We present millimeter line observations of the HH 111 outflow and its driving source. The molecular gas emission observed with IRAM 30m and the CSO reveals a small condensation of cold and dense gas. The low-velocity outflow has been mapped with the IRAM PdBI interferometer. The cold gas is distributed in a hollow cylinder surrounding the optical jet. The formation of this cavity and its kinematics are well accounted for in the frame of outflow gas entrainment by jet bow shocks. Evidence of gas...

Army mobile ground communication systems typically require an antenna that provides large bandwidth, optimized power efficiency, and a small visual signature. A technique known as direct antenna modulation is a promising candidate to provide all three of these characteristics. By utilizing high-speed semiconductor switching components to directly modulate an antenna with a baseband pulse-modulated signal, the information bandwidth of the antenna may be decoupled from its resonant bandpass...

We propose a new algebraic framework to discuss and classify recognizable tree languages, and to characterize interesting classes of such languages. Our algebraic tool, called preclones, encompasses the classical notion of syntactic Sigma-algebra or minimal tree automaton, but adds new expressivity to it. The main result in this paper is a variety theorem \`{a} la Eilenberg, but we also discuss important examples of logically defined classes of recognizable tree languages, whose...

We address a recent experiment in which a strong decrease of the resistance of a superconducting film has been observed when a remote unbiased gate was placed above the film. Here we explain the experimental finding as a suppression of the vortex tunneling due to the Orthogonality Catastrophe of the electrons inside the gate. We interpret the change in the resistance of the film as a "metal-insulator" transition in the system of vortices induced by the gate.

We analyze the coupled non-linear integro-differential equations whose solutions is the thermodynamical limit of the empirical correlation and response functions in the Langevin dynamics for spherical p-spin disordered mean-field models. We provide a mathematically rigorous derivation of their FDT solution (for the high temperature regime) and of certain key properties of this solution, which are in agreement with earlier derivations based on physical grounds.

The undecidability of the additive theory of primes (with identity) as well as the theory Th(N,+, n -> p\_n), where p\_n denotes the (n+1)-th prime, are open questions. As a possible approach, we extend the latter theory by adding some extra function. In this direction we show the undecidability of the existential part of the theory Th(N, +, n -> p\_n, n -> r\_n), where r\_n is the remainder of p\_n divided by n in the euclidian division.

The coming wave of multi-core, multithreaded processors will create a parallelism crisis. That is, the performance potential of these processors will only be realized when we can find sufficient thread-level parallelism to keep them busy. This will require advances not only in traditional approaches to parallelism, but also require non-traditional approaches to parallel speedup (i.e., approaches that can achieve speedup by using multiple threads, even when the code is inherently serial). This...

We analyse a simple setup in which a quantum dot is strongly connected to a metallic grain or finite size wire and weakly connected to two normal leads. The Kondo screening cloud essentially develops in the strongly coupled grain whereas the two weakly connected reservoirs can be used as transport probes. Since the transport channels and the screening channels are almost decoupled, such a setup allows an easier access to the measure of finite-size Kondo effects.

The elastic and magnetic properties of a single crystal of 327 bilayer manganese oxide $(La_{1-z} Pr_z)_{1.2} Sr_{1.8} Mn_2 O_7$ with $z$=0.6 have been investigated by ultrasonic and high-field magnetization measurements. A distinct elastic anomaly was observed at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields when crossing the phase boundary. A pronounced elastic softening as a function of magnetic field ($H$) appears across the boundary of the low-temperature magnetic phase below around 40 K,...

We study the softcore extended Bose Hubbard model in a two-dimensional triangular lattice by using the quantum Monte Carlo methods. The ground state phase diagram of the system exhibits a very fruitful structure. Except the Mott insulating state, four kinds of solid states with respect to the commensurate filling factors $\rho=1/3,2/3$ and $\rho=1$ are identified. Two of them (CDW II and CDW III) are newly predicted. In incommensurate fillings, superfluid, spuersolid as well as phase separation...

