It is demonstrated that parallel weakly coupled quantum dots exhibit non-equilibrium blockade regimes caused by a full occupation in the spin triplet state, in analogy to the Pauli spin blockade in serially weakly coupled quantum dots. Charge tends to accumulate in the two-electron triplet for bias voltages that support transitions between the singlet and three-electron states.

We study temperature chaos in a two-dimensional Ising spin glass with random quenched bimodal couplings, by an exact computation of the partition functions on large systems. We study two temperature correlators from the total free energy and from the domain wall free energy: in the second case we detect a chaotic behavior. We determine and discuss the chaos exponent and the fractal dimension of the domain walls.

A geoacoustic inversion technique for high-frequency (12 kHz) multibeam sonar data is presented as a means to classify the seafloor sediment in shallow water (40--300 m). The inversion makes use of backscattered data at a variety of grazing angles to estimate mean grain size. The need for sediment type and the large amounts of multibeam data being collected with the Naval Oceanographic Office's Simrad EM 121A systems, have fostered the development of algorithms to process the EM 121A acoustic...

Recent experiments at Jefferson Laboratory and potential new facilities at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) make it evident that the discovery of a spin-singlet S-wave di-cascade bound state of two cascade (Xi) particles is feasible. We state the simple arguments, based on SU(3) flavor symmetry, for the existence of this bound state, review the previous predictions and comment on the experimental conditions necessary for detection.

Following recent progresses in the understanding of high-energy scattering in QCD, we derive the first phenomenological consequences of Pomeron loops, in the context of both inclusive and diffractive deep inelastic scattering. In particular, we discuss diffusive scaling, a new scaling law that emerges for sufficiently high energies and up to very large values of $Q^2,$ well above the proton saturation momentum.

Determining the speed of a ball as a function of its height after it is launched straight upward in the absence of fluid resistance is a standard problem treated at all levels of introductory physics. Inclusion of drag in the problem is seldom covered even in the introductory course for majors. But, in fact, this problem can be solved via a straightforward application of the work-energy theorem for either linear or quadratic drag, and instructively plotted on graphs of kinetic versus potential...

In a d-simplex every facet is a (d-1)-simplex. We consider as generalized simplices other combinatorial classes of polytopes, all of whose facets are in the class. Cubes and multiplexes are two such classes of generalized simplices. In this paper we study a new class, braxtopes, which arise as the faces of periodically-cyclic Gale polytopes. We give a geometric construction for these polytopes and various combinatorial properties.

We consider a stochastic process driven by a diffusion and jumps. We devise a technique, which is based on a discrete record of observations, for identifying the times when jumps larger than a suitably defined threshold occurred. The technique allows also jump size estimation. We prove the consistency of a nonparametric estimator of the integrated infinitesimal variance of the process continuous part when the jump component with infinite activity is Levy. Central limit results are proved in the...

The GLD is a detector for the experiment at the International Linear Collider (ILC). It consists of a large calorimeter and a gaseous central tracker placed in a moderate magnetic field, both electro-magnetic and hadron calorimeters being placed inside the magnetic coil to have enough hermeticity and good jet energy resolution. The outline of the GLD is presented.

Both the additional non-linear term in the Schr\"odinger equation and the additional non-Hamiltonian term in the von Neumann equation, proposed to ensure localisation and decoherence of macro-objects, resp., contain the same Newtonian interaction potential formally. We discuss certain aspects that are common for both equations. In particular, we calculate the enhancement of the proposed localisation and/or decoherence effects, which would take place if one could lower the conventional...

Following the recent outburst of the recurrent nova RS Oph on 2006 Feb 12, we measured its near-infrared size using the IOTA, Keck, and PTI Interferometers at multiple epochs. The characteristic size of ~3 milliarcseconds hardly changed over the first 60 days of the outburst, ruling out currently-popular models whereby the near-infrared emission arises from hot gas in the expanding shock. The emission was also found to be significantly asymmetric, evidenced by non-zero closure phases detected...

