Protoplanet eccentricities of e >~ H/r can slow or reverse migration, but previous 2D studies have shown that gravitational scattering cannot maintain significant planet eccentricities against disc-induced damping. We simulate the evolution of low-mass protoplanetary swarms in three dimensions. The aim is to examine both protoplanet survival rates and the dynamical structure of the resulting planetary systems, and to compare them with 2D simulations. We present results from a 3D hydrodynamic...

Using isospin relations, we predict the Standard-Model correlation between S_{pi^0 K_S}=(sin 2beta)_{pi^0 K_S} and A_{pi^0 K_S}, the mixing-induced and direct CP asymmetries of B^0-> pi^0 K_S. The calculation uses flavour SU(3) only to fix the isospin-3/2 amplitude through the B^\pm->pi^\pm pi^0 branching ratio, and thus has a small irreducible theoretical error. It can reach percent level precision thanks to expected future lattice-QCD progress for the calculation of the relevant...

We find the optimal investment strategy to minimize the expected time that an individual's wealth stays below zero, the so-called {\it occupation time}. The individual consumes at a constant rate and invests in a Black-Scholes financial market consisting of one riskless and one risky asset, with the risky asset's price process following a geometric Brownian motion. We also consider an extension of this problem by penalizing the occupation time for the degree to which wealth is negative.

It is well known that to determine a triangle up to congruence requires three measurements: three sides, two sides and the included angle, or one side and two angles. We consider various generalizations of this fact to two and three dimensions. In particular we consider the following question: given a convex polyhedron $P$, how many measurements are required to determine $P$ up to congruence? We show that in general the answer is that the number of measurements required is equal to the number...

We prove a version of the Chevalley Restriction Theorem for the action of a real reductive group G on a topological space X which locally embeds into a holomorphic representation. Assuming that there exists an appropriate quotient X//G for the G-action, we introduce a stratification which is defined with respect to orbit types of closed orbits. Our main result is a description of the quotient X//G in terms of quotients by normalizer subgroups associated to the stratification.

The dynamics of inertial particles in $2-d$ incompressible flows can be modeled by $4-d$ bailout embedding maps. The density of the inertial particles, relative to the density of the fluid, is a crucial parameter which controls the dynamical behaviour of the particles. We study here the dynamical behaviour of aerosols, i.e. particles heavier than the flow. An attractor widening and merging crisis is seen the phase space in the aerosol case. Crisis induced intermittency is seen in the time...

The (1+1)-dimensional kinetic model of crystal growth with simulated self-attraction and random sequential or parallel dynamics is introduced and studied via Monte-Carlo simulations. To imitate the attraction of absorbing atoms the probability of deposition is chosen to depend on the number of the nearest-neighbor atoms surrounding the deposited atom so it increases with this number. As well the evaporation probabilities are chosed to roughly account for this self-attraction. The model exhibits...

The equation studied is u"+((n-1)/r)u'+epsilon u u'+ku'^{2}=0, with boundary conditions u(1)=0, u(infinity)=1. This model equation has been studied by many authors since it was introduced in the 1950s by P. A. Lagerstrom. We use an elementary approach to show that there is an infinite series solution which is uniformly convergent on 1 = 0, and n >= 1.

The entanglement entropy of a subsystem of a quantum system is expressed, in the replica approach, through analytic continuation with respect to n of the trace of the n-th power of the reduced density matrix. This trace can be thought of as the vacuum expectation value of a suitable observable in a system made with n independent copies of the original system. We use this property to numerically evaluate it in some two-dimensional critical systems, where it can be compared with the results of...

We show that a conjecture by Lawson holds, that is, the inclusion from the Chow variety $C_{p,d}(P^n)$ of all effective algebraic p-cycles of degree d in n-dimensional projective space to the space of effective algebraic p-cycles is 2d-connected. As a result, the homotopy and homology groups of $C_{p,d}(P^n)$ are calculated up to 2d. We also show an analogous statement for Chow variety $C_{p,d}(\P^n)$ over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic and compute their etale homotopy...

A Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD) experiment has been performed to investigate the structural phase transition and magnetic order in CaFe1-xCoxAsF superconductor compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The parent compound CaFeAsF undergoes a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at 134(3) K, while the magnetic order in form of a spin-density wave (SDW) sets in at 114(3) K. The antiferromagnetic structure of the parent compound has been determined with a unique propagation vector k = (1,0,1) and...

A number of recent studies have estimated the inter-galactic void probability function and investigated its departure from various random models. We study a family of parametric statistical models based on gamma distributions, which do give realistic descriptions for other stochastic porous media. Gamma distributions contain as a special case the exponential distributions, which correspond to the `random' void size probability arising from Poisson processes. The random case corresponds to the...

The spectrum of a weighted Dirac comb on the Thue-Morse quasicrystal is investigated, and characterized up to a measure zero set, by means of the Bombieri-Taylor conjecture, for Bragg peaks, and of another conjecture that we call Aubry-Godr\`eche-Luck conjecture, for the singular continuous component. The decomposition of the Fourier transform of the weighted Dirac comb is obtained in terms of tempered distributions. We show that the asymptotic arithmetics of the $p$-rarefied sums of the...

We consider elastic single-particle scattering from a one-dimensional two-component trapped superfluid Fermi gas when the incoming projectile particle is identical to one of the confined species. Our theoretical treatment is based on the Hartree-Fock ground state of the trapped gas and a configuration-interaction description of the excitations. We determine the scattering phase shifts for the system and predict Fano-type scattering resonances that are a direct consequence of inter-atomic...

We present measurements of single-qubit gate errors for a superconducting qubit. Results from quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking are compared with gate errors obtained from a double pi pulse experiment. Randomized benchmarking reveals a minimum average gate error of 1.1+/-0.3% and a simple exponential dependence of fidelity on the number of gates. It shows that the limits on gate fidelity are primarily imposed by qubit decoherence, in agreement with theory.

We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a combined system which is composed of a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate and an optical cavity. The two sides couple dispersively. This system is characterized by its nonlinearity: after integrating out the freedom of the cavity mode, the potential felt by the condensate depends on the condensate itself. We develop a discrete-mode approximation for the condensate. Based on this approximation, we map out the steady configurations of the system. It...

A theoretical model is presented which explains the dominant decoherence process in a microcavity polariton condensate. The mechanism which is invoked is the effect of self-phase modulation, whereby interactions transform polariton number fluctuations into random energy variations. The model shows that the phase coherence decay, g1(t), has a Kubo form, which can be Gaussian or exponential, depending on whether the number fluctuations are slow or fast. This fluctuation rate also determines the...

We formulate a symmetry principle on the basis of the duality of electric and magnetic fields and apply it to dispersion forces. Within the context of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we rigorously establish duality invariance for the free electromagnetic field in the presence of causal magnetoelectrics. Dispersion forces are given in terms of the Green tensor for the electromagnetic field and the atomic response functions. After discussing the behavior of the Green tensor under a duality...