Ferromagnetism is observed below 10 K in [Bi0.75Te0.125Mn0.125]Te. This material has the BiTe structure, which is made from the stacking of two Te-Bi-Te-Bi-Te blocks and one Bi-Bi block per unit cell. Crystal structure analysis shows that Mn is localized in the Bi2 blocks, and is accompanied by an equal amount of TeBi anti-site occupancy in the Bi2Te3 blocks. These TeBi anti-site defects greatly enhance the Mn solubility. This is demonstrated by comparison of the [Bi1-xMnx]Te and...

We theoretically study the nonlocal spin transport in a device consisting of a nonmagnetic metal (N) and ferromagnetic injector (F1) and detector (F2) electrodes connected to N. We solve the spin-dependent transport equations in a device with arbitrary interface resistance from a metallic-contact to tunneling regime, and obtain the conditions for efficient spin injection, accumulation, and transport in the device. In a device containing a superconductor (F1/S/F2), the effect of...

XPath is a simple language for navigating an XML-tree and returning a set of answer nodes. The focus in this paper is on the complexity of the containment problem for various fragments of XPath. We restrict attention to the most common XPath expressions which navigate along the child and/or descendant axis. In addition to basic expressions using only node tests and simple predicates, we also consider disjunction and variables (ranging over nodes). Further, we investigate the containment problem...

The first in a long series of papers by John T. Lewis, G. W. Ford and the present author, considered the problem of the most general coupling of a quantum particle to a linear passive heat bath, in the course of which they derived an exact formula for the free energy of an oscillator coupled to a heat bath in thermal equilibrium at temperature T. This formula, and its later extension to three dimensions to incorporate a magnetic field, has proved to be invaluable in analyzing problems in...

The sum rule for the structure function $g_1^{p}$ which is related to the cross section of the photo-production is used to show that a sign change of the integral corresponding to the appropriately defined moment at $n=0$ where the integral is cut at the point $x=x_c(Q^2)$ occurs at very small $Q^2$ near $Q^2\sim 0.09$(GeV/c)$^2$ and $x_c\sim 0.024$. This fact shows that the origin of the sign difference between the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule and the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule lies in the rapid...

Consider a Hamiltonian torus action on a connected symplectic manifold M for which the associated moment map Phi is proper in some sense. Let Q be a closed submanifold of M. We show that under certain local conditions on Q one has Phi(Q)=Phi(M). We apply this result in the special case that Q arises as the fixed point set of some involution on M which is not necessarily antisymplectic.

The main goal of the paper is to generalize Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for coherent sheaves on projective spaces to coherent sheaves on $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties $X$ with an $n$-block collection $\cB $ which generates the bounded derived category $\cD ^b({\cO}_X$-$mod)$. To this end, we use the theory of $n$-blocks and Beilinson type spectral sequence to define the notion of regularity of a coherent sheaf $F$ on $X$ with respect to the $n$-block collection $\cB $. We show...

The actions of a half Virasoro algebra have appeared in many integrable systems. In this paper we show that there is an action of a (Half) Virasoro algebra on the space of (2+0) harmonic maps into a Lie group. This action is generated by a natural action on the frames. A similar calculation on the space-time (1+1) harmonic maps yields formulas generated by John Schwarz.

We study analytically quasinormal modes in a wide variety of black hole spacetimes, including $d$--dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes and non-asymptotically flat spacetimes (particular attention has been paid to the four dimensional case). We extend the analytical calculation to include first-order corrections to analytical expressions for quasinormal mode frequencies by making use of a monodromy technique. All possible type perturbations are included in this paper. The calculation...

This investigation takes advantage of the spatial resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope to study the structure and energetics of the central 10 - 20 pc, and the resulting data have value for quantifying central black hole masses, star formation histories, and nebular properties. This paper provides a description of the experimental design, and new findings from the study of emission lines....

Many galaxies display warps, lopsided images, asymmetric rotation curves or other features which suggest that their immediate dynamical environment is neither static nor in equilibrium. In Cold Dark Matter (CDM) theories, such non-equilibrium features are expected in the inner regions of many dark haloes as a result of recent hierarchical growth. We used the excellent statistics provided by the very large Millennium Simulation to study (i) how the distribution of position and velocity...
