The effect of gravitational microlensing on the determination of extragalactic distances using surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) technique is considered and a method to calculate SBF amplitudes in presence of microlensing is presented. With a simple approximation for the magnification power spectrum at low optical depth the correction to the SBF-based luminosity distance is calculated. The results suggest the effect can be safely neglected at present but may become important for SBF-based...

The problem of resolving spherical harmonic components from numerical data defined on a rectangular grid has many applications, particularly for the problem of gravitational radiation extraction. A novel method due to Misner improves on traditional techniques by avoiding the need to cover the sphere with a coordinate system appropriate to the grid geometry. This paper will discuss Misner's method and suggest how it can be improved by exploiting local regression techniques.

We present a theoretical study of an escape rate for switching from the superconducting state to a resistive one in series arrays of strongly interacting Josephson junctions. At low temperatures such a switching is determined by macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of a spatially extended Josephson phase. An increase of the crossover temperature from the thermal to quantum regimes, and a giant enhancement of MQT escape rate is obtained. Such an effect is explained by excitation of collective...

Recent optical absorption/emission experiments showed that the lower energy optical transitions in carbon nanotubes are excitonic in nature, as predicted by theory. These experiments were based on the symmetry aspects of free electron-hole states and bound excitonic states. The present work shows, however, that group theory does not predict the selection rules needed to explain the two photon experiments. We obtain the symmetries and selection rules for the optical transitions of excitons in...

An essential spanning forest of an infinite graph $G$ is a spanning forest of $G$ in which all trees have infinitely many vertices. Let $G_n$ be an increasing sequence of finite connected subgraphs of $G$ for which $\bigcup G_n=G$. Pemantle's arguments imply that the uniform measures on spanning trees of $G_n$ converge weakly to an $\operatorname {Aut}(G)$-invariant measure $\mu_G$ on essential spanning forests of $G$. We show that if $G$ is a connected, amenable graph and $\Gamma \subset...

Uncertainty in the PQCD calculation of B decays is investigated in $B\to \pi$, $B\to D$ transition form factors and $B\to D\pi$ decay amplitudes. $B$ meson distributionamplitude dependence is studied by taking three kinds of distribution amplitude so far suggested. It is found that almost same $q^2$ dependence of the form factors can be obtained irrespective of the types of the $B$ meson distribution amplitude by suitably choosing one parameter. $B\to D\pi$ process shows the difference due to...

We show that the primordial curvature perturbations may originate not from the quantum fluctuations of inflaton during inflation but from isocurvature perturbations which are amplified during preheating after inflation. We consider a simple preheating model, whose potential is given by $V(\phi, \chi)={1/4}\lambda \phi^4+{1/2}g^2 \phi^2 \chi^2$ with $g^2/\lambda=2$, as a possible realization of generating curvature perturbations during preheating. We make use of the $\delta N$ formalism which...

The optical/near-infrared (OIR) region of the spectra of low-mass X-ray binaries appears to lie at the intersection of a variety of different emission processes. In this paper we present quasi-simultaneous OIR - X-ray observations of 33 XBs in an attempt to estimate the contributions of various emission processes in these sources, as a function of X-ray state and luminosity. A global correlation is found between OIR and X-ray luminosity for low-mass black hole candidate XBs (BHXBs) in the hard...

Using the Calogero model as an example, we show that the transport in interacting non-dissipative electronic systems is essentially non-linear. Non-linear effects are due to the curvature of the electronic spectrum near the Fermi energy. As is typical for non-linear systems, propagating wave packets are unstable. At finite time shock wave singularities develop, the wave packet collapses, and oscillatory features arise. They evolve into regularly structured localized pulses carrying a...

We investigate the competition between the dipolar and the exchange interaction in a ferromagnetic slab with finite thickness and finite width. From an analytical approximate expression for the Ginzburg-Landau effective Hamiltonian, it is shown that, within a self-consistent Hartree approach, a stable modulated configuration arises. We study the transition between the disordered phase and two kinds of modulated configurations, namely, striped and bubble phases. Such transitions are of the...

We investigate the modifications brought about by the linear connectivity among charges in the classical Thomson problem. Instead of packing with local hexagonal order intersperced with topological defects, we find charge distributions with helical symmetry wound around the surface of the sphere. This finding should have repercussions in the viral packing and macroion adsorption theories.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) estimates that without a servicing mission to replace key components, the Hubble Space Telescope will cease scientific operations in 2008 instead of 2010. In January 2004, then-NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe announced that the space shuttle would no longer be used to service Hubble. He indicated that this decision was based primarily on safety concerns in the wake of the space shuttle Columbia accident in 2003. Many critics, however, saw...

Recorded at the first show in Los Angeles, at the end of the 2006 recording, the audio quality is incredible (barring a few patches of diginoise), the band is in great form ('Morning Bell', 'Arpeggi', and 'Videotape' are very hyped-up), and the setlist is great - eight new songs, six from Kid A , 'Lucky' as closer, even 'Follow Me Around'! A must-have recording. Track listing: [intro] You and Whose Army? The National Anthem 2+2=5 15 Step Morning Bell...

We calculate the broadband radio--X-ray spectra predicted by microblazar and microquasar models for Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), exploring the possibility that their dominant power-law component is produced by a relativistic jet, even at near-Eddington mass accretion rates. We do this by first constructing a generalized disk--jet theoretical framework in which some fraction of the total accretion power Pa is efficiently removed from the accretion disk by a magnetic torque responsible...

The colour and luminosity distributions of red galaxies in the cluster Abell 1185 (z=0.0325) were studied down to M*+8 in the B, V and R bands. The colour-magnitude (hereafter CM) relation is linear without evidence for a significant bending down to absolute magnitudes which are seldom probed in literature (M_R=-12.5 mag). The CM relation is thin (+/-0.04 mag) and its thickness is quite independent from the magnitude. The luminosity function of red galaxies in Abell 1185 is adequately described...

Hellinger, R. Moufang, C. L. Siegel, A. Weil, P. Epstein, W. Hartner are named among others. Of course these texts are centered around the critical period 1933-1941. Comments, references, and acknowledgements have been added by the translator, which does not claim any competence. In fact...

In this note, we will point out, as a corollary of Popa's rigidity theory, that the crossed product von Neumann algebras for Bernoulli shifts cannot have relative property T. This is an operator algebra analogue of the theorem shown by Neuhauser and Cherix-Martin-Valette for discrete groups. Our proof is different from that for groups.

In this Letter, we announce the discovery of a new satellite of the Milky Way in the constellation of Bootes at a distance of 60 kpc. It was found in a systematic search for stellar overdensities in the North Galactic Cap using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5). The color-magnitude diagram shows a well-defined turn-off, red giant branch, and extended horizontal branch. Its absolute magnitude is -5.8, which makes it one of the faintest galaxies known. The half-light radius is...