In this paper the relationship between the density functional theory of freezing and phase field modeling is examined. More specifically a connection is made between the correlation functions that enter density functional theory and the free energy functionals used in phase field crystal modeling and standard models of binary alloys (i.e., regular solution model). To demonstrate the properties of the phase field crystal formalism a simple model of binary alloy crystallization is derived and...

An impurity particle coupling to its host fluid via inelastic hard sphere collisions is considered. It is shown that the exact equation for its distribution function can be mapped onto that for an impurity with elastic collisions and an effective mass. Application of this result to the Enskog--Lorentz kinetic equation leads to several conclusions: 1) every solution in the elastic case is equivalent to a class of solutions in the granular case; 2) for an equilibrium host fluid the granular...

When is a nonlinear filter stable with respect to its initial condition? In spite of the recent progress, this question still lacks a complete answer in general. Currently available results indicate that stability of the filter depends on the signal ergodic properties and the observation process regularity and may fail if either of the ingredients is ignored. In this note we address the question of stability in a particular weak sense and show that the estimates of certain functions are always...

We describe the Chow ring with rational coefficients of Mbar_{0,1}(P^n,d) as the subring of invariants of a ring B(Mbar_{0,1}(P^n,d);Q), relative to the action of the group of symmetries S_d. We compute B(Mbar_{0,1}(P^n,d);Q) by following a sequence of intermediate spaces for Mbar_{0,1}(P^n,d).

Guided by the large-Nc limit of QCD, we construct the most general chiral resonance Lagrangian that can generate chiral low-energy constants up to O(p^6). By integrating out the resonance fields, the low-energy constants are parametrized in terms of resonance masses and couplings. Information on those couplings and on the low-energy constants can be extracted by analysing QCD Green functions of currents both for large and small momenta. The chiral resonance theory generates Green functions that...

In this paper we present an effort to extend the LLM construction of 1/2 BPS states in minimal IIB supergravity to configurations that preserve 1/4 of the total number of supersymmetries. Following the same techniques we reduce the problem to that of a single scalar which satisfies a non-linear equation. In particular, the scalar is identified to be the Kahler potential with which a four dimensional base space is equipped.

We show that the phenomenology of isospin effects on heavy ion reactions at intermediate energies (few AGeV range) is extremely rich and can allow a ``direct'' study of the covariant structure of the isovector interaction in the hadron medium. We work within a relativistic transport frame, beyond a cascade picture, consistently derived from effective Lagrangians, where isospin effects are accounted for in the mean field and collision terms. Rather sensitive observables are proposed from...

We investigate an economic system in which one large agent - the Japan government changes the environment of numerous smaller agents - the Japan agriculture producers by indirect regulation of prices of agriculture goods. The reason for this intervention was that before the oil crisis in 1974 Japan agriculture production prices exhibited irregular and large amplitude changes. By means of analysis of correlations and a combination of singular spectrum analysis (SSA), principal component analysis...

A number of groups are planning a new generation of experiments using stored gases of various kinds. We have developed a self-consistent physical model for super stellar cluster winds based on combining a 1-D steady-state adiabatic wind solution and a non-equilibrium ionization calculation. Comparing with the case of collisional ionization equilibrium, we find that the non-equilibrium ionization effect is significant in the regime of a high ratio of energy to mass input rate and manifests in a stronger soft X-ray flux in the inner region of the star cluster. Implementing the model in X-ray...

We construct new 1/2 supersymmetric solutions in D=3, N=2, matter coupled, U(1) gauged supergravities and study some of their properties. We do this by employing a quite general supersymmetry breaking condition, from which we also redrive some of the already known solutions. Among the new solutions, we have an explicit non-topological soliton for the non-compact sigma model, a locally flat solution for the compact sigma model and a string-like solution for both types of sigma models. The last...
