We examine dark energy models in which a quintessence or a phantom field, $\phi$, rolls near the vicinity of a local minimum or maximum, respectively, of its potential $V(\phi)$. Under the approximation that $(1/V)(dV/d\phi) \ll 1$, [although $(1/V)(d^2 V/d\phi^2)$ can be large], we derive a general expression for the equation of state parameter $w$ as a function of the scale factor for these models. The dynamics of the field depends on the value of $(1/V)(d^2 V/d\phi^2)$ near the extremum,...

We investigate how entangled coherent states and superpositions of low intensity coherent states of non-Gaussian nature can be generated via non-resonant interaction between either two linearly or circularly polarized field modes and an ensemble of X-like four-level atoms placed in an optical cavity. We compare our results to recent experimental observations and argue that the non-Gaussian structure of the field states may be present in those systems.

The statistical properties of dark matter halos, the building blocks of cosmological observables associated with structure in the universe, offer many opportunities to test models for cosmic acceleration, especially those that seek to modify gravitational forces. We study the abundance, bias and profiles of halos in cosmological simulations for one such model: the modified action f(R) theory. In the large field regime that is accessible to current observations, enhanced gravitational forces...

We determine spectral curves for the known spiky string solutions in AdS space in the limit of large angular momentum. We also construct generic multi-spike solutions in this limit and compute the corresponding spectral data. The resulting spectral curves precisely match those of the classical spin chain describing the dual operators in one-loop gauge theory. Our results confirm the map between string theory and gauge theory degrees of freedom proposed in arXiv:0805.4387 [hep-th].

Recently Eisenstein and collaborators introduced a method to `reconstruct' the linear power spectrum from a non-linearly evolved galaxy distribution in order to improve precision in measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations. We reformulate this method within the Lagrangian picture of structure formation, to better understand what such a method does, and what the resulting power spectra are. We show that reconstruction does not reproduce the linear density field, at second order. We however...

The relativistic Landau levels in the layered organic material alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] are sensitive to the tilt of the Dirac cones, which, as in the case of graphene, determine the low-energy electronic properties under appropriate pressure. We show that an applied inplane electric field, which happens to be in competition with the tilt of the cones, lifts the twofold valley degeneracy due to a different level spacing. The scenario may be tested...

In this letter, we improve the results in [5] by relaxing the symmetry assumption and also taking the noise term into account. The author examines two discrete-time autonomous linear systems whose motivation comes from a neural network point of view in [5]. Here, we examine the following discrete-time autonomous linear system: ${\mathbf x}(k+1) = {\mathbf A} {\mathbf x}(k) + {\mathbf b}$ where ${\mathbf A}$ is any real square matrix with linearly independent eigenvectors whose largest...

The high kinetic energy outflowing in the jets of microquasars is delivered to the surrounding interstellar medium. This energy input can cause the formation of bow shocks and cocoons that may be detectable from radio to gamma-ray energies. Evidences or hints of emission from jet/medium interactions have been reported for some sources, but little has been done regarding the theoretical modeling of the resulting non-thermal emission. We have developed an analytical model based on those...

The effect of magnetic fields on the frequencies of toroidal oscillations of neutron stars is derived to lowest order. Interpreting the fine structure in the QPO power spectrum of magnetars following giant flares reported by Strohmayer and Watts (2006) to be "Zeeman splitting" of degenerate toroidal modes, we estimate a crustal magnetic field of order 10^{15} Gauss or more. We suggest that residual m, -m symmetry following such splitting might allow beating of individual frequency...

CONTEXT: In recent years, the solar chemical abundances have been studied in considerable detail because of discrepant values of solar metallicity inferred from different indicators, i.e., on the one hand, the "sub-solar" photospheric abundances resulting from spectroscopic chemical composition analyses with the aid of 3D hydrodynamical models of the solar atmosphere, and, on the other hand, the high metallicity inferred by helioseismology. AIMS: After investigating the solar oxygen...

We relate Fubini's theorem for Euler characteristics to Riemann-Hurwtiz formulae, and reprove a classical result of Iversen. The techniques used include algebraic geometry, complex geometry, and model theory. Possible applications to the study of wild ramification in finite characteristic are discussed.

We consider the excursions, i.e. the intervals between consecutive zeros, of stochastic processes that arise in a variety of nonequilibrium systems and study the temporal growth of the longest one l_{\max}(t) up to time t. For smooth processes, we find a universal linear growth < l_{\max}(t) > \simeq Q_{\infty} t with a model dependent amplitude Q_\infty. In contrast, for non-smooth processes with a persistence exponent \theta, we show that < l_{\max}(t) > has a linear growth if...

We show that a semi-classical polymerization of the interior of Schwarzschild black holes gives rise to a tantalizing candidate for a non-singular, single horizon black hole spacetime. The exterior has non-zero quantum stress energy but closely approximates the classical spacetime for macroscopic black holes. The interior exhibits a bounce at a microscopic scale and then expands indefinitely to a Kantowski-Sachs spacetime. Polymerization therefore removes the singularity and produces a scenario...

In this paper we give a criterion for a deformation of a hermitian vector bundle to be Ricci-flat. As an application we show that on a K\"ahler manifold, every deformation of a vector bundle can be made Ricci-flat whereas on some Hopf manifolds, the non-existence of a Ricci-flat deformation is related to non-trivial vector bundles on the universal cover ${\mathbb C}^n\setminus\{0\}$. On a surface with $b_1(X)\not=0$ filtrable Ricci-rigid vector bundles prove to be very special. We apply...
