If the Titanfall release had coincided with the start of March Madness, there probably wouldn't have been a podcast this week. As it is, we had to tear Richard away from his Xbox One to help Ben review the HD details that have been pouring in. There's a constant shuffle of content, ISP deals and updates to go through, as well as a certain monstrous LED-lit HD display to ogle. Your hosts leverage their experience and know-how to help speed you through the week's news, leaving some extra time to...

We present a theoretical and experimental study of photonic and electronic transport properties of a voltage biased InAs semiconductor double quantum dot (DQD) that is dipole-coupled to a superconducting transmission line resonator. We obtain the Master equation for the reduced density matrix of the coupled system of cavity photons and DQD electrons accounting systematically for both the presence of phonons and the effect of leads at finite voltage bias. We subsequently derive analytical...

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a wireless protocol well suited for ultra-low-power sensors running on small batteries. BLE is described as a new protocol in the official Bluetooth 4.0 specification. To design energy-efficient devices, the protocol provides a number of parameters that need to be optimized within an energy, latency and throughput design space. To minimize power consumption, the protocol parameters have to be optimized for a given application. Therefore, an energy-model that can...

We introduce matrix-valued weight functions of arbitrary size, which are analogues of the weight function for the Gegenbauer or ultraspherical polynomials for the parameter $\nu>0$. The LDU-decomposition of the weight is explicitly given in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials. We establish a matrix-valued Pearson equation for these matrix weights leading to explicit shift operators relating the weights for parameter $\nu$ and $\nu+1$. The matrix coefficients of the Pearson equation are obtained...

We investigate the large-time asymptotics of nonlinear diffusion equations $u_t = \Delta u^p$ in dimension $n \ge 1$, in the exponent interval $p > n/(n+2)$, when the initial datum $u_0$ is of bounded second moment. Precise rates of convergence to the Barenblatt profile in terms of the relative R\'enyi entropy are demonstrated for finite-mass solutions defined in the whole space when they are re-normalized at each time $t> 0$ with respect to their own second moment. The analysis shows...

In order to explore the driving mechanism of the concomitant metal-insulator and structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional hollandite K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$, electronic structures and phonon properties are investigated by employing the {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found that the imaginary phonon frequency reflecting the structural instability appears only in the DFT+$U$ ($U$: Coulomb correlation) calculation, which indicates that the Coulomb...

A naive realization of JSON data in R maps JSON arrays to an unnamed list, and JSON objects to a named list. However, in practice a list is an awkward, inefficient type to store and manipulate data. Most statistical applications work with (homogeneous) vectors, matrices or data frames. Therefore JSON packages in R typically define certain special cases of JSON structures which map to simpler R types. Currently there exist no formal guidelines, or even consensus between implementations on how R...

This paper presents three versions of maximum principle for a stochastic optimal control problem of Markov regime-switching forward-backward stochastic differential equations with jumps (FBSDEJs). A general sufficient maximum principle for optimal control for a system driven by a Markov regime-switching forward and backward jump-diffusion model is developed. After, an equivalent maximum principle is proved. Malliavin calculus is also employed to derive a general stochastic maximum principle....

A graph $G$ is list point $k$-arborable if, whenever we are given a $k$-list assignment $L(v)$ of colors for each vertex $v\in V(G)$, we can choose a color $c(v)\in L(v)$ for each vertex $v$ so that each color class induces an acyclic subgraph of $G$, and is equitable list point $k$-arborable if $G$ is list point $k$-arborable and each color appears on at most $\lceil |V(G)|/k\rceil$ vertices of $G$. In this paper, we conjecture that every graph $G$ is equitable list point $k$-arborable for...

A simple and general formalism for mode coupling by a spatial, temporal or spatiotemporal perturbation in dispersive materials is developed. This formalism can be used for studying various linear and non-linear optical interactions involving a dynamic modulation of the interaction parameters such as non-reciprocal phenomena, time reversal of signals and spatiotemporal quasi phase matching

We discuss the momentum redistribution along nearest and next nearest neighbour bond axes of Fe and Ni, using the Shannon entropy formula. We find that within the combined Density Functional and Dynamical Mean Field Theory weight redistribution takes place towards lower momenta as a function of the local Coulomb parameter U . This effect is more pronounced for Fe than Ni.

