KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- The orbiter Atlantis, on top of its transporter, heads for the Vehicle Assembly Building (behind it) after leaving the Orbiter Processing Facility. First motion out of OPF was at 6:19 a.m. EST. Once in the VAB, Atlantis will be lifted into high bay 1 and mated with the external tank and solid rocket boosters already in place on the mobile launcher platform. The rollover signals the start of the journey to the launch pad for liftoff on mission STS-117 targeted for...

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the Thermal Protection System Facility, NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe looks at a Dome Heat Shield blanket that is used for Shuttle engines. O'Keefe is visiting the site to learn more about the TPS products and process in protecting orbiters from the intense heat of launch and re-entry. TPS tiles have been discussed in the investigation into the Columbia tragedy that destroyed the orbiter and claimed the lives of seven astronauts.

We measured the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission spectrum of 16N with a sensitivity for beta-decay branching ratios of the order of 10-10. The 16N nuclei were produced using the d(15N,16N)p reaction with 70 MeV 15N beams and a deuterium gas target 7.5 cm long at a pressure of 1250 torr. The 16N nuclei were collected (over 10 s) using a thin aluminum foil with an areal density of 180 mu g/cm2 tilted at 7 Deg with respect to the beam. The activity was transferred to the counting area by means...

There are many indicators that people feel technology is speeding up and complicating their lives. In response, many individuals reject certain computing and communications technologies when given the choice (e.g., for use in their homes). Current research in ubiquitous computing has a tendency to fall into this same trap, offering overly complex technology supporting new functions with little value to users. The Digital Simplicity project instead offers a different value proposition: take this...

With more than 60 million units sold and counting, the iPod is not merely one of the most successful products ever created, but a cultural, economic, and technological phenomenon that has rebooted the rules for the music industry, become a design statement, and must-have fashion accessory and has spawned a new medium of Podcasting. It has changed the way we listen to music and has turned listeners into programmers, and with its remarkable shuffle feature, it may even be changing the way we...

Relationships between the coupling constant and the binding energy of threshold bound states are obtained in a simple manner from an iterative algorithm for solving the eigenvalue problem. The absence of threshold bound states in higher dimensions can be easily understood.

In this paper, we study a matricial version of the Byrnes-Georgiou-Lindquist generalized moment problem with complexity constraint. We introduce a new metric on multivariable spectral densities induced by the family of their spectral factors which, in the scalar case, reduces to the Hellinger distance. We solve the corresponding constrained optimization problem via duality theory. A highly nontrivial existence theorem for the dual problem is established in the Byrnes-Lindquist spirit. A...

In analogy with a recursive formula for the HOMFLY-PT polynomial of links given by Jaeger, we give a recursive formula for the graph polynomial introduced by Kauffman and Vogel. We show how this formula extends to the Khovanov-Rozansky graph homology.

The chaotic sea below the lowest energy spanning curve of the complete Fermi-Ulam model (FUM) is numerically investigated when the amplitude of oscillation 'epsilon' of the moving wall is small. We use scaling analysis near the integrable to non-integrable transition to describe the average energy as function of time t and as function of iteration (or collision) number n. If t is employed as independent variable, the exponents related to the energy scaling properties of the FUM are different...

Parton recombination has been found to be an extremely useful model to understand hadron production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. It is particularly important to explore its connections with hard processes. This article reviews some of the aspects of the quark recombination model and places particular emphasis on hadron correlations.

We consider different types of external color sources that move through a strongly-coupled thermal N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma, and calculate, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, the dissipative force (or equivalently, the rate of energy loss) they experience. A bound state of k quarks in the totally antisymmetric representation is found to feel a force with a nontrivial k-dependence. Our result for k=1 (or k=N-1) agrees at large N with the one obtained recently by Herzog et al. and Gubser, but...

We present results about the star formation process in the giant HII region NGC 5471 in the outskirts of M101. From resolved HST/WPFC2 photometry we find that star formation has been going for the last 70 Myr. We further compare previous results from integrated infrared-optical photometry with the stellar resolved CMD and we discuss the star formation properties of this region and its individual knots, as well as characterizing the different stellar content. This result has very important...

We review the major achievements of the dynamical reduction program, showing why and how it provides a unified, consistent description of physical phenomena, from the microscopic quantum domain to the macroscopic classical one. We discuss the difficulties in generalizing the existing models in order to comprise also relativistic quantum field theories. We point out possible future lines of research, ranging from mathematical physics to phenomenology.

Perfect-fluid, static, cylindrically symmetric solutions of Einstein's field equations are obtained for the equations of state $\rho+3p=0$ and $\rho=p$. In the former case, the density and the pressure turn out to be constant while in the later case, they depend on the radial parameter $r$. Evan's solution corresponding to the equation of state $\rho=p$ is included in the solutions discussed here.

By assuming a particular mass function we find new exact solutions to the Einstein field equations with an anisotropic matter distribution. The solutions are shown to be relevant for the description of compact stars. A distinguishing feature of this class of solutions is that they admit a linear equation of state which can be applied to strange stars with quark matter.

The gene for the protective antigen of E. rhusiopathiae will be inserted into a eukaryotic vector both for the production of a DNA vaccine and for large scale production of the recombinant protein (in vitro). The DNA vaccine will be tested in cetacean cell lines for its ability to transfect the cells. The recombinant protein will be used to improve the existing ELISA for determining the antibody titers in cetacean serum samples to E. rhusiopathiae.

The conformal extensions of three kinds of special relativity with ISO(1,3)/SO(1,4)/SO(2,3) invariance on Mink/dS/AdS space, respectively, are realized on an SO(2,4)/Z_2 invariant projective null cone [N] as the (projective) boundary of the 5-d AdS-space. The relations among the conformal Mink/dS/AdS spaces, the motions of light signals and the conformal field theories on them can be given. Thus, there should be a triality for these conformal issues and the conjectured AdS/CFT correspondence.

We model three dSph galaxies, Draco, Ursa Minor and Fornax, as axisymmetric stellar systems embedded in spherical dark-matter potentials, which are in dynamical equilibrium without significant external tidal forces. We construct non-parametric two- and three-integral models that match the observed surface-density profiles and the current kinematic samples of $\sim150-200$ stars per galaxy; these models naturally produce the so-called ``extra-tidal extensions", which had previously been...

The E/SO sequence of a cluster defines a boundary redward of which a reliable weak lensing signal can be obtained from background galaxies, uncontaminated by cluster members. For bluer colors, both background and cluster members are present, reducing the distortion signal by the proportion of unlensed cluster members. In deep Subaru and HST/ACS images of A1689 the tangential distortion of galaxies with bluer colors falls rapidly toward the cluster center relative to the lensing signal of the...

We present a new method, fan-beam modulation, for observing weak extended x-ray sources with the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). This space-based solar x-ray and gamma-ray telescope has much greater sensitivity than previous experiments in the 3-25 keV range, but is normally not well suited to detecting extended sources since their signal is not modulated by RHESSI's rotating grids. When the spacecraft is offpointed from the target source, however, the fan-beam...
