical model is in agreement with numerical data published recently for the limit of a Breit-Wigner resonance. We identify two opposite pulse...

We investigate the class of unital C*-algebras that admit a unital embedding into every unital C*-algebra of real rank zero, that has no finite-dimensional quotients. We refer to a C*-algebra in this class as an initial object. We show that there are many initial objects, including for example some unital, simple, infinite-dimensional AF-algebras, the Jiang-Su algebra, and the GICAR-algebra. That the GICAR-algebra is an initial object follows from an analysis of Hausdorff moment sequences. It...

In this work quantum physics in noncommutative spacetime is developed. It is based on the work of Doplicher et al. which allows for time-space noncommutativity. The Moyal plane is treated in detail. In the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics, some important points are explored, such as the formal construction of the theory, symmetries, causality, simultaneity and observables. The dynamics generated by a noncommutative Schrodinger equation is studied. We prove in particular the...

We investigate the continuum q-Potts model at its transition point from the disordered to the ordered regime, with particular emphasis on the coexistence of disordered and ordered phases in the high-q case. We argue that occurrence of phase transition can be seen as percolation in the related random cluster representation, similarly to the lattice Potts model, and investigate the typical structure of clusters for high q. We also report on numerical simulations in two dimensions using a...

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope finds a delicate flower in the Ring Nebula, as shown in this image. The outer shell of this planetary nebula looks surprisingly similar to the delicate petals of a camellia blossom. A planetary nebula is a shell of material ejected from a dying star. Located about 2,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Lyra, the Ring Nebula is also known as Messier Object 57 and NGC 6720. It is one of the best examples of a planetary nebula and a favorite target of...

A principal `supernova neutrino challenge' is the computational difficulty of six-dimensional neutrino radiation hydrodynamics. The variety of resulting approximations has provoked a long history of uncertainty in the core-collapse supernova explosion mechanism, but recent work highlighting low-mode convection and a newly-recognized instability in spherical accretion shocks may signal (yet another) resolution. As part of its goal of elucidating the explosion mechanism, the Terascale Supernova...

We report on a field-induced change of the electronic band structure of CeBiPt as evidenced by electrical-transport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields. Above ~25 T, the charge-carrier concentration increases nearly 30% with a concomitant disappearance of the Shubnikov-de Haas signal. These features are intimately related to the Ce 4f electrons since for the non-4f compound LaBiPt the Fermi surface remains unaffected. Electronic band-structure calculations point to a 4f-polarization-induced...

Using exact diagonalizations and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied the zero-temperature properties of the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice on clusters with up to 588 sites. A detailed comparison of the properties in different topological sectors as a function of the cluster size and for different cluster shapes has allowed us to identify different phases, to show explicitly the presence of topological degeneracy in a phase close to the Rokhsar-Kivelson...

We discuss the nature of the possible high-l excess in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum observed by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI). We probe the angular structure of the excess in the CBI deep fields and investigate whether it could be due to the scattering of CMB photons by hot electrons within clusters, the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. We estimate the density fluctuation parameters for amplitude, sigma_8, and shape, Gamma, from CMB primary anisotropy data...

We consider specific quantum mechanical model problems for which perturbation theory fails to explain physical properties like the eigenvalue spectrum even qualitatively, even if the asymptotic perturbation series is augmented by resummation prescriptions to "cure" the divergence in large orders of perturbation theory. Generalizations of perturbation theory are necessary which include instanton configurations, characterized by nonanalytic factors exp(-a/g) where a is a constant and g...