In this work, we extend the hybrid Chernoff tau-leap method to the multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) setting. Inspired by the work of Anderson and Higham on the tau-leap MLMC method with uniform time steps, we develop a novel algorithm that is able to couple two hybrid Chernoff tau-leap paths at different levels. Using dual-weighted residual expansion techniques, we also develop a new way to estimate the variance of the difference of two consecutive levels and the bias. This is crucial because the...

Exchange of orbital angular momentum between Laguerre-Gaussian beam of light and center-of-mass motion of an atom or molecule is well known. We show that orbital angular momentum of light can also be transferred to the internal electronic or rotational motion of an atom or a molecule provided the internal and center-of-mass motions are coupled. However, this transfer does not happen directly to the internal motion, but via center-of-mass motion. If atoms or molecules are cooled down to recoil...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common abnormal heart rhythm and the single biggest cause of stroke. Ablation, destroying regions of the atria, is applied largely empirically and can be curative but with a disappointing clinical success rate. We design a simple model of activation wavefront propagation on a structure mimicking the branching network architecture of heart muscle and show how AF emerges spontaneously as age-related parameters change. We identify regions responsible for the...

The tangent bundle $T^kM$ of order $k$, of a smooth Banach manifold $M$ consists of all equivalent classes of curves that agree up to their accelerations of order $k$. For a Banach manifold $M$ and a natural number $k$ first we determine a smooth manifold structure on $T^kM$ which also offers a fiber bundle structure for $(\pi_k,T^kM,M)$. Then we introduce a particular lift of linear connections on $M$ to geometrize $T^kM$ as a vector bundle over $M$. More precisely based on this lifted...

The bulk band structure of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ has been determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and compared to first-principles calculations. We have performed calculations using the local density approximation (LDA) of density functional theory and the one-shot $GW$ approximation within the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FLAPW) formalism, fully taking into account spin-orbit coupling. Quasiparticle effects produce significant changes in the band...

The differentially heated rotating annulus is a widely studied tabletop-size laboratory model of the general mid-latitude atmospheric circulation. The two most relevant factors of cyclogenesis, namely rotation and meridional temperature gradient are quite well captured in this simple arrangement. The radial temperature difference in the cylindrical tank and its rotation rate can be set so that the isothermal surfaces in the bulk tilt, leading to the formation of baroclinic waves. The signatures...

In this paper, we introduce semiopen and semiclosed fuzzy soft sets in fuzzy soft topological spaces. Various properties of these sets are studied alongwith some characterizations. Further, we generalize the structures like interior and closure via semiopen and semiclosed fuzzy soft sets and study their various properties.

Coherent causal memory (CCM) is causal memory in which prefixes of an execution can be mapped to global memory states in a consistent way. While CCM requires conflicting pairs of writes to be globally ordered, it allows writes to remain unordered with respect to both reads and nonconflicting writes. Nevertheless, it supports assertional, state-based program reasoning using generalized Owicki-Gries proof outlines (where assertions can be attached to any causal program edge). Indeed, we show that...

Pluri-Lagrangian systems are variational systems with the multi-dimensional consistency property. This notion has its roots in the theory of pluriharmonic functions, in the Z-invariant models of statistical mechanics, in the theory of variational symmetries going back to Noether and in the theory of discrete integrable systems. A $d$-dimensional pluri-Lagrangian problem can be described as follows: given a $d$-form $L$ on an $m$-dimensional space, $m > d$, whose coefficients depend on a...

This article is from Journal of Cell Science , volume 127 . Abstract Crosstalk between the microtubule (MT) and actin cytoskeletons is fundamental to many cellular processes including cell polarisation and cell motility. Previous work has shown that members of the growth-arrest-specific 2 (GAS2) family mediate the crosstalk between filamentous actin (F-actin) and MTs, but the molecular basis of this process remained unclear. By using fluorescence microscopy, we demonstrate that three members of...
